Your individual vehicle
When you ordered your BMW, you chose vari-
ous items of equipment. This Owner's Hand-
book describes all models and equipment
specifications which BMW offers within this
particular model line.
This explains why the Owner's Handbook may
also contain details of items which you have not
ordered. The differences can easily be identi-
fied by the asterisk
* shown against optional
extras.
Should your BMW feature equipment which is
not described in this Owner's Handbook,
please refer to the Supplementary Owner's
Handbooks supplied with your vehicle.
In vehicles with right-hand drive, some of
the controls are arranged differently from
those shown in the illustrations of this Owner's
Handbook.<
Status at time of printing
The high safety and quality standards of BMW
vehicles are maintained by unceasing develop-
ment work on designs, equipment and acces-
sories. In rare instances, your car may therefore
differ from the information supplied in the
Owner's Handbook.
For your own safety
Maintenance and repair
The advanced technology behind this car,
for example the use of modern materials
and high-performance electronics, means that
specially adapted methods of maintenance and
repair are required. Always have the necessary
work on your BMW performed either by BMW
Service or by a workshop that operates to BMW
specifications and has suitably trained person-
nel. If such work is performed inexpertly, it could
result in consequential damage and thus con-
stitute a safety risk.<
Parts and accessories
BMW recommends using parts and
accessory products on this vehicle that
are specifically approved for this purpose by
BMW.
You are recommended to consult BMW Service
for advice on Genuine BMW parts and accesso-
ries, other BMW-approved products and com-
petent advice on all related matters.
The safety, function and suitability of these
parts and products have been checked by
BMW. BMW accepts product liability for them.
BMW cannot accept liability for parts or acces-
sory products of any kind which it has not
approved.
BMW is unable to assess each individual prod-
uct of outside origin as to its suitability for use
on BMW vehicles without safety risk. This suit-
ability cannot be guaranteed even if an official
permit has been issued for the particular prod-
uct in a specific country. Tests performed for
such permits cannot always cover all operating
conditions for BMW vehicles, and some of them
therefore are insufficient.<

Indicator and warning lights
The principle
Indicator and warning lights can come on in var-
ious combinations and colours, both in panel 1
and display 2.
Some lights are checked for proper functioning
and thus come on briefly when the engine starts
or the ignition is switched on.
What to do in the event of a fault
A list of all indicator and warning lights, as well
as notes on the possible cause of a fault and on
what corresponding measures should be taken,
can be found starting on page 116.

Keys/remote controls
1 Each remote control has an integrated key.
Power is supplied by a long-life rechargea-
ble battery that is automatically recharged
when it is in the ignition lock while the car is
being driven. Consequently, you should use
each remote control at least twice a year in
order to keep the batteries charged. The
settings called up and implemented when
the car is unlocked depend on which
remote control is used to unlock the car, see
Personal Profile, next page.
In addition, information about service
requirements is stored in the remote con-
trol, see Service data in the remote control,
page 104.
2 Spare key to be kept in a safe place, for
instance in a purse or wallet. This key is not
intended for regular use.
3 The adapter is designed to hold your spare
key. It can be connected on the inner left-
hand side of the glove box lid. You will find
more information about the adapter under
Using the adapter for a spare key.
Integrated key of remote control and
spare key
The integrated key and spare key enable you to:
> Lock all the doors, the fuel filler flap and the
luggage compartment lid together, see
page 18
> Unlock and lock the glove box, see page 77
> Unlock and lock the driver's door in the
event of an electrical defect, for example,
see page 18
> Deactivate and activate front passenger air-
bags
*, see page 33
> Unlock and lock the luggage compartment
lid, see page 19
Disengaging the integrated key
Press button 1 to release the key.
Using the adapter for a spare key
The adapter is necessary for starting the car
with the spare key or switching on radio readi-
ness.
Before using, insert the spare key into the
adapter.
New remote controls
BMW Service can supply new remote controls
as additional units or as replacements in the
event of loss.

Personal Profile
You can set many of your BMW's functions to
suit your personal needs and preferences.
Without any action on your part, Personal Pro-
file ensures that most of these settings are
saved for the remote control currently in use.
When you unlock the car the remote control
used for the purpose is recognised and the set-
tings saved for it are called up and imple-
mented.
This means that your personal settings are
active when you return to your BMW, even if the
car was used in the interim by someone else
with a remote control of their own and the set-
tings were changed accordingly.
You can configure a maximum of three remote
controls for three different persons. This pre-
supposes that each person has his or her own
remote control.

the pages referred to.

Central locking system
The principle
The central locking becomes active when the
driver's door is closed.
The following are unlocked or locked in combi-
nation:
> Doors
> Luggage compartment lid
> Fuel filler flap
Operation of the central locking system
from outside
> Via the remote control
> Via the door lock
> With convenient access
* by means of the
handles on the driver's and the front pas-
senger's door
When operating the system from the outside,
the deadlocks are operated at the same time.
The latter prevent the doors from being
unlocked either at the safety lock buttons or
door handles. The interior light and the ground
lights
* are also switched on or off with the
remote control. The alarm system
* is also
armed or disarmed.
For further details of the alarm system
*, see
page 20.
Operation of the central locking system
from inside
By means of the button for central locking, see
page 19.
In the event of a sufficiently severe accident, the
central locking system unlocks automatically. In
addition, the hazard warning flashers and the
interior light are switched on.

Opening and closing:
from the outside
With the remote control
Protect the remote control from unau-
thorised use by providing only the spare
key in a hotel, for example.<
Persons remaining in the car or pets left
inside can lock the doors from the inside.
Always take the remote control with you, so that
the car can be opened from the outside.<
Unlocking
Press the button.
The interior light and the doors' ground lights
*
come on.
On certain national-market versions,
press the button twice, the first time to
unlock the driver's door, the second time to
release the remaining locks.<
Convenient opening
Hold the button pressed. The electric win-
dows
and the glass roof* are opened.
Locking
Press the button.
Do not lock the car from the outside when
there is someone inside it, as it cannot
then be unlocked from the inside.<
Convenient closing
Hold the button pressed. The electric
windows
and the glass roof* are closed.
The outside mirrors are automatically folded
in
*.
Watch the closing movement to ensure
that no-one is trapped. The closing pro-
cedure is interrupted immediately if the button
is released.<
Switching on the interior light
While the car is locked:
Press the button.
This function also enables you to locate the car,
for instance in a parking garage.
Unlocking the luggage compartment
lid
Press the button for about one second.
The luggage compartment lid opens a short
way, regardless of whether it was locked or
unlocked.
In order to avoid damage, make sure there
is sufficient clearance in all directions
before opening the luggage compartment lid.
If the luggage compartment lid was previously
locked, it will be locked again as soon as it is
closed.
Before and after each trip, check that the lug-
gage compartment lid has not been inadvert-
ently unlocked.<
Malfunctions
The remote control may malfunction as a result
of interference from local radio signals. If this
occurs, unlock and lock the car at the door lock
with the integrated key.
If the car can no longer be locked with a remote
control, the battery in the remote control is flat.
Use this remote control when driving a relatively
long distance to recharge its battery, see
page 16.
Via the door lock
Do not lock the car from the outside when
there is someone inside it, as it cannot
then be unlocked from the inside.<
In some national versions, the alarm sys-
tem
* is triggered when the door lock is
unlocked.

To switch off the alarm:
Unlock the car with the remote control, see
page 18, or insert the remote control fully into
the ignition lock.<
For further details of the alarm system, see
page 20.
Convenient operation*
You can operate the electric windows and the
glass roof
* by means of the door lock, and you
can also fold the outside mirrors in and out
*.
Hold the integrated key in the position for
unlocking or locking.
Watch the closing movement to ensure
that no-one is trapped. The movement is
stopped when the key is released.<
Manual operation
In the event of an electrical fault, you can lock
and unlock the driver's door by turning the inte-
grated key or the spare key to the limit positions
in the door lock.
Opening and closing:
from the inside
This button locks or unlocks the doors and lug-
gage compartment lid when the front doors are
closed, but does not deadlock them. The fuel
filler flap remains unlocked
*.
Unlocking and opening
> Either unlock the doors together using the
central locking button and then pull the
door handle above the armrest or
> pull the door handle out twice at any door:
the first pull unlocks the door, the second
one opens it.
Locking
> Either lock all doors at once via the central
locking button, or
> press down the safety lock button of a door.
To prevent that you are shut out of the car
accidentally, the driver's door cannot be
locked with the safety lock button when it is
open.
Persons remaining in the car or pets left
inside can lock the doors from the inside.
Always take the remote control with you, so that
the car can be opened from the outside.<
Luggage compartment lid
