Linux Information Update
Avoiding Irrecoverable Processor Errors During X Window Startup
Dell has determined that using the X Window System on your system can result in an irrecoverable
processor error (IERR) and system halt. Dell is working with the Linux community and Linux
vendors to resolve this issue.
To avoid possible IERRs during X Window System startup, perform the following steps:
1
Edit the XFree86 configuration file
/etc/X11/XF86Config
and search for
"ServerFlags"
.
If the ServerFlags section
does not exist
, add the following lines to the configuration file:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "PciOsConfig" "1"
EndSection
If the ServerFlags section
does exist
, add the following line to that section:
Option "PciOsConfig" "1"
2
Search for
"Device"
and, within the Device section, add the following option line:
Option "NoINT10"
These changes prevent a race condition with the kernel when the X Window System accesses the
PCI Configuration registers.
Issue Running the X Window System on the Dell PowerEdge 6800 and 6850
Due to the increased number of available PCI devices on the Dell™ PowerEdge™ 6800 and 6850,
the X Window system may not start successfully with the default settings chosen by the Red Hat
®
installer. To resolve this issue, either change the
Driver
setting in
/etc/X11/XF86Config
from
radeon
to
vesa
, or update
XFree86
to
4.3.0-69
or later through the Red Hat Network.
