Tektronix warrants that this product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period o f one (1)
year from the date of shipment. If any such product proves defective during this warranty period, Tektronix, at its
option, either will repair the defective product without charge for parts and labor, o r will provide a replacement
in exchange for the defective product. Parts, modules and replac ement products used by Tektronix for warranty
work may be n
ew or reconditioned to like new performance. All replaced parts, modules and products become
the property of Tektronix.
In order to o
btain service under this warranty, Customer must notify Tektronix of the defect b efore the expiration of
the warranty period and make suitable arrangements for the performance of service. Customer shall be responsible
for packaging and shipping the defective product to the service center designated by Tektronix, with shipping
charges prepaid. Tektronix shall pay for the return o f the product to Customer if the shipment is to a location within
the country in which the Tektronix service center is located. Customer shall be responsible for paying all shipping
charges, duties, taxes, and any other charges for products returned to any other locations.
This warranty shall not apply to any defect, failure or damage caused by improper use or improper or inadequate
maintenance and care. Tektronix shall not be obligated to furnish service under this warranty a) to repair damage

ing from attempts by personnel other than Tektronix representatives to install, repair or service the product;

Use proper power cord. Use only the power cord specied for this product and
certied for the country of use.
Connect and disconnect properly. Do not connect or disconnect probes or test
leads while they are connected to a voltage source.
Ground the product. This product is grounded through the g rounding conductor
of the power cord. To avoid electric shock, the grounding conductor must be
connected to earth ground. Before making connections to the input or output
terminals of the product, ensure that the product is properly grounded.
Observe all terminal ratings. To avoid re or shock hazard, observe all ratings
and markings on the product. Consult the product manual for further ratings
information before making connections to the product.
The inputs are not rated for connection to mains or Category II, III, or IV circuits.
Connect the probe reference lead to earth ground only.
Power disconnect. The power cord disconnects the product from the power source.

Introduction
This manual contains information needed to properly service the logic analyzer.
This introduction contains information critical to safe and effective servicing.
To prevent personal injury or damage to the logic analyzer, consider the following
requirements before attempting service:
Read the General Safety Summary and Service Safety Summary found at the
beginning of this manual.
The procedures in this manual should only be performed by a qualied service
person.
Read the Preface.
Read the Operating Information chapter.

Product description
The TLA
6400 Series Logic Analyzers are stand-alone logic analyzers. The
following list shows the base congurations; instrument functionality can be
upgraded via PoweFlex options purchased separately:
TLA6401–34 channel logic analyzer, with 40 ps MagniVu timing, 333 MHz
state clock, 2 Mb record length
TLA6402–68 channel logic analyzer, with 40 ps MagniVu timing, 333 MHz
state clock, 2 Mb record length
TLA6403–102 channel logic analyzer, with 40 ps MagniVu timing, 333 MHz
state clock, 2 Mb record length
TLA6404–136 channel logic analyzer, with 40 ps MagniVu timing, 333 MHz
state clock, 2 Mb record length
The logic analyzers are built on the Microsoft Windows operating system, which
allows you to install PC-compatible, third-party hardware and software on the
instrument.
The user interface operates under the Microsoft Windows operating system.
Microsoft recommends the following to make sure your instrument is protected:
Use an internet rewall.
Install operating system updates regularly.
Use up-to-date antivirus software.

Generally, you should perform the procedures described in the TLA6400 Series
Logic Analyzer Product Specications & Performance Verication Technical
Reference Manual (Tektronix part number, 077-0634-xx) once per year, or
following repairs that affect adjustment or calibration.

This manual supports and contains information needed for periodic maintenance
or corrective maintenance of the logic analyzer:
Supports isolation of faults to the failed circuit board or assembly level s hown

Agreements
If service options are not added to the instrument purchase, then service
agreements are available on an annual basis to provide calibration
services or post-warranty repair coverage. Service agreements m ay be
customized to meet special turn-around time and/or on-site requirements.
Service on
Demand
Tektronix offers calibration and repair services on a “per incident” basis
that is available with standard prices.
Self Service Tektronix supports repair to the replaceable-part level by providing for
circuit board exchange.
Use this service to reduce down-time for repair by exchanging curcuit
boards for remanufactured ones. Tektronix ships updated and tested
exchange boards. Each board comes with a 90-day service warranty.

CAUTION. Allow a 15.3 cm (6-in) clearance at the back and sides of the instrument
to allow proper cooling. Avoid blocking any exhaust or intake fans or vents when
usin
gtheinstrumentonacartorinaninstrumentrack. Avoidplacingloose
paper or other material near the bottom intake vents that could suck against the
instrument and block air ow. Inadequate clearances can damage the instrument.
Use the logic analyzer on a bench, in an instrument rack, or on a cart in the normal
position (on the bottom feet). The front feet extend to give a better view of the
instrument display.

Use the chassis ground connections to connect the grounds of the target system
(system-under-test) to the logic analyzer to verify a common ground connection
between inst
ruments.
(See Figure 2.)
CAUTION.
To reduce the risk of ground-loop noise, ground all of the instruments in the
system to t
he logic analyzer using the ground connections shown.
Accessory connections
After installing the logic analyzer in the desired location, connect the accessories
such as an external monitor, keyboard, and printer. (See Figure 2.)

Monitor
There are two d
isplay ports on the logic analyzer: V G A , and DVI-I (digital/analog out).
To change the display settings, right-click the mouse on the desktop, and select Screen Resolution.
Note that some of the display settings may not function until you connect an external monitor.
To connect a V
GA monitor to the DVI-I connector, use a VGA-to-DVI adapter. Part numbers for
accessories and options are listed at the end of this manual. If you use a nonstandard monitor, you may
need to change the Windows display settings to obtain the proper resolution.
LAN
Connect the logic analyzer to your network through the Gbit LAN connectors. R emotely control the logic
analyzer th
rough a LAN switch using a PC (loaded with the TLA application software).
Printer
The instru
ments send printer information to the USB ports. Use any of the four USB ports for your printer.
Operating information
This chapter describes the product controls and connectors of the logic a nalyzers.
Refer to the TLA Quick Start User Manual for operating information on the logic
analyzer.
CAUTION. Connecting the accessories after turning on the logic analyzer may
damage
the accessories. Connect a ccessories before applying power to the logic
analyzer.
Power on the instrument
Foll
ow these steps to power on the logic analyzer:
1. Connect the power cord to the logic analyzer.
2. If you have an external monitor, connect the power cord and turn on the
monitor.
3. Press the On/Standby switch to turn on the logic analyzer. (See Figure 3
on page 8.)
4. Wait for the logic analyzer to complete the power-on self tests.
