Training

•Readtheinstructionscarefully.Befamiliarwiththe

controlsandtheproperuseoftheequipment.

•Neverallowchildrenorpeopleunfamiliarwith

theseinstructionstousethelawnmower.Local

regulationscanrestricttheageoftheoperator.

•Nevermowwhilepeople,especiallychildren,orpets

arenearby.

•Keepinmindthattheoperatororuserisresponsible

foraccidentsorhazardsoccurringtootherpeopleor

theirproperty.

•Donotcarrypassengers.

•Alldriversshouldseekandobtainprofessional

andpracticalinstruction.Suchinstructionshould

emphasize:

–theneedforcareandconcentrationwhen

workingwithride-onmachines;

–controlofaride-onmachineslidingonaslope

willnotberegainedbytheapplicationofthe

brake.Themainreasonsforlossofcontrolare:

Preparation

•Whilemowing,alwayswearsubstantialfootwearand

longtrousers.Donotoperatetheequipmentwhen

barefootorwearingopensandals.

•Thoroughlyinspecttheareawheretheequipment

istobeusedandremoveallobjectswhichmaybe

thrownbythemachine.

•Warning—Fuelishighlyammable.

–Storefuelincontainersspecicallydesignedfor

thispurpose.

–Refueloutdoorsonlyanddonotsmokewhile

refuelling.

–Addfuelbeforestartingtheengine.Never

removethecapofthefueltankoraddfuelwhile

theengineisrunningorwhentheengineishot.

–Iffuelisspilled,donotattempttostartthe

enginebutmovethemachineawayfromthe

areaofspillageandavoidcreatinganysourceof

ignitionuntilfuelvaporshavedissipated.

–Replaceallfueltanksandcontainercapssecurely.

•Replacefaultysilencers.

•Beforeusing,alwaysvisuallyinspecttoseethatthe

blades,bladeboltsandcutterassemblyarenotworn

ordamaged.Replacewornordamagedbladesand

boltsinsetstopreservebalance.

•Onmulti-bladedmachines,takecareasrotatingone

bladecancauseotherbladestorotate.

Operation

•Donotoperatetheengineinaconnedspacewhere

dangerouscarbonmonoxidefumescancollect.

•Mowonlyindaylightoringoodarticiallight.

•Beforeattemptingtostarttheengine,disengageall

bladeattachmentclutchesandshiftintoneutral.

•Donotuseonslopesofmorethan

–5°whenmowingonsidehills;

–10°whenmowinguphill;

–15°whenmowingdownhill.

•Rememberthereisnosuchthingasasafeslope.

Travelongrassslopesrequiresparticularcare.To

guardagainstoverturning:

–donotstoporstartsuddenlywhengoingupor

downhill;

–engageclutchslowly,alwayskeepmachinein

gear,especiallywhentravellingdownhill;

–machinespeedsshouldbekeptlowonslopes

andduringtightturns;

–stayalertforhumpsandhollowsandother

hiddenhazards;

–nevermowacrossthefaceoftheslope,unless

thelawnmowerisdesignedforthispurpose.

•Usecarewhenpullingloadsorusingheavy

equipment.

–Useonlyapproveddrawbarhitchpoints.

–Limitloadstothoseyoucansafelycontrol.

–Donotturnsharply.Usecarewhenreversing.

–Usecounterweight(s)orwheelweightswhen

suggestedintheinstructionhandbook.

•Watchoutfortrafcwhencrossingornearroadways.

•Stopthebladesrotatingbeforecrossingsurfaces

otherthangrass.

•Whenusinganyattachments,neverdirectdischarge

ofmaterialtowardbystandersnorallowanyonenear

themachinewhileinoperation.

•Neveroperatethemachinewithdamagedguardsor

withoutsafetyprotectivedevicesinplace.

•Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsor

overspeedtheengine.Operatingtheengineat

excessivespeedcanincreasethehazardofpersonal

injury.

•Beforeleavingtheoperator’sposition:

–disengagethepowertake-offandlowerthe

attachments;

–changeintoneutralandsettheparkingbrake;

–stoptheengineandremovethekey.

•Disengagedrivetoattachments,stoptheengine,

anddisconnectthesparkplugwire(s)orremovethe

ignitionkey

–beforeclearingblockagesoruncloggingchute;

–beforechecking,cleaningorworkingonthelawn

mower;

–afterstrikingaforeignobject.Inspectthelawn

mowerfordamageandmakerepairsbefore

restartingandoperatingtheequipment;

–ifthemachinestartstovibrateabnormally(check

immediately).

•Disengagedrivetoattachmentswhentransporting

ornotinuse.

•Stoptheengineanddisengagedrivetoattachment

–beforerefuelling;

–beforeremovingthegrasscatcher;

–beforemakingheightadjustmentunless

adjustmentcanbemadefromtheoperator’s

position.

•Reducethethrottlesettingduringenginerun-out

and,iftheengineisprovidedwithashut-offvalve,

turnthefueloffattheconclusionofmowing.

MaintenanceandStorage

•Keepallnuts,boltsandscrewstighttobesurethe

equipmentisinsafeworkingcondition.

•Neverstoretheequipmentwithfuelinthetank

insideabuildingwherefumescanreachanopen

ameorspark.

•Allowtheenginetocoolbeforestoringinany

enclosure.

•Toreducetherehazard,keeptheengine,silencer,

batterycompartmentandfuelstorageareafreeof

grass,leaves,orexcessivegrease.

•Checkthegrasscatcherfrequentlyforwearor

deterioration.

•Replacewornordamagedpartsforsafety.

•Ifthefueltankhastobedrained,thisshouldbe

doneoutdoors.

fueltankbedrained.

•Cleanstheenginewhileitruns

•Eliminatesgum-likevarnishbuildupinthefuel

system,whichcauseshardstarting

Important:Donotusefueladditivescontaining

methanolorethanol.

Addthecorrectamountofgasstabilizer/conditioner

tothegas.

Note:Afuelstabilizer/conditionerismosteffective

whenmixedwithfreshgasoline.Tominimizethe

chanceofvarnishdepositsinthefuelsystem,usefuel

stabilizeratalltimes.

FillingtheFuelTank

1.Shuttheengineoffandsettheparkingbrake.

2.Cleanaroundeachfueltankcapandremovethecap.

3.Addunleadedregulargasolinetobothfueltanks,

untilthelevelis1/4to1/2inch(6mmto13mm)

belowthebottomofthellerneck.

Thisspaceinthetankallowsgasolinetoexpand.

Donotllthefueltankscompletelyfull.

4.Installfueltankcapssecurely.

5.Wipeupanygasolinethatmayhavespilled.

CheckingtheEngineOilLevel

Beforeyoustarttheengineandusethetractor,check

UnderstandingtheSafetyInterlock

System

Thesafetyinterlocksystemisdesignedtopreventthe

enginefromstartingunless:

•Theclutch/brakepedalisdepressed.

•Thebladecontrol(PTO)leverisintheDisengage

position.

Thesafetyinterlocksystemstopstheengineifyourise

fromtheseatwhenyoureleasetheclutch/brakepedal

orengagetheblade.

TestingtheSafetyInterlock

System

Ifthesafetyinterlockswitchesaredisconnected

ordamaged,thetractorcouldoperate

unexpectedly,causingpersonalinjury.

•Donottamperwiththeinterlockswitches.

•Checktheoperationoftheinterlock

switchesdailyandreplaceanydamaged

switchesbeforeoperatingthetractor.

Testthesafetyinterlocksystembeforeyouusethe

tractoreachtime.Ifthesafetyinterlocksystemdoesnot

operateasdescribedbelow,haveanAuthorizedService

Dealerrepairthesafetyinterlocksystemimmediately.

Whilesittingintheseat,performthefollowingchecks:

1.ShiftthegroundspeedleverintoNeutral,setthe

parkingbrake,shiftthebladecontrol(PTO)lever

toEngage,andturntheignitionkeytoStart:The

engineshouldnotcrank.

2.WiththegroundspeedleverinNeutral,shift

thebladecontrol(PTO)levertotheDisengage

position,releasetheparkingbrake,andturnthe

ignitionkeytoStart:Theengineshouldnotcrank.

3.WiththegroundspeedleverinNeutral,setthe

parkingbrake,shiftthebladecontrol(PTO)leverto

Disengage,andstarttheengine.Whiletheengineis

running,releasetheparkingbrakeandriseslightly

fromtheseat:Theengineshouldstop.

4.Shiftthebladecontrol(PTO)leverintothe

Disengageposition,shiftthegroundspeedleverin

Neutral,settheparkingbrake,andstarttheengine.

Whiletheengineisrunning,shiftthebladecontrol

(PTO)leverintotheEngageposition,pushinthe

clutch,andshiftthegroundspeedleverinReverse:

Theengineshouldstop.

5.Shiftthebladecontrol(PTO)leverintothe

Disengageposition,shiftthegroundspeedleverin

Neutral,andsettheparkingbrake.Starttheengine,

shiftthebladecontrol(PTO)leverintotheEngage

position,andturntheKeyChoicekeyandrelease

illuminate.

6.Shiftthebladecontrol(PTO)levertotheDisengage

DrivingtheTractorForwardor

Backward

Thethrottlecontrolregulatestheenginespeedas

measuredinRPM(revolutionsperminute).

Togoforwardorbackward:

1.Depresstheclutch/brakepedal.

2.Shiftthegroundspeedlevertothedesiredforward

speedortoReverse.

Note:Asyouslowlyreleasethepedal,thetractor

willbegintomove.

3.Steerthetractorwiththesteeringwheel.

Note:Tooperatethetractorinreversewiththe

blade(PTO)engaged,youmustdeactivatethe

operating-in-reverseinterlockusingtheKeyChoice

switchlocatedinfrontofandbelowtheseat.

Suddenlyreleasingtheclutchpedalcouldcause

youtolosecontrolandsuddenlyputthetractor

inmotion.

Alwaysreleasetheclutchpedalslowlywhen

startingthetractorinmotion.

SelectingtheGroundSpeed

Important:Toavoidtransmissiondamage,always

depresstheclutch/brakepedalbeforeshiftinginto

oroutofReverse.

Alwaysstartthetractorinmotionbydepressingthe

clutch/brakepedalandshiftingintothedesiredspeed.

Oncethetractorisinmotion,youcanshiftintoany

forwardspeedwithoutdepressingtheclutch/brake

pedal.Inmostconditions,thetractorispowerful

enoughtomoveoutinanyspeed.Ifitwillnotmove

outinahigherspeedbecauseofaheavyload,shiftto

alowerspeed.

Important:Donotshiftonslopes.Chooseaslow

speedsothatyouwillnothavetostoporshift

whileontheslope.

StoppingtheTractor

1.Depresstheclutch/brakepedal.

2.ShiftthegroundspeedleverintoNeutral.

3.Disengagetheblade(PTO).

4.TurntheignitionkeytoOff.

5.Settheparkingbrakeifyouleavethetractor

unattended;refertoSettingtheParkingBrake.

Note:Removethekeysfromtheignitionand

KeyChoiceswitches.

Childrenorbystandersmaybeinjuredifthey

moveorattempttooperatethetractorwhileit

isunattended.

AlwaysremovetheignitionandKeyChoice

keysandsettheparkingbrakewhenleaving

thetractorunattended,evenifjustforafew

minutes.

Important:Topreventexcessivewear,donot

“ridethebrakes.”Shiftthegroundspeedlever

toalowerspeedsothatyouwillnothaveto

stoporshiftwhileyouareontheslope.

SideDischargingorMulching

theGrass

Withoutthegrassdeector,dischargecover,

orcompletegrasscatcherassemblymounted

inplace,youandothersareexposedtoblade

contactandthrowndebris.Contactwitha

rotatingmowerbladeandthrowndebriswill

causeinjuryordeath.

•Neverremovethegrassdeectorfrom

themowerbecausethegrassdeector

routesmaterialdowntowardtheturf.Ifthe

grassdeectoriseverdamaged,replaceit

immediately.

•Neverputyourhandsorfeetunderthe

mower.

•Nevertrytocleardischargeareaormower

bladesunlessyoudisengagetheblade

(PTO)androtatetheignitionkeytoOff.

Also,removethekeyanddisconnectthe

wirefromthesparkplug.

Themowerhasahingedgrassdeectorthatdisperses

clippingstothesideanddowntowardtheturf.

Tomulchthegrassclippings,youmustinstallthe

dischargecoverintotheopeninginthesideofthe

mower;refertoInstallingtheDischargeCover.

InstallingtheDischargeCover

Toconvertfromasidedischargetoamulchingmower,

installthedischargecoverintotheopeningattheside

ofthemower.

1.Stoptheengineandwaitforallmovingpartsto

stop.

2.Removetheignitionkey.

3.Liftthegrassdeectorandplacethedischarge

coverovertheopeningontothelowerlipofthe

mowerandslideitintothefronthinge(Figure17).

OperatingTips

•Forthebestperformance,operatetheengineat

themaximumspeed.Themowerrequiresairto

thoroughlycutgrassclippings,sodonotsetthe

height-of-cuttooloworcompletelysurroundthe

mowerinuncutgrass.Alwaysleaveonesideofthe

mowerfreefromuncutgrasstoallowtheairtobe

drawnintothemower.

•Cutthegrassslightlylongerthannormaltoensure

thatthecuttingheightofthemowerdoesnotscalp

anyunevenground.Whencuttinggrasslongerthan

6inch(15cm)tall,cutthelawntwicetoensurean

acceptableappearance.

•Itisbesttocutonlyabout1/3ofthegrassblade.

Donotcutmorethanthatunlessthegrassissparse

oritislatefallwhengrassgrowsmoreslowly.

•Alternatethemowingdirectiontokeepthegrass

standingstraight.Thisalsohelpsdisperseclippings

andenhancesdecompositionandfertilization.

•Grassgrowsatdifferentratesatdifferenttimesof

theseason.Tomaintainthesamecuttingheight,

whichisagoodpractice,mowmoreofteninearly

spring.Asthegrassgrowthrateslowsinmid

summer,mowlessfrequently.

•Ifthegrassislongerthannormal,orifitcontains

ahighdegreeofmoisture,raisethecuttingheight

higherthanusual,cutthegrassatthatsetting,and

thencutthegrassagainatthelower,normalsetting.

•Ifyoumuststopthetractorwhilemowing,youmay

leaveaclumpofgrassclippingsonyourlawn.To

avoidthis,dothefollowing:

–Engagethebladeandmovetoapreviouslycut

area.

–Dispersetheclippingsevenlybyraisingthe

mower1or2height-of-cutsettingswhiledriving

forwardwiththebladeengaged.

•Usethewashoutporttocleanclippingsanddirt

fromtheundersideofthemoweraftereachuse.If

grassanddirtbuildupinsidethemower,thecutting

qualitywilleventuallybecomeunsatisfactory.

•Maintainasharpbladethroughouttheseason.A

sharpbladecutsgrasscleanlywithouttearingor

shreddingthegrassblades.Tearingandshredding

thegrassturnsitbrownattheedges,whichslows

itsgrowthandincreasesthechanceofdisease.

Every30days,checkthebladeforsharpnessand

ledownanynicks.
