established.Werecommendrunningatfullheatforuptoonehourafterlightingasthiswill
minimisecreosotebuild-upintheflue.Thecontrolcanthenbesetwhereverdesired.Anew
woodfireshouldnotberunathigherthanhalfsettingafterthefirst30minutesuntilithas
beenusedforatotalof8hours.
Thespecialhightemperaturepaintonthefireboxwillemitsomesmokeasitcuresduringthe
firstfewminutesofrunning.Thisisquitenormal.
OPERATINGHINTSFORCLEANBURNINGANDBESTEFFICIENCY
•Useonlywoodthathasbeenairdriedinashelteredstack,preferablyforatleast12months.
Ifmoistfuelmustbeused,additonlytoareallyhotfire,mixingitwithalargeproportionof
dryfuel.InCleanAirZones,onlywoodmustbeusedasfuel,anditmusthaveamoisture
contentnotgreaterthan25%(measuredonawetweightbasis).
•Donotburndriftwoodorchemicallytreatedwood,assaltwillcorrodethewoodfireand
chemicalscancreatepoisonousgasesandleavetoxicash.
•Addfuelreasonablyoften.Alargefuelloadplacedonadyingfirecandropcombustion
temperaturesundesirably.
•Avoidlargesmoulderingfires.Asmallintensefireismoreefficient.
•Movetheheatcontroltomaximumforaminuteorsoandturnofftheaircirculatingfan(if
fitted)beforeopeningthedooronalowburningfire.Thiswillclearawayanyfumesinthe
firebox.
•AlwaysopenthedoorSLOWLY,andcloseandlatchitshutsecurely againassoonas
possibleafterre-loading.
•Whenloadingfuel,placethepiecesofwoodinafront-to-backdirectiontoensuregoodair
accessandthecleanest possible burning. To achieve this, wood pieces for the Provincial
CleanAirZone(Christchurch)modelshouldbegenerallyabout250mmlong,andinanycase
shouldnotexceed300mminlength.
•Loadfuelcarefullytoavoiddamagetotheinsulatingboards,firebricksor
topbaffle.
•Ifsmokewaftsintotheroomwhilethedoorisopen,firstcheckthatmake-upaircanflow
freelyintotheroomtoreplacetheairpassinguptheflue.(Seeboxbelow).Thencheckthat
theflueisnotobstructedinanyway,particularlybytheraincapbeingtooclosetotheendof
theflue.Ifthesechecksdonotuncoverthefault,addanextralengthofflue(bracingit,if
necessary)tocounteractthedowndraughteffectscausedbyroofshape,nearbybuildings,
hillsortrees.
•Switchoffthecirculatingfan(iffitted)whenthefireisburningatlowheatoutputs.Use
onlytheslowfanspeedatmediumheatoutput,movingtothehigherspeed(s)onlywhenfull
heatoutputhasbeenreached.
•Adjustthedoortoeliminateanyminorleakage.(SeeMAINTENANCE-page17).Serious
leakagewillrequireanewdoorseal.
REMEMBER,FORTHEFIRETODRAWPROPERLY,AIRMUSTBEABLE
TOENTERTHEROOMWHEREYOURWOODFIREIS INSTALLED.YOU
MAY HAVE TO LEAVE A DOOR SLIGHTLY OPEN AND PERHAPS A
WINDOWELSEWHEREINTHEHOUSEIFYOURHOMEISOFMODERN
AIRTIGHT CONSTRUCTION. LEAVING THE ROOM DOOR OPEN WILL
HELPSPREADWARMTHTHROUGHTHERESTOFYOURHOME.
