Introduction
Features
This product is a sensor system that analyzes the pedaling of a bicycle in real time. It calculates the direction and
intensity of the force acting on the pedals and calculates pedaling efciency.
Description of components
Strain gauge unit: Detects the strain on the crank and calculates the direction and intensity of the force on the crank.
Magnet ring: Used to detect the angle of rotation.
Transmitters: Send information from the strain gauge unit and the magnet ring to the Cyclocomputer.
Switching modes
The switches in the left and right transmitters change the system to the following modes.
Pedaling mode:
Used in combination with the Cyclocomputer SGX-CA900.
This mode calculates pedaling efciency and maximizes the functionality of the product.
Power meter mode:
Used with a Cyclocomputer that supports ANT+™.
This product is ANT+™ certied.

The product is compatible with the following crank sets.

This product is designed to be used for recreational cycling and cycle training applications only and is not designed to withstand
racing conditions.
Additionally, this product is designed to be used while cycling on paved roads only. Any damage or malfunction arising from
use in racing or riding on dirt roads, cobblestone or any other unpaved roads will not be covered by the manufacturer’s limited
warranty.
Installing, pairing, and calibrating the product requires specialized techniques and tools. Ask the shop where you
bought the product to install, pair, and calibrate it.
Please note that the crank set and bottom bracket may be damaged by mounting the sensors.

Before starting the installation, touch a large metal object (such as a door knob or metal table) to discharge any static electric
charge in your body.
Eliminate static electric charge occasionally while installing the product.

Rubber gaskets
The following tools are necessary for installation, calibration, and repairs. Make sure that you have the tools you need before
you start working.
Items with an asterisk [*] are consumable.
Refer to the documentation for your crank set regarding the bicycle tools you need (chainring and crank set installation tools).
You need to procure adapters for sensor guides (left/right) and pressure bonding tools (left/right) that are suitable for the cranks on which
you are installing them.
Before using the adhesive for the sensors, use an oil-base pen to mark the cap in one location and the container in two locations as
shown in the diagram.

Getting Ready
Before installing the sensors, conrm that they operate correctly.

Use a Philip’s screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove the left and right transmitter covers.

Remove the batteries if there are in the left and right transmitter.

Check that the mode switches are in pedaling mode.

Insert the batteries (CR2032), conrm that the green LEDs light within a few seconds and ash for 10
seconds.

Using any battery other than CR2032 batteries could damage the product.
If the LEDs do not light, or if only one side lights, replace the batteries. If they still do not light, the batteries may be dead. Replace them
with new batteries.
If the LEDs light red, refer to Troubleshooting (page 47).

Remove the batteries, install the transmitters cover and tighten the screws.
Use a tool that can measure the torque to tighten the screws.
Tightening torque: 18 cN•m
Tighten the screws on the left transmitter in a diagonal pattern.

Setting up the Pressure Bonding Tool

Mount the pressure bonding tool on the table, turn the knob counterclockwise to raise the pressure
bonding surface to the top.
When you mount the pressure bonding tools on the edge of the table, separate them by about 30 centimeters.

Insert the adapter so the arrow points to the right and use a clamp to x it in position.
There are two types of adapters, a left and a right. Assemble the adapter for the crank on which you are installing the
sensor.

Removing Crank Set
Placing the Bicycle in a Secure Work Position
Place the bicycle in a level location, such as in a repair stand or indoor trainer.
Be sure to secure it so that it will not fall while you are working.
Removing Crank Set
Remove the crank set from the bicycle and then remove the chainrings from the crank set.
Refer to the documentation for your crank set regarding how to remove the crank set and the chainrings.

Cleaning the Crank
Clean all oil and dirt from the left and right cranks.

Use rags, with solvent (such as acetone) that will not damage the cranks, to clean the part of the cranks
shown in the diagram, and continue cleaning until no dirt is left on the rag after wiping the crank.
If the dirt is ingrained, clean it until it is smooth when you rub your nger on it.
Use a razor blade to remove any stubborn debris that solvent and rags alone can’t remove. When you do this, be careful
that you do not scratch the crank.

Use a new rag to nish up by wiping the cranks dry.
After wiping the rags dry, make sure there are no threads or other materials from the rags left on the cranks.
Be careful that your ngers do not touch the areas that you cleaned before the sensors are pressure bonded.

Checking the Position to Mount the Sensor
Set the sensor guides for the left and right cranks, make sure the cranks are not scratched.

Insert the right sensor guide into the guide base.
Conrm there are no foreign objects on the surface of the sensor guide.

Insert the right crank into the guide base.

Make sure there are no deep scratches in the area on which the strain gauge unit is installed (diagram
below).
If there are scratches so deep that the base metal (silver) can be seen, measurements cannot be done and installation is not possible.
Installation can be done if the scratches are only shallow scuff marks.

Remove the right crank and right sensor guide from the guide base.

Cut off two 5-mm pieces of double-sided tape for the sensor guide, stick it to the left and right sensor
guides in the position shown in the diagram and remove the non-adhesive backing paper with tweezers.

Insert the sensors into the left and right sensor guides.
Press on the strain gauge unit, press from above the position you stuck on the double-sided tape.

Press on the neck part of the strain gauge unit. For the right sensor, insert the junction box into the sensor guide. For the left
sensor, insert the transmitter into the sensor guide.

Be careful that you do not force or pull too hard on the junction cable on the right sensor.
If the strain gauge unit comes off, lightly shape the neck of the strain gauge unit so it ts the sensor guide, and start over from step 1.

Remove all the non-adhesive backing paper from the sensors.
While pressing on the neck of the strain gauge unit, use tweezers to remove the clear non-adhesive backing paper from the
strain gauge unit.
Use tweezers to remove the white non-adhesive backing paper from the right-side junction box and the left-side transmitter.
Be careful that the strain gauge unit does not come off of the sensor guide. If it does come off, put the non-adhesive backing
paper back on, and repeat the procedure from step 1.

Applying the Adhesive
Apply the adhesive for the sensor to the strain gauge unit.
This work should be done indoors in an ambient temperature of 20 to 35°C.
The adhesive starts to harden after 20 minutes. You must apply the adhesive and nish the bonding process within 20 minutes of
dispensing the adhesive.
Refer to the adhesive’s documentation regarding how to use it.

Use needle nose pliers to grab the cap, rotate the cap 90 degrees and then pull it off.
When replacing the cap, conrm the position of the marks so you can replace it in the same orientation.

Put the tube of adhesive into the caulking gun for the adhesive for the sensors.
Use the caulking gun for the sensor adhesive to squeeze about 3 centimeters of the adhesive onto a rag to make sure it
comes out.
Conrm that the adhesive can be squeezed out, attach the mixing nozzle, and then dispose of the rags.

Squeeze about 3 centimeters of the adhesive onto the palette.
After dispensing the adhesive, immediately remove the mixing nozzle, and replace the cap of the adhesive in its original
orientation.

Apply the adhesive to the left and right strain gauge units in the areas within the dotted lines (diagram
below).
Use the spatula to apply the adhesive within the area indicated by the dotted line, being careful to stay within the dotted
lines. (There is no problem if the adhesive goes outside the area surrounded by the gray line.) Do not apply any adhesive to
the shaded areas.
Apply enough adhesive so that it is slightly rounded on top.
Pressure Bonding the Sensors
This section describes how to pressure bond the sensors to the left and right cranks.
The adhesive for the sensors starts to harden after 20 minutes. You must apply the adhesive and nish the bonding process within 20
minutes of dispensing the adhesive.

Insert the left crank into the sensor guide and strongly press it in.

Use your ngers to press down on the strain gauge unit’s perimeter (diagram below) and the left-side
transmitter.

Remove the left sensor guide and the boss for the left crank from the guide base.

Insert the right sensor guide into the guide base.
See page 12 for the procedure.
Be careful that the double-sided tape on the strain gauge unit does not touch the adhesive.

Insert the right crank into the sensor guide and strongly press it in.

Slowly extract the right crank from the guide base.

Remove the right sensor guide from the guide base.

Insert the right and left cranks into the pressure bonding tool you procured as noted in “Setting up the
pressure bonding tool” (page 9).
Align the end of the pressure bonding tool and the line on top of the strain gauge unit, as shown in the diagram.

Turn the knob on the pressure bonding tool clockwise.
The sensor is being pressure bonded at the specied pressure when the knob becomes loose. Stop turning the knob when
it becomes loose.

Keep the pressure bonding tools clamped in place and do not disturb them for at least 12 hours, until
the adhesive hardens.
Maintain an ambient temperature of 20 to 35°C while the adhesive is hardening.
Do not touch the cranks while the adhesive is hardening.
If you do move the pressure bonding tool, be careful to not touch the crank while you loosen the clamps and remove the pressure
bonding tool from the table.

After 12 hours has elapsed, turn the knob on the pressure bonding tool counterclockwise and remove
the crank.
Before putting away the pressure bonding tool, turn the knob clockwise until it is loose, so the spring is extended and will not become
weak.
