These are the instructions for fitting the SYS-LINK Version 2 console expander option to the MixWizard
WZ
3
12MON consoles. Two consoles, each with SYS-LINK V2 installed, may be linked together using a
single 37 way cable such that one becomes a channel expander (slave) to the other (master) providing a
total of 32 channels. This links all the mix buses and the PFL/AFL system. The cable is not supplied but
may be ordered separately or sourced elsewhere. Fitting the option requires removal of the rear connector
cover to access the internal assemblies, installation of a circuit card assembly and ribbon harness, and
some soldering. This work should be carried out by technically competent personnel.
For information on how to use SYS-LINK please refer to the Applications Note AP7008. Should further
assistance be required please contact Allen & Heath Technical Support.
Before Starting
Please see MOD information on last page then read these fitting instructions carefully before starting. For
trouble free installation and operation heed all the precautions noted. The console must be fully
unplugged and removed from its rack, plinth or other furniture before carrying out the work. Normal
workshop tools are required. These include Pozi (crosshead) and Torx (starhead) screwdrivers, and a fine
tipped soldering iron. Provide a suitably large, well lit work surface such as a service workshop bench. To
avoid damage to the cosmetics of the console ensure that the work surface is clean and clear of
obstructions. Allow enough time to carry out the work properly and test the results.

Step 5: Fit the SYS-LINK cards to
the console
Each SYS-LINK circuit card assembly is fixed to
the connector panel using two M4 D-type
connector nuts. These are supplied already
fitted to the card’s sockets. Remove the nuts
and place the card into the connector panel
slots, observing the correct slot position and
orientation. Secure the SYS-LINK card by
refitting the D-type nuts, ensuring that they are
fully tightened.
Check that the SYS-LINK IN card is fitted to the
top slot, and SYS-LINK OUT card fitted to the
lower slot.
Step 6: Connect the OUT card
Plug one end of the supplied short IDC harness
AL6098 into header CN1 on the SYS-LINK OUT
card. Plug the other end into the corresponding
IDC header CN236 on the connector card.
Step 7: Remove the clamp bracket
and blanking plate
Remove the five M3 nuts that fix the clamp
bracket to the connector pod chassis. Remove
the clamp bracket. Remove the two M3 blanking
plate screws from the User Option Port A on rear
of the connector pod. Remove the blanking
plate.
Step 8: Connect the IN card
Take the harness of Mix 1, 2, 3 and 4 and plug
one of the connectors into the slave PCB then
plug the slave PCB back on to Mix 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Plug long harness AL7005 into CN6 on the slave
card.
Run the harness back through the console,
passing the unconnected end through the first
opening of the chassis connector.
RUN IDC HARNESSES

Step 9: Connect the SYS-LINK power
Both option cards get their power from the
console +15V and -15V rails available at solder
pads on the rear connector PCB.
Solder the SYS-LINK card sleeved red and
black wires to the connector card: red to (+15),
black to (-15), green to ground 0V. Check that
the solder joints are of good quality.
GREEN = GROUND
BLACK = -15V
RED = +15V
Step 10: Refit the clamp bracket
The clamp bracket securing nuts
should be tightened just enough to prevent
excessive movement of the IDC harnesses.
Do not overtighten as this may cause
damage to the harnesses.
Refit the clamp bracket using the five M3 nuts.
The positions of the IDC harnesses may need
adjusting to allow enough slack on either side
when the clamp is tightened.
Step 11: Refit the connector panel
Check your work carefully and ensure that there
is no dirt or debris inside the connector pod.
Ensure that all IDC harnesses are correctly
inserted and positioned.
Carefully refit the connector panel to the
console. Replace the ten M3x6 Pozi screws - six
at the rear of the connector panel and two at
each side.
Step 12: Refit the base
Check that all harnesses are correctly inserted
and positioned, then carefully replace the base
panel and refit the four underside base M3x6
Pozi screws. Rotate the connector pod and refit
the three M3x6 Torx rear base fixing screws.
Rotate the pod again and secure it in place with
the two M4x8 flange Pozi screws. Refit the side
trims if required using the one M4x10 and three
M4x8 Pozi screws per side.
Step 12: Apply the panel label
With all panels refitted, stick on the adhesive
label AN7066 supplied with the kit. This
identifies the top connector as SYS-LINK OUT
and the lower connector as SYS-LINK IN.
Step 13: Test
With all panels refitted, connect to the mains
supply. Power on and check for correct
operation.
Step 14: The cable
A 37way male to male D-type cable is required
to interconnect two consoles fitted with the SYS-
LINK option. Use 36-core shielded cable with
the 36 connections wired one to one and the
screen soldered to pin 19. Maximum
recommended length is 10 metres.

W312M SYS-Link MOD
The SysLink PFL detect circuits depends on a
good connection between the SysLink PCB’s
and the console chassis, the following
modification ensures that this can occur.
Add a wire link between the chassis connection
for P105 on the SysLink In card and a chassis
connection point in the console (the earth lug of
one of the ¼” jacks).
Add a wire link between the chassis connection
for P205 on the SysLink Out card and a chassis
connection point in the console (the earth lug of
one of the jacks).
Please note the following:
To make it easier to fit the Slave PCB to the
console, cut off the last three 40 way IDC
“bump” connectors from the main loom. The
fourth 40-way IDC “bump” connector plugs into
the Slave PCB and the Slave PCB then plugs
into the 4 x Mix Master PCB’s
When fitting or removing the console connector
panel with a SysLink Out PCB installed, always
loosen the “D” connector nuts. This enables the
SysLink Out PCB to drop down out of the way of
the metalwork when the connector panel is
removed or fitted. Make sure that once the
connector panel is fitted that you tighten the “D”
connector nuts again or the PCB may short out
on the chassis. Do not over-tighten the nuts or
they will break, firm but not tight is a good motto
here.
SysLink will only work if the Master Console is in
Mono Mode. SysLink only links to the Mono
busses on the receiving console. While it is
preferable for both consoles to be in Mono
Mode, if the Slave Console is switched to Stereo
Mode and the Master Console is switched to
Mono Mode then all will work.
THIS MOD DOSE NOT NEED TO BE FITTED
IF THE MIX MASTERS ARE ISSUE 4 OR
ABOVE.
Remove the Mix Master 3, 7, 11 PCB from the
Slave console (the second last master PCB)
Wire between Pin-38 of CN11 and the back of
P10
The PCB track of the Mix Master 3 board is to be
cut in two places. Cut between resistor R172
and Q16 (a very small gap), and also
cut between Pin-38 of CN11 and the base of of
Q16.
Add a 100K resistor in between R172 and Q16
Refit Mix Master 3 to the console.
