4 Line (400) Module and 8 Line (800) Module
These modules (Figure 1) allow you to connect outside lines to your
MERLIN® II Communications System. The 4 Line (400) Module has
four outside line jacks and one power failure transfer jack. This module
is also equipped with Touch-Tone® receiver capability which supports
Direct Inward System access (DISA). The 8 Line (800) Module has eight
outside line jacks and two power failure transfer jacks.
Refer to your Merlin II Communications System Installation Guide for
further information.

PFTT (Power Failure Transfer Telephone) jack
Connect a basic telephone only. Do not use a MERLIN II system voice
terminal. Each group of four outside line jacks has one PFTT jack that
is connected to the lowest numbered line in the group. Your MERLIN II
system switches telephone service to this PFTT jack during power
outages.
Outside line jacks
Connect outside telephone company lines and Music-On-Hold and
loudspeaker paging equipment to these jacks. If your system has Music-
On-Hold, refer to CIB 3106 for Music-On-Hold Adapter installation instruc-
tions. Refer to the “Reference Section” in your MERLIN II System Manual
for Music-On-Hold and Loudspeaker Page administration procedures.

Inserting and Removing Modules
WARNING:
Before inserting or removing modules, be sure to
turn Off the power switch on the Power Module(s). If your
system has an expansion carrier, turn Off the power switch on
the basic carrier’s Power Module first, then turn Off the power
switch on the expansion carrier’s Power Module.

If the top and front covers are on the carrier(s) remove them using
the instructions below; otherwise, skip to Step 2.

Open the front cover by grasping it at the bottom and pulling it
away from the carrier (Figure 2A). Then remove the cover by lift-
ing it off the carrier.

Remove the top cover (Figure 2B) by lifting it off the carrier.

Remove the cardboard protector from the connector at the back of
the module.
Make sure that the power switch is Off on the Power Module(s). Fol-
low the procedure below for turning the power off at the Power
Module(s):

If your system has an expansion carrier, first turn Off the power
switch on the basic carrier’s Power Module. Then turn Off the
power switch on the expansion carrier’s Power Module.
If your system only has a basic carrier, turn Off the power switch
on its Power Module.

Insert the module into the leftmost empty slot using the instructions in
Figure 3A and the following guidelines. Make sure that empty slots
are not left between modules because modules to the right of an
empty slot will not function.

The leftmost slot in both the basic carrier and expansion carrier
are for Power Modules.
Slot 0
in the basic carrier is for the Processor Module.
Slot 1 in the basic carrier must contain either a 408 (analog) or
an 008 (analog) Module.
All other slots
can contain any of the available circuit modules.

Label modules following the instructions in the section below titled
“Labeling Jacks on Modules.”
If the rightmost slot in the carrier does not contain a module, insert
the empty module (provided with the basic carrier assembly) in this
slot to support the top cover.
Follow the procedure below for turning the power on at the Power
Module(s).
CAUTION: The modules in these slots are interchangeable during
installation only. Once your system’s power is turned on,
modules that are removed must be replaced with the same type
of module. Removing a module and replacing it with a different
type of module may require readministration of your entire sys-
tem.
If your system has an expansion carrier, first turn On the power
switch on its Power Module. Then turn On the power switch on
the basic carrier’s Power Module.
If your system only has a basic carrier, turn On the power switch
on its Power Module.

Replace the front and top covers.
REMOVING MODULES
Remove modules by following the instructions in Figure 3B and Steps 1,
3, 7, and 8 above.
Labeling Jacks on Modules
After installing modules, affix a jack label to the right of each jack using
the numbering strips (provided with each module) (Figure 4).
