Concrete
Crack & Joint Filler
Congratulations, you have purchased PLI•STIX
, a product that will
permanently seal your concrete or blacktop pavement cracks. It is
critica l to repair these cracks…for safety reasons, to maintain the
pavements appearance, to prevent major repairs or complete resur-
facing and to protect your pavement investment.
Look over the entire sidewalk, driveway and walkway for cracks and joints, identify and
estimate the size and length of PLI•STIX
needed for the repairs.
Size it… IMPORTANT: The sealant is designed to be applied 1/16” to 1/8”
below the pavement surface.
PLI•STIX
is designed to fill the crack hot. When heated/liquefied, it bonds to the
sides and walls of the crack or joint providing a 100% watertight seal. PLI•STIX
does not fill from the bottom-up, rather “seal” at the surface (recessed approximately
1/8” below the pavement).
PLI•STIX
provide a flexible bond that expands and contracts as the pavement tem-
perature changes.
Sweep and clean the entire crack/joint and surface of repair. All cracks/joints and sur-
faces must be dry and clean for PLI•STIX
to properly adhere/bond. Monitor weather
reports and avoid mist or rain when applying. Read and follow all See Manufacturer
of Propane Torch’s instructions).Wear a long sleeve shirt, long pants, proper footwear,
gloves, protective head and eye wear.
The following tools are required to apply PLI•STIX
crack & joint filler: a screwdriver
or sharp instrument to clean, dig-out the crack/joint, a whisk broom or brush to sweep
out the crack/joint, and a propane torch to melt the PLI•STIX
.
Clean it: Sweep the entire length of pavement where cracks or joints are to be re-
paired. Using a screwdriver or any sharp tool, dig out and remove all dirt, sand, plants,
grass/roots from the inside of the crack or joint. Then sweep, using a back and forth
motion, removing all debris from the length of the crack or joint…it must be clean
and dry!
Size it: PLI•STIX
are designed to fit the many sizes and shapes of pavement
cracks and joints. MEDIUM PLI•STIX
fills medium to large cracks 1/2” 1” diam-
eter (1/4 if spliced or stretched out when product is warm…or doubling over the
PLI•STIX
for cracks or joints larger than 1” ).
To STRETCH: Allow product to soften in the sun or a warm place for 20 minutes.
Uncoil and firmly hold with one hand the cut end of the PLI•STIX
.With the other hand
pull and stretch using a gentle “tugging” motion of 8” to 10” of PLI•STIX
at a time.
NOTE: if the STIX accidentally breaks, use the broken piece along with other pieces of
PLI•STIX
to fill the crack. Once the PLI•STIX
is the width and length desired, cut
and pack the cut STIX into the crack or joint and heat.
Pack it: Starting at one end, take the PLI•STIX
and driver or any blunt instrument
to push down into the crack inch by inch, filling approximately 1/8” from the top of the
surrounding pavement. This slight recess will allow for expansion and contraction.
Melt-it: NOTICE! For concrete pavement repairs, follow these instructons: Prot-
land cement (“concrete”) can contain trapped moisture, which can cause “pop-
ping or spalling” when heated. To minimize this condition, dry concrete prior to
aplying PLI•STIX
, Pre-warm the concrete surface by moving the torch flame
back and forth approximately 12” from the surface, until concrete is completely
dry (about 3-40 seconds).
Melt-it: Once the PLI•STIX
are packed in the crack or joint, light the
propane torch, adjust the flame until the total flame is 3-4” long and the
blue tip is approximately 1” long. Follow manufacturer’s instructions when
using torch. Hold the flame at a 45 degree angle 3” from the PLI•STIX
and begin heating by moving the flame back and forth, in a slow, even
motion (DO NOT HOLD FLAME IN ONE PLACE OVER PLI•STIX
MOVING
BACK AND FORTH). Heat approximately 1’ (one foot) at a time. The “melt-
away” plastic wrapper will burn off. PLI•STIX
will start to immediately
liquefy. (there may be a slight flame for a few seconds), PLI•STIX
will
become blacker in color and start to immediately liquefy. Continue heat-
ing for approximately 1-2 minutes (the type and size torch, along with
wind and temperature conditions, will effect melting time). If not com-
pletely melted, PLI•STIX
can be reheated to complete seal at anytime.
Move on to other cracks or joints until job is completed. PLI•STIX
is
traffic-ready in approximately 20 minutes.
STORAGE RECOMMENDATION: PLI•STIX
have an excellent
shelf life…keep in a dry cool place, between 35-70 degrees.
NOTE: For concrete pavement repairs, follow these special instructions:
Portland cement can contain trapped moisture, which can cause "pop-
ping or spalling" when heated. To minimize this condition, dry concrete
prior to applying PLI•STIX
. Pre-warm the concrete surface by moving
the torch flame back and forth approximately 12" from the surface, until
concrete is completely dry (about 30-40 seconds).
Do NOT overheat concrete or asphalt pavement adjacent to crack or joint
to be repaired. Excessive heat can cause discoloring and may break down
pavement composition. It is best to heat for a short period of time per in-
structions to prevent excessive heating to adjacent surfaces.
NOTE: PLI•STIX
can be reliquefied at any future time if necessary. To
rebond or reseal the sealant to the sidewalls follow the original PLI•STIX
instructions.
CAUTION: Liquefied crack filler is extremely HOT and will burn…DO NOT
TOUCH until completely cooled, 10-15 minutes. While it is cooling, you
can continue with your repairs to other cracks/joints. Once filling/sealing
and cooling are completed, check your work. If you did not apply enough
sealant, or used the wrong size, correct by adding more
PLI•STIX
.
KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN
