UNPACKING
After removaloftheshippingcarton,openthedoor and take out all loose parts except the
polystyrenepackersabovethetopbaffle.DoNOTdiscardthetopbaffle.Youmayfinditmore
convenienttoliftthedoorfromitshingesatthisstage.
Removeanddiscardthefourboltsholdingthewoodfiretotheshippingpallet.
Removethewoodfirefromthepallet,liftingonlyfromtheloweredgeofeachside.
DONOTLIFTBYTHELOWERFRONTPANELORTHEREARPANEL.
ASSEMBLYOFFREE-STANDINGMODELS
Thetableinsidethefrontcoverwillhelpyouidentifythevariousfastenings.
Firstassemblethepedestal.Securethetwopedestalsidestothefront,usingfourM6x12set
screwsandtakingcarethatthebottomflangesofthesidepanelsalignwiththebottomflangeof
thefrontpanel.Thetopflangeofthefrontpanelwillbeabovethetopflangesofthesides.Fit
the slotted pedestal rear panel using the four black 12mm long self threading screws (sharp
points).Ifyourwoodfirewillhaveafan,thiswillbefittedLATERinplaceofthepedestalrear
panel.Usingthefourzincplated12mmlongselfthreadingscrews(bluntpoints),screwthe
bottomheatshieldtothetopofthepedestalassemblywiththeturnedupendsoftheheatshield
facingawayfromthepedestal.Checkthatthepedestalsurround(foot)andtrim(ifany)willfit
snuglyaroundtheassembledpedestalbeforetighteningallassemblyscrewsfully.
Rollthewoodfirecarefullyontoitsback,usingtheflattenedcartontoprotectthefloor.
Takingcarethattheslottedpedestalrearpanelwillbeattherear,attachthepedestaltothe
fireboxusingthefourM6x35setscrews,fourM6flatwashersandfourM6Hexagonnuts.
Placethewashersonthesetscrewsandpassthescrewsfrominsidethefireboxthroughthe
holesinthepedestal.Thenutswillbeinsidethepedestal.Checkthealignmentofthepedestal
beforetighteningthenutsfirmly.
Rollyourwoodfirecarefullybackintotheuprightposition.
Ifyou areinstallinga fan,thiscannow be fitted at the rear of the pedestal in place of the
pedestalrearpanel.

POSITIONINGYOURFREE-STANDINGWOODFIRE
Free-standingwoodfiresmustnotbeinstalledinafireplaceoralcove,orunderaceilingofless
than normal height. No wall or other immovable object may be closer to the front of the
woodfirethanonemetre.
Ifawaterheatingaccessoryistobefitted,afurtherpositioningrestraintistheneedtobeclose
toyourhotwaterstoragecylinder(Seepage10).
Finalisetheinstallationpositionforyourwoodfireonlyafterconsideringthenecessarystoveto
heatsensitivewalldistances(SeeTablesbelow)andcheckingthepracticabilityofinstallingthe
fluesystemthroughtheceilingandroof.Heatresistantwallscoveredwithheatsensitivesurface
treatments(e.g.wallpaperorheatsensitivepaints)shouldberegardedasheatsensitivewalls.
The flue shielding and the 25mm clearance gap around it above the ceiling will occupy a
diameterof300mm(Grandview,ColoradoandToronto325mm),andthismustbeavailable
withouttheremovalofstructuralbeams.Flueinstallationsotherthanstrictlyverticalonesare
possible.SeecurrentAustralianandNewZealandStandardsforinformationonfluespassing
throughwallsandeaves.

HEARTH(FloorProtector)CONSTRUCTION
InAustraliatheminimumhearthconstructionrequirementisasheetof6mmfibrecement
board.Itisusuallyfasteneddirectlytothefloor.
InNewZealand,onlytheLE3000Series2,thePanoramaandtheGrandviewmodelsrequire
aninsulatinghearth.Allothercurrentmodelsmaybeinstalledonanashhearth.Naturally,all
modelsmaybeinstalledoninsulatinghearthsifdesired.Thenecessaryminimumconstruction
detailsforashandinsulatinghearthsareshownbelow,andsuchconstructionsaresuitablefor
solid timber or particle board floors. Constructions not suitable as insulating hearths are
bricksorconcreteincontactwiththeflooringmaterial.If,however,thefloorisconcreteand
notimberisincontactwithitslowersurfaceintheareawherethehearthwouldnormallybe,
ahearthisnotrequired.Iftilesorpiecesofslateetc.arerequiredfordecorativepurposes,
theymaybeglueddirectlytotheconcretefloor.
Inallcases,inbothcountries,thehearthmustextendrightunderthewoodfireandadurable
topsurfacewillbeneededtoresistdamagefromheatordroppedembers.Obvioussurface
materials are slate, bricks and ceramic tiles. Gaps in the top surfacing material must be
grouted to prevent the penetration of embers. A trim moulding will provide a neat edge
finish.
INSTALLINGTHEFLUE
YouMUSTuseafluesystemwhichcomplieswiththecurrentAustralianorNewZealand
Standardasappropriate.
InAustralia,onlyfluesystemstestedwithyourparticularmodelareapprovedforuse.The
fluesandflueheatshieldstestedinAustraliaatthetimeofprintingaredetailedunderthe
tableonpage4.Flueheatshieldingmustbefittedunlessallheatsensitivematerialisatleast
600mmawayfromthefluesurface.
InNewZealandwerecommendtheuseofgenuineMasportfluekits.TheflueMUSTbe
installedinaccordancewiththedetailedinstructionsaccompanyingit.Grandview,Toronto
andColoradoceilingplatesshouldbe450mmsquare.Aflueheatdeflector,asdetailedon
page4,maybefittedatthebackoftheflue(directlyabovethestove)toachievethereduced
wall clearancesshowninthetable. TheMasport flue heat deflector (Part No 551481) is
recommendedfor150mmflues.
FIXINGTHEWOODFIREINPOSITION
Oncetheflueshieldingsystemhasbeeninstalledthroughtheceilingandroof,thewoodfire
canbeplacedinitsapproximatepositiononthehearth,andthefluepipesinstalled.Finally
adjustthestovepositionmakingsuretheflueisverticalandthatthenecessary minimum
woodfire-to-wall distances are being achieved. New Zealand Standards require that the
woodfireandhearthbesecuredtopreventshiftingintheeventofanearthquake.Thisisbest
donebyfasteningthewoodfirerightthroughthehearthtothefloor,usingtwoscrewsnot
lessthan 12gauge, or theequivalent size of coachbolts or toggle fasteners. Anchor the
appliance through the holes in the seismic restraint bracket or in the two angle brackets
supplied.Theanglebracketsattachateachsideofthepedestal(exceptfortheLE2000,
wheretheyattachattherear).Thepedestalcanbefastenedtotheseismicrestraintbracket
eitherbeforeorafterfittingtheanchorscrews.Thesmallcentrelineholeinthebracketwill
helpinpre-positioningit. 8
FINALASSEMBLY
Beforeusingthewoodfire,theinternalfireboxcomponentsmustbeplacedintheircorrect
positions.Noforceshouldberequiredtofitthem,andtheycanberemoved,ifdesired,for
fluecleaning.However,theyMUSTbeinplace,andingoodcondition,beforelightingthe
fire.
AllMasportmodelsaresuppliedwitheitherfire-bricksorinsulatingboardtolinethefirebox.
TheLE2000hasinsulatingboardalreadyfixedinpositionatthefactory.Intheothermodels,
twobricksorboardsaretobefittedacrossthebackofthefireboxwall,andtheotherswillfit
againsttheendwalls.Eachbrickorboardisfittedinthesameway.Angleitintoposition
withitstopcornerbehindtheupperretaininglug,thenswingituntilitisparalleltothewall
withitsbottomcornerbehindthelowerretaininglug.Lowerthebrickorboardintoposition.
Insomemodelstherearetwoorboardsateachend.Fitthemetalretainingchanneloverthe
topedgesofthesebrickstoholdtheminline.Thewiderlegofthechannelgoesnexttothe
fireboxwall.
Carefullyremovethepolystyrenepackingabovethefireboxtopbaffle,rememberingthatthe
bafflecanbebrokenbyroughhandling.Makesurethatthebaffleiscorrectlyplacedontopof
thesupportingshelvesateachsideofthefirebox,andthatitisbackfarenoughforthetwo
frontcornerstodropbehindtheretainingribsontopoftheshelves.Onsomemodels,ametal
reinforcingchannelisprovidedforthebaffle.Fitthisalongtheedgeofthebafflenearestthe
door.
Incaseswhereapedestalfootistobefitted,simplyfitthetrimintothefootandslidethe
assemblyontothepedestal,keepingthefootincontactwiththehearthallthetimetoavoid
markingthefinishonthesidesofthepedestal.
Finally,refitthedoor,ifnecessary,andspreadthesandprovidedevenlyoverthebottomof
thefireboxbeforelightingthefirstfire. 9
INSTALLINGAWATERHEATINGBOOSTER
WaterheatingboostertubescanbefittedtowoodfiressoldinNewZealand.Fittingawater
boostertubeconvertsan/Smodelintoa/Wtype.Ifatubeisretro-fitted,insomecasesthe

Water booster tubeholesare provided and plugged inthe back wall of the free-standing
firebox and the side walls of the in-built model. All plumbing work must meet the
requirements of NZS 4603 unless local building regulations dictate otherwise. Pipe
connectionsare1”BSPandthepipepositionsareillustratedbelow.Specialpipingmethods
mustbefollowedtoensureeffectivecirculation,andthehotwatercylinderwillneedtohave
an internal riser pipe to two thirds of the cylinder height to discourage unwanted water
circulationwhenthewoodfireisnotburning.Thisinternalriserpipemustbeconnectedto
thereturnpipefromthewoodfire.
Foreffectivecirculation,thepipesfromthewoodfireshouldriseattherateofoneinfive
towardthestoragecylinder,andideallythecylindershould bewithinthreemetresofthe
woodfire.Detailedpipinginstructionsareincludedinthekit, but twosafetyrequirements
deservespecialmention.

FIREPLACE
Forasafeinstallationthefollowingmattersmustbeattendedto.
•Thefireplaceandchimneymustbethoroughlycleanedandcheckedforsoundness.
•Thechimneymustnotconnecttoasecondfireplace.
•Thejointbetweenthechimneyfaceandthefireplacesurroundmustbecheckedandsealed
topreventleakageifnecessary.
•Thefireplacerecessmust have a non-metallic heat resistant surround extending at least
455mm (N.Z.), 480mm (Aust.), or 540mm (for the LE 7000) each side of the recess
centrelineanduptoatleast810mmabovethebaseofthefireplacerecess.
•In New Zealand, the fireplace and chimney must comply with all the relevant Building
Codes,exceptthatthespecifiedseparationbetweentheoutsideofthechimneyandtimber
constructionneednotbeprovided.Timbermaytouchtheoutsideofanypartofthechimney.
•Afluepipemustbefittedrightupthechimney,andthespacebetweenthefluepipeand

shownbelowaremeasuredfromtheundersurfaceoftheshelftothebottomofthefireplace
recess.
InAustralia,allshelveslessthan1075mmhighrequireshielding.
InNewZealand,allshelveslessthan1075mmhighrequireshieldingunlesstheyprojectless
than75mmandareatleast955mmhigh.
Where shielding is needed we recommend a sheet metal shield fixed 20mm below the
undersurfaceoftheshelf.Itmustshieldtheentiredepthoftheunder-surfaceoftheshelf,and
the20mmspacemustbeopenattheendsandfronttoallowairtocirculatefreely.

inthestovewithoutrequiringanoffset.Ifanoffsetisneeded,fixittothelowerendofthe
assembledfluesectionsinthechimneyandlifttheflueassemblyupwhilethefireboxcaseis
pushedbackintotherecess.Adjustthecasepositionsothatitislevelanditsflangeisinline
withthefaceofthesurround.(Ifafasciaextendingkitisbeingused,theflangeshouldbe

Laythefasciacomponentsfacedownonthefloorandusethewafer-headscrewstoassemble
thetwosidepanels,themantel-shelfandthebottombrace.(Seeillustrationonpage13).The
wafer-headscrewsgo throughthe back flangesof theside panelsinto theflanges of the
mantel-shelfandbottombrace.(Seeillustration).Makesuretheassemblyissquare.
Oncethisiscomplete,carefullyturnthefasciaoverandconfirmthatthespacingbetweenthe
sidepanelsiscorrectbyofferingtheashshelfuptothefascia.Theashshelfhangsontwo
postsatthelowerendsofthesidepanels.(Feedthemainsflexforthefanthroughtheside
panelwhileplacingtheshelfinposition).Firstengagetherightendoftheshelfandthenthe
left.Ifthesidepanelspacingdoesnotpermiteasyassembly,slackenthewafer-headassembly

BASICINFORMATION
DOORHANDLE
Frontmountedhandles.Swingthedooropenandshutwiththehandleinthe12o’clock
position.Latchthedoorshutbypushinginonthehandleandturningit to the3 o’clock
position.
Sidemountedhandles.Thedoor isopenedbypullingforwardonthelowerpart ofthe
handle.Holdthehandleinthisforwardpositionwhenshuttingthedoor,finallypushingit
backtoverticaltolockthedoor.
HEATOUTPUTCONTROL
Thiscontrolhasaslidingaction.Itisclearlymarkedwithawedgeshapedsymbol.Slidethe
controltowardthewideendofthewedgetoincreasetheheatoutputandtowardthenarrow
endtodecreaseit.Ahighfirecanbeshutdownrapidlyonlybystarvingitofair,andthiswill
result inundesirableemissions. For this reason, Masport woodfires are designed to settle
downtolowerheatoutputscomparativelyslowly.
OVERNIGHTBURNING
Oldfashionedstovedesignsattemptedtoachievelongburntimesbystarvingthefuelofair,
thus creating over-rich fuel/air mixtures and emitting pollutants. Modern designs avoid
pollutionbyeliminatingairstarvation.Thismightseemtoruleoutovernightburning,butthis
isnotsoprovidedthatasuitablefuelisused.Hardwoodfuelsgivelongerlow-burntimes
thansoftwoods,whilethickerpiecesoffuelburnlongerthanthinones.
FANOPERATION
TheLE7000Provincialshouldnotbeoperatedonmaximumheatwithverydrysoftwood
unlessthefanisoperating.Usingthefan,exceptwhenthefireissetonLOW,willimprove
theheatingefficiencyanddistributionofwarmairintheroom.Usuallyamediumfanspeed
settingwillbeadequate.

woodfireshouldnotberunathigherthanhalfsettingafterthefirst30minutesuntilithas
beenusedforatotalof8hours.
Thespecialhightemperaturepaintonthefireboxwillemitsomesmokeasitcuresduringthe
firstfewminutesofrunning.Thisisquitenormal.
OPERATINGHINTSFORCLEANBURNINGANDBESTEFFICIENCY
•Useonlywoodthathasbeenairdriedinashelteredstack,preferablyforatleast12months.
Ifmoistfuelmustbeused,additonlytoareallyhotfire,mixingitwithalargeproportionof
dryfuel.InCleanAirZones,onlywoodmustbeusedasfuel,anditmusthaveamoisture
contentnotgreaterthan25%(measuredonawetweightbasis).
•Donotburndriftwoodorchemicallytreatedwood,assaltwillcorrodethewoodfireand
chemicalscancreatepoisonousgasesandleavetoxicash.
•Addfuelreasonablyoften.Alargefuelloadplacedonadyingfirecandropcombustion
temperaturesundesirably.
•Avoidlargesmoulderingfires.Asmallintensefireismoreefficient.
•Movetheheatcontroltomaximumforaminuteorsoandturnofftheaircirculatingfan(if
fitted)beforeopeningthedooronalowburningfire.Thiswillclearawayanyfumesinthe
firebox.
•AlwaysopenthedoorSLOWLY,andcloseandlatchitshutsecurely againassoonas
possibleafterre-loading.
•Whenloadingfuel,placethepiecesofwoodinafront-to-backdirectiontoensuregoodair
accessandthecleanest possible burning. To achieve this, wood pieces for the Provincial
CleanAirZone(Christchurch)modelshouldbegenerallyabout250mmlong,andinanycase
shouldnotexceed300mminlength.
•Loadfuelcarefullytoavoiddamagetotheinsulatingboards,firebricksor
topbaffle.
•Ifsmokewaftsintotheroomwhilethedoorisopen,firstcheckthatmake-upaircanflow
freelyintotheroomtoreplacetheairpassinguptheflue.(Seeboxbelow).Thencheckthat
theflueisnotobstructedinanyway,particularlybytheraincapbeingtooclosetotheendof
theflue.Ifthesechecksdonotuncoverthefault,addanextralengthofflue(bracingit,if
necessary)tocounteractthedowndraughteffectscausedbyroofshape,nearbybuildings,
hillsortrees.
•Switchoffthecirculatingfan(iffitted)whenthefireisburningatlowheatoutputs.Use
onlytheslowfanspeedatmediumheatoutput,movingtothehigherspeed(s)onlywhenfull
heatoutputhasbeenreached.
•Adjustthedoortoeliminateanyminorleakage.(SeeMAINTENANCE-page17).Serious
leakagewillrequireanewdoorseal.
REMEMBER,FORTHEFIRETODRAWPROPERLY,AIRMUSTBEABLE
TOENTERTHEROOMWHEREYOURWOODFIREIS INSTALLED.YOU

ASHREMOVAL
This should be necessary only very occasionally. Simply shovel out any excess, always
leavingabedofsandorashtothetopsoftheribsonthebottomofthefirebox.
CLEANINGTHEGLASS
Agoodhotfirewillburnawayanydepositsleftfromalongslowburn.Ifdesired,aNON-
CAUSTICovencleanercanbeused.
CLEANINGTHECABINETORFASCIA
Adampragwithatouchofhouseholddetergentissufficienttomaintainthefinish.
ADJUSTINGTHEDOORLATCH
Ifthehandleisfrontmounted,thelatchcanbeadjustedtoovercomesettlingofthedoor
gasketbytransferringawashertotheoutsideofthedoorcatchspindle.Ifthehandleisside
mounted,thelatchisadjustedbyrotatingthedoorcatchpeg.Firstundothelock-nutonthe
insideofthepeg,thenrotatethepegtothepositionwherethecamportiongivestheright
lockingpressure.Holdingthepeginthisposition,re-tightenthelocknut.Thehingeonall
modelscanalsobeadjustedinwardifnecessary.Moveitinaboutamillimetreattopand
bottomtomaintainanevengasketpressure.
CLEANINGINSIDE
Ifyouwishtocleantheflueorclearawaycreosotedebris,theinternalcomponentscanbe
removed easily (See below). We recommend that you check the condition of all internal
componentsatleastonceaseasontomakesuretheyarestillserviceable.
FIREBOXTOPBAFFLE
Thespecialtopbafflematerialoperatesatveryhightemperaturetoensureclean burning.
Takecarenottoknockanddamageit.Forfluecleaningorbafflereplacementthesecondary
airtubemustfirstberemovedbywithdrawingthetwo‘L’shapedpins.Beforeremovingthe
tube,notethedirectionoftheairoutletholessothatitcanbereassembledcorrectly.Slide
thetubeslightly to one side andwithdrawit. Whenreplacing the baffle, ensure that it is
sittingontopofthesupportingshelfateachendandthatitispushedrighttothebackuntil
thefrontcornersdropbehindthesmallretainerribsontheshelves.Re-fitthesecondaryair
tube,takingcaretoreplacebothretainingpins,andmakingsureitiscorrectlyoriented.
FIREBOXLINERS
Whiletheinsulatingboardsorfirebricksaredurable,theywilleventuallyrequirereplacement.
Replacethemiftheyshowsignificantdeterioration.
FANMAINTENANCE
Thefanshouldneedlittleattentionotherthanoccasionallyremovingittocleandustandlint
fromtheimpeller.Firstunplugthefanfromthepowerpoint.Fansonin-builtfirescanbe
accessedbyliftingofftheashshelf.Fansonfree-standingfiresarereachedbyremovingthe
rearofthepedestal.Oninternallyswitchedfans,firstgentlyeaseoffthespeedcontrolknob,
taking care to pull it off squarely. Remove the four screws (two on the Panorama and
Grandview)whichholdthefanboxinposition. If the fan is internally switched, move it
slightlyawayfromtheswitchendandwithdrawitcompletely.InthecaseofthePanorama
andGrandview,liftthefanoffthetwotopsupportpegsandthenwithdrawit.Inallcases,no
wiresneedtobeuncoupled.Cleantheimpellerbladescarefullybyblowingorvacuuming,
andreassembleinthereverseorder.
CLEANINGTHEFLUE
Thismaybeneededaboutonceayearormorefrequentlyunderadverseconditions.Signsof
creosoteandsootbuild-upareinadequatedraught,smokingwhenthedoorisopenedanda
dullthud when the outside of the flue is tapped. A blocked flue can be cleaned only by
sweeping.DONOTUSECHEMICALCHIMNEYCLEANERS.
FLUEINSPECTION
Checkregularlythattheflueissound,particularlythemetalbaseofenamelledflues.
