This manual is considered to be part of the warmer and is to be given to the owner
or manager of the restaurant, or to the person responsible for training operators of
the warmer.
THIS MANUAL MUST BE READ AND UNDERSTOOD BY ALL PERSONS USING
OR INSTALLING THIS WARMER.
All FM-1 Warmers manufactured by WELLS MFG. CO. for JACK IN THE BOX are warranted against defects in
materials and workmanship for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of shipment from our factory, and is for
the benefit of the original purchaser only.
THIS WARRANTY IS THE COMPLETE AND ONLY WARRANTY, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED IN LAW OR IN
FACT, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY
PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND/OR FOR DIRECT, INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES IN CON-
NECTION WITH THIS PRODUCT. This warranty is void if it is determined that, upon inspection by an autho-
rized service agency, the equipment has been modified, misused, misapplied, improperly installed, or damaged in
transit or by fire, flood or act of God. It also does not apply if the serial nameplate has been removed, or if
service is performed by unauthorized personnel. The prices charged by Wells Mfg. Co. for its products are
based upon the limitations in this warranty. Seller’s obligation under this warranty is limited to the repair of
defects without charge by a Wells Mfg. Co. factory authorized service agency or one of its sub-service
agencies. FM-1 warmers must be taken or shipped to the closest authorized service agency, transportation
charges prepaid, for service. In addition to restrictions contained in this warranty, specific limitations are shown in
the Service Policy and Procedure Guide. Wells Mfg. Co. authorized service agencies are located in principal
cities. This warranty is valid in the United States and Canada and void elsewhere. Please consult your classified
telephone directory, your foodservice equipment dealer or write the Factory Service Department, Wells Manufac-

LIMITED WARRANTY STATEMENT
for Model FM-1 WARMERS
SERVICE POLICY AND PROCEDURE GUIDE
ADDITIONAL WARRANTY EXCLUSIONS
1. Resetting of circuit breakers is not covered by this warranty unless warranted conditions are the cause.
2. All problems due to operation at voltages or phase other than specified on equipment nameplates
are not covered by this warranty.
3. All problems due to electrical connections not made in accordance with electrical code requirements
and wiring diagrams supplied with the equipment are not covered by this warranty.
4. Replacement of items subject to normal wear and performance of normal maintenance functions
including adjustments of thermostats, are not covered by warranty.
5. Damage to electrical cords and plugs caused by exposure to excessive heat is not covered by this warranty.
6. Damage to the control section due to immersion in water or other liquids is not covered by this waranty.
7. Cleaning and de-liming are customer responsibility. Damage to the unit due to failure to adequately
care for the unit is not covered by this warranty. Complete use and care instructionsare included in this
manual. Proper attention to preventatve maintenance and scheduled maintenance procedures will prolong the
life of the machine.
8. All labor shall be performed during regular working hours. Overtime premium will be charged to the buyer.
9. All genuine Wells replacement parts are warranted for ninety (90) days from date of purchase on non-
warranty equipment. This parts warranty is limited only to replacement of the defective part(s). Any use
of non-genuine Wells parts completely voids any warranty.
10. Installation, labor, and job check-outs are not considered warranty and are thus not covered by this
warranty.
11. Charges incurred by delays, waiting time or operating restrictions that hinder the service technician’s
ability to perform service are not covered by warranty. This includes institutional and correctional facilities.

SAFETY PROCEDURES
Knowledge of proper procedures is essential to the safe operation of electrically energized
equipment. In accordance with generally accepted product safety labeling guidelines for
potential hazards, the following signal words and symbols are used throughout this manual.
DANGER
WARNING - Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard which can cause
personal injury and possibly death, or major property damage, in the event the state-
ment is ignored.
CAUTION - Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard which will or can
cause minor personal injury, or property damage in the event the statement is ignored.
NOTE - Note is used to notify personnel of installation, operation or maintenance informa-
tion which is important, but not hazard related.
DANGER - Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard which will
cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage in the
event the statement is ignored.
WARMER PRECAUTIONS AND GENERAL INFORMATION
1. This patty staging warmer is intended for use to hold cooked food product at temperature for human
consumption. No other use is recommended or authorized by the manufacturer or its agents.
2. Patty staging warmers are intended for use in commercial establishments, where all operators are
familiar with the appliance use, limitations and associated hazards. Operating instructions and
warnings must be read and understood by all operators and users.
3. Do not submerge control box in water. Do not splash or pour water onto controls, control box or
wiring.
4. Unplug warmer or disconnect from electrical power before performing any service or maintenance.
5. Any parts replacement, maintenance procedure or servicing procedure requiring the use of tools
must be performed by an Authorized Service Agency.
6. Any troubleshooting guides, component views, parts lists or installation guides provided with this
equipment are intended for the use of qualified technical personal only.
7. Except where otherwise noted, this piece of equipment is made in the USA and has American sizes on
hardware.
8. This manual should be considered a permanant part of this appliance. This manual and all
supplied instructions, diagrams, schematics, parts break downs, notices and labels must remain
with the appliance if it is sold or moved to another location.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
A. UNPACKING AND INSPECTION
1. Carefully remove the WARMER from the carton. Remove all protective plastic film, packaging
materials and accessories from the WARMER before connecting electrical power or otherwise
performing any installation procedures.
NOTE: DO NOT discard the CARTON and other PACKAGING MATERIAL until you have
inspected the warmer for hidden damage and tested it for PROPER OPERATION.
2. Read all instructions in this manual carefully before starting installation of this warmer. READ
AND UNDERSTAND ALL LABELS AND DIAGRAMS ATTACHED TO THE WARMER.
3. Carefully account for all components and accessories before discarding packing materials.
Store the accessories in a convenient place for later use:
B. SET-UP
1. Setup the warmer only on a firm, level surface. Non-combustible material (e.g. metal, terrazzo) is
recommended.
2. Maintain clearances between the appliance and adjacent combustible surfaces. Avoid storing
combustible or flammable materials near the appliance.
3. Adjustable legs are provided on optional countertop cabinet. The legs must be properly installed
and the warmer leveled
.
C. PLUMBING HOOK-UP
1. The drain valve must be hooked up to an appropriate drain. The drain valve is 3/8” NPT Female
pipe thread.
2. Drain line installation must conform to all national and local codes and ordinances.

SHIPPING DAMAGE CLAIM PROCEDURE
NOTE: For your protection, please note that equipment in this shipment was carefully inspected and
packaged by skilled personnel before leaving the factory. Upon acceptance of this shipment, the
transportation company assumes full responsibility for its safe delivery.
IF SHIPMENT ARRIVES DAMAGED:
1. VISIBLE LOSS OR DAMAGE: Be certain that any visible loss or damage is noted on
the freight bill or express receipt, and that the note of loss or damage is signed by the
delivery person.
2. FILE CLAIM FOR DAMAGE IMMEDIATELY: Regardless of the extent of the damage.
3. CONCEALED LOSS OR DAMAGE: if damage is unnoticed until the merchandise is
unpacked, notify the transportation company or carrier immediately, and file
“CONCEALED DAMAGE” claim with them. This should be done within fifteen(15) days
from the date the delivery was made to you. Be sure to retain the container for inspection.
Wells Manufacturing cannot assume liability for damage or loss incurred in transit. We will, however,
at your request, supply you with the necessary documents to support your claim.
D. ELECTRICAL HOOK-UP
CAUTION - Electrical Shock Hazard
The ground prong of the electrical cord is part of a system designed to protect you
from electrical shock in the event of internal damage to the warmer.
NEVER CUT OFF THE GROUND PRONG (large rounded prong on 120V)
NEVER TWIST AN ELECTRICAL PRONG TO FIT AN EXISTING RECEPTACLE.
Install an electrical circuit and/or receptacle appropriate to
the voltage/amperage requirements of the appliance.
1. Refer to the nameplate. Verify the electrical service power. Voltage and phase must
match the nameplate specifications. Plugging the warmer into the wrong voltage can severely
damage the unit or cause noticeably decreased performance.
IMPORTANT: Damage due to being plugged into wrong voltage is NOT covered by warranty.
2. Your warmer is equipped with a grounded electrical cord. This cord must be plugged into a
matching, properly grounded electrical receptacle.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
A. WET OPERATION PRECAUTIONS
1. Carefully read the description of the warmer operation on the specification sheet.
2. This warmer is designed for for WET operation ONLY. Verify that the drain valve is
CLOSED, then add 3” - 3½” of hot tap water to the warmer pan BEFORE turning the
warmer ON. Use of hot water will allow a faster preheat.
a. Check the water level frequently and add water as necessary to prevent the warmer
from running dry.
b. If the warmer runs dry, turn it OFF and allow to cool to room temperature before
adding water.
NOTE: Damage caused by adding water to a dry warmer when hot is NOT covered by
warranty. Damage caused by allowing warmer to run dry is NOT covered by warranty.
B. PRE-HEATING THE WARMER
1. Place screens into warmer.
2. Turn power switch to ON. Allow warmer to preheat for approximately 30 minutes. Warmer
is ready to use when a moderate amount of steam is being produced.
C. OPERATION
1. Place patties directly onto warmer screens. Refer to individual Restaurant Procedures for
using the numerical feature of the screen sections.
2. Check the water frequently by lifting the fill door and observing the water level. Add water to
the warmer pan as needed.
D. CLOSING
1. At restaurant close, turn the power switch to OFF. Allow the warmer to cool for at least 30
minutes. Open the drain valve and drain all water from the warmer pan.
2. Perform appropriate scheduled service as described in CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS, page 7.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE CARD
FM-1 PATTY STAGING WARMER
DAILY CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
PRECAUTIONS: Turn warmer OFF and unplug. Allow to cool.
FREQUENCY: Daily
TOOLS: Jack in the Box approved detergent, non-abrasive scouring pads, plastic
scraper, warm water, soft clean cloth.
1. Turn warmer OFF and unplug . Allow to cool. Drain water from warmer pan.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT drape cord over ovens, griddles, flue vents or other hot
objects. Damage to the cord and / or plug will result.
2. Remove screens from warmer pan. Clean with warm water and mild detergent. Use
plastic scraper and / or non-abrasive scouring pads to remove any baked-on food
particles. Allow to air dry.
3. Remove control box / element assembly from warmer pan. Wipe thermostat sensing
bulb and heating element clean using a soft clean cloth.
IMPORTANT: Use care to avoid damaging the thermostat sensing bulb, attached
capillary tube or mounting clips.
4. Wipe the control box, power cord and plug with a soft cloth dampened in warm water and
mild detergent. Rinse by wiping with a soft clean cloth dampened in clear water.
IMPORTANT: Do not submerge control box, power cord or plug.
Do not splash water on control box.
5. Wipe interior surfaces of warmer pan with a soft cloth dampened in warm water and
mild detergent. Rinse by wiping with a soft clean cloth dampened in clear water.
6. Wipe exterior of cabinet with a soft cloth dampened in warm water and mild detergent.
Rinse by wiping with a soft clean cloth dampened in clear water.
7. Reinstall control box / heating element, and screens. Verify that screens are installed
in proper order.
8. Close drain valve and add 3” - 3½” of fresh water to the warmer pan.
9. Plug unit back into the appropriate receptacle. DO NOT turn unit back on until ready for
operation.

objects. Damage to the cord and / or plug will result.
2. Remove screens and control box / element assembly from warmer pan.
CAUTION - CHEMICAL BURN HAZARD
Read and follow all manufacturer’s directions on de-liming compound.
Always wear protective gloves and goggles when performing de-liming.
3. Fill warmer pan with clean water. Add de-liming compound per manufacturer’s instructions.
Reinstall control box / element assembly. Allow de-liming solution to soak components
as directed by manufacrurer.
4. At conclusion of soak period, drain de-liming compound and dispose of as required by
local regulations.
5. Remove scale and mineral build-up from warmer pan and heating elements using plastic
scraper, non-abrasive scouring pads and / or stiff bristle brush as necessary.
IMPORTANT: Use care to avoid damaging the thermostat sensing bulb, attached
capillary tube or mounting clips.
6. Thoroughly rinse warmer pan and heating elements in clean water.
IMPORTANT: Do not submerge control box, power cord or plug.
Do not splash water on control box.
7. Perform daily cleaning as detailed in PM 951.1.

B. TEMPERATURE CHECK
Check temperature by placing the probe of a
thermometer near, but not touching, the bulb
of the thermostat sensor. Turn the 5 - 6 screen
backwards and test through the fill door.
Temperature reading should be approximately
212ºF, or the local boiling temperature. Warmer
should produce a moderate amount of steam.
Thermostat set temperature is fixed and cannot be safely adjusted. Thermostat-related problems
require that the thermostat unit be replaced.

C. SERVICE KIT #502502 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Make certain that power cord is unplugged from power source.
2. Remove rear cover and any gasket material attached to flange of control box.
Salvage nameplate for attachment to new back cover.
3. THERMOSTAT: Remove thermostat mounting screws from front of control box, and capillary tube
nut from bottom of control box. Remove clamps holding thermostat bulb to element. Remove old
thermostat and existing wires 4 and 5. Discard old thermostat, clamps, rings and wires.
4. SWITCH: Remove switch seal and drop switch out of unit. Remove wires 1, 2, 8 & 9 from wire nuts.
Discard switch, seal, wires and wire nuts.
5. IF POWER CORD (not included in kit) IS TO BE REPLACED: Disconnect wire 3. Disconnect
ground wire from control box. Remove strain relief. Discard cord, strain relief, wire and wire nut.
IF ELEMENT (not included in kit) IS TO BE REPLACED: Disconnect and discard element.
6. Wipe interior of control box with a clean cloth to remove any moisture and/or grease. On boxes
without welded corners, reseal interior corners of control box with silicone sealant.
7. IF REQUIRED, REPLACE HEATING ELEMENT AND/OR POWER CORD AT THIS TIME.
a. Seal around element fittings and/or power cord strain relief prior to tightening.
b. Slide shrink tubing over terminal of new wire 3. Securely attach wire 3 to element; slide
shrink tubing over the terminal and shrink using a suitable heat source.
8. Install new thermostat assembly into control box per drawing #502560.
a. Apply silicone sealant to screw holes and capillary tube fittings before mounting thermostat.
Route capillary tube in front of support.
b. Attach thermostat bulb to element and tighten clamps. NOTE: Both stainless steel rings
must be on thermostat bulb, between the clamps, before tightening element clamps.
c. Slide shrink tubing over terminal of wire 5. Securely attach wire 5 to element; slide tubing
over the terminal and shrink using a suitable heat source. Refer to wiring diagram #301628
9. Route wires 1 & 2 behind support. Apply silicone sealant to top of switch and insert switch into
control box. Install switch plate and switch seal.
10. Connect switch wires 1 & 2 to power cord lead L1 with a wire nut.
Connect switch wires 4 & 8 to thermostat wire 8 with a wire nut.
Connect element wire 3 to power cord lead L2 with a wire nut
Connect power cord lead to control box stud.
11. The new embossed back cover must be used after installing a new thermostat.
Transfer existing nameplate to new embossed cover.
Seal heads of rivets with silicone sealant. Attach back cover to control box using silicone sealant in
place of any gasket material.
12. Test unit for operation of switch, element, thermostat and, when present, pilot light.
