SafetyInstructionsforRackMountInstallations
Theinstructionsbelow(orsimilar)areintendedforrackmountinstallationenvironments:
1. ElevatedOperatingAmbientTemperature:ifinstalledinaclosedormultiunitrackassembly,theoperatingambient
temperatureoftherackenvironmentmayexceedroomambient.Installtheequipmentinanenvironment
compatiblewiththemaximumambienttemperature(Tma)specified.
2. ReducedAirFlow:installtheequipmentinaracksothattheamountofairflowrequiredforsafeoperationisnot
compromised.
3. MechanicalLoading:Mounttheequipmentintheracksothatahazardousconditiondoesnotoccurduetouneven
mechanicalloading(weightdistribution/rackbalance).
4. CircuitOverloading:giveconsiderationtotheconnectionoftheequipmenttothesupplycircuitandtheeffectthat
overloadingofthecircuitsmighthaveonovercurrentprotectionandsupplywiring.Considerallequipment
nameplateratingswhenaddressingthisconcern.
5. ReliableEarthing:maintainreliableearthingofrackmountedequipment;payparticularattentiontosupply
connectionsotherthandirectconnectionstothebranchcircuit(e.g.,useofpowerstrips).

connectorsfordustorimperfections.Toachievethebestpossibleperformance,followtheseguidelines:
Topreventdamage,keeptheconnectors’protectivecoveronwhennotinuse.
Usecareinhandlingallfiberopticconnectors.
Visuallyinspectfiberendsforsignsofdamage.
Alwayscleanandinspectfiberconnectorspriortomakingaconnection.

5. Whencalculatingopticalloss,ensurethatthetotalloss,plusasafetyfactor(typically3dB)doesnotexceedthe
opticalpowerbudget(thedifferencebetweenthetransmitteropticaloutputpowerandthereceiver’soptical
sensitivity).Seetheequipmentmanufacturers’documentationforthetransmitteropticaloutputpowerandreceiver
opticalsensitivityvalues.
