Installation Guide
for Windows with
Mounting Flanges
These guidelines outline how to use 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape 8067 to flash
a flanged window installed in a wall assembly consisting of housewrap over an
exterior sheathing on a wood frame wall.
The following installation information is intended to represent a “best practices”
approach and is not intended to address all possible construction scenarios or all
window manufacturers’ installation instructions. Some of the information described
below is similar to that described in ASTM E 2112, Method A1.
Follow the window manufacturer’s instructions as installation methods may be
a requirement of the window manufacturer’s warranty.
Install the weather
resistive barrier
1. Install the weather resistive barrier (WRB) per the manufacturers instruction in
an over-lapping water shedding fashion over the entire wall. Make a modified “I”
cut through the building wrap as shown in Fig. 1A.

the WRB
2. Fold and fasten the WRB: Fold the header flap up above the window exposing
the sheathing and temporarily tape in place. Fold the side flaps of the WRB into the
opening and staple to inside wall. Fold the bottom flap in and trim the WRB on the
sill to allow the flashing tape to adhere to the wood as shown in Fig. 2A.

Apply sill
flashing tape
3. Apply sill flashing tape:
NOTE: There are other methods for flashing the sill that require additional materials
which are not included in this guide. However, it is good practice to create a slope on the
sill that directs water down to the outside of the building. In this case, a sloped sill may
be installed directly over the WRB before applying the sill flashing tape.
Follow this procedure when applying 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape 8067:
Peel back a few inches of one side of the split paper release liner to position the tape.
Remove the liner while applying firm pressure to the flashing tape surface as it comes
into contact with the building surface. Repeat this procedure with the remaining side of
the paper release liner and tape. Using a roller (rubber, wood or steel “J” roller) apply
sufficient pressure along the entire tape surface to ensure a continuous seal and to
eliminate trapping air beneath the tape.
A. Cut a piece of 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape 8067 a length equivalent to the width
of the rough opening plus 2 times the width of the flashing tape. Position and apply
the flashing tape on the face of the wall so that the top edge of the flashing tape
extends one inch above the top edge of the sill rough opening as shown in Fig. 3A1
and 3A2 as 1
st
sill flashing tape.

tape is one inch above the

opening. See Figure 3A2

3A1. 1

the width of the rough
opening plus 2x the width of
the flashing tape. The tape
extends beyond the rough
opening approximately 1x the
width of the flashing tape on
each side.

B. Cut another piece of 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape 8067 12" longer than the
opening width. This is in order for the tape to extend 6" up each side of the
opening. Apply the flashing tape to the inside of the sill as shown in Fig. 3B, so it
overhangs 1" into the exterior wall and over the WRB and tape applied in step 1.
Cut the 1" overhang at each corner, as shown in Fig 3B. Fold tape to the exterior
over the WRB or tape and press firmly to obtain good contact and adhesion. This
is the 2
nd
sill flashing tape.
C. Cut another piece of 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape 8067 12" longer than the
opening width. Apply the tape to the inside of the sill overlapping the 2
nd
sill tape
by at least 1" as shown in Fig. 3C. The tape should NOT extend beyond the
interior face of the framing, and does not need to extend all the way to the interior
of the window opening. This is the 3
rd
sill flashing tape.

Install the
window
4. Install the window, plumb, level and square, in accordance with the window
manufacturers instructions. Typically, this requires that a bead of sealant be applied to
the back side of the window flange prior to installing the window.
Note: Do not seal the bottom flange of the window. Attach the window using fasteners
specified by the window manufacturer and spaced as directed.
Install the jamb
flashing tape
5. Install the jamb flashing tape: Cut two pieces of 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape
8067 a length equivalent to the length of the frame height of the window plus 2 times
the width of the flashing tape. The flashing tape should extend beyond both the top and
bottom of the window frame by a length equal to the width of the tape. Be sure that the
jamb flashing tape overlaps the sill flashing tape. Apply one piece of flashing tape to
each side of the window over the nailing fin and onto the WRB as shown in Fig. 5.

The flashing tape should extend
beyond both the tape and bottom of
the window by a length equivalent
to the width of the tape and
overlaps the sill flashing tape.

Install the header
flashing tape
6. Install the header flashing tape: Cut a piece of 3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape
8067 a length equivalent to the frame width of the window plus 2 times the width of
the flashing tape plus 2 inches. The header flashing tape should overlap and extend
beyond the jamb flashing tapes by at least 1 inch on each side as shown in Fig. 6.
Apply the flashing tape to the top of the window over the nailing fin and directly onto
the sheathing.
Fold down
the header
flap of WRB
7. Fold down the header flap of WRB: Fold down the WRB header flap so that it
overlaps the header flashing tape as shown in Fig. 7. Trim the WRB header flap so that
it does not touch the top of the window frame. Tape the diagonal cuts in the WRB with
3M™ All Weather Flashing Tape 8067.
The flashing tape should overlap and extend
beyond the jamb flashing by at least 1".
Cut the flashing tape the frame width
of the window plus 2 times the width
of the flashing tape plus 2 inches.
Apply the flashing tape to the top of
the window over the nailing fin and
directly onto the sheathing.
