INTRODUCTION
Thefollowingsectioncovemtheunpackingandinstallationofyourprinter,
togetherwithinformationonpaperloadingandhandling(bothcontinuous
andcut-sheetpaper).
LOCATINGTHE PRINTER
Beforeyoustartunpackingandsettingupyourprinter,makesurethatyou
havea suitableplaceonwhichtolocateit.By“asuitableplace”,wemean:

Settingup
Placeyourprinterinthepositionwhereitisgoingto bepermanentlysited,
and removeall packingmaterialfrom insidethe top cover.This packing
materialisintendedtopnwentdamagetotheprinterintransit.Youmaylike
to keep thispackingwiththeprintercartonif youintendtranspofiingthe
printerforuse at a differentlocation.
The platen knob shouldbe removedfrom the accessorybox inside the
s~pping carton.Mounttheplatenknobontheshaftontheright-handside
oftheprinter.Turntheknobontheshaftbeforepushingtheknobfullyinto
position.
NOTE
I Beforeturningtheplatenknob,alwaysensurethatthepowertotheprinter ~
is OFF.

On a PCor PC/AT-typecomputer,thismeansthat youusethe25-wayD-
typeconnectoratthecomputerend,andtheAmphenol-type36-wayconnec-
tor at the printerend.The pinoutsof theprinter’scomector m givenin
Chapter8 if youneeda cableforconnectionto anothercomputer.
Plugtheprinterintoasuitablemainsoutlet.However,DONOTturnonthe
powerswitchatthebackof theprinteryet.

You mayneedto set someDIP switchesinsidetheprinterbeforeyou start
usingit.TheseswitchesenableyoutoconfigwetheprinterasanEpsonor
asan IBMProprinterprinter.TheDIPswitchesalsoenableyouto selecta
characterset other than the USA characterset, if your supplierhas not
alreadysettheseup foryou.TheDIPswitchcoverislocatedinsidethetop
cover(seebelow).Usetheendofapaper-clip(orsimilar)tosettheswitches.

abilityto settheseswitches,contactyoursupplier.

LOADINGPAPER
The
followingsectionsexplainhowtoloadpaper- single-sheet(cut-sheet),
withoutthe AutomaticSheetfeeder,andalsotheoperationsnecessaryfor
loadingcontinuous(fanfold)stationery.
Ifyoutm usingtheAutomaticSheetFeeder,pleaserefertotheinstructions
suppliedwiththeAutomaticSheetFeederunit.

Placethepaperguideinposition,locatingthelugsonthebottomof the
assemblyintotheslotson theprinterbody.
Makesurethatthereleaseleverispushedtowardsthebackoftheprinter
(~ position).
Adjustthepaperguidestomatchthesizeofpaperyouwillbeusing(re-
memberingthatprintingwillstartsomedistancefmmtheleft-handedge
of the carnage).Thereare markingsmoldedintothe backplateof the
assemblytohelpyouifyouwishtocenterthepaper.Ifyouarecentering
thepaperusingthemarkingsmoldedintothepaperguide,rememberthat
printingwillstartfromtheleft-handedge,unlessyouresettheleft and
rightmarginsusingsoftwmvcommands.
Placethepaperbetweentheguides,placingthesideon whichyouwant
toprinttowardsthebackoftheprinter.Gentlypushthepaperdowninthe
guidesuntilyoufeelit stop.

Turnonthepowerusingtheswitchatthebackoftheprinter.Theprinter
wilibeep,indicatingthatnopaperisinpositionforprinting.Theorange
PAPERindicatoralsoshowsthis.
Nowpmssthe (SE’’WT’PARK:button.ThepaperbailWillmoveclearofthepaper,
andhe paperwillbe fed and adjust&1pastthe printheadto aposition
readyforprinting.Thepaperbailwillbe movedbackto gripthepaper
againsttheplaten,andtheprintheadwillmoveto thestartposition.
Theactualverticalpositionofthepaperafterauto-loadingisdeterminedby
theMemorySwitchsetting(see Chapter3).
The verticalpositionof thepapercan be finelyadjustedby meansof the
microfeedfunction(seeChapter2).
Fanfoldpaper (continuous)stationery
Ifyouaregoingtousefanfold(continuous)paper,thenyouwillneedtouse
theintegraltractormechanismassembly,situatedundertherearcoverofthe
printer.
1 Removethetop andrearcoversof theprinterto insertthepaper.

2 Pushthereleaselevertowardsthefrontoftheprinter(tothe~ position).
This has the effect of releasingthe paper from the platen roller, and
engagingthetractorfeed.
3 With the sprocketcovers open, tluvad the paper over the sprockets,
aiigningthesprocketholeswiththepinson thesprockets.
4 Adjustthe spacingofthesprocketsby slidingthemalongthebar,using
the clamp lever at the back of each sprocketto release and lock the
sprocketimposition(whentheleverisup,thesprocketmaybemoved,and
whenit isdown,thesprocketislocked).

5 Nowclosethespmcketcovers,againmakingsurethatthepapersprocket
holesare alignedwiththepinson thesprockets.If theyare notaligned
properly,youwillhaveproblemswithpaperfeeding,possiblyresulting
in tearingandjammingof thepaper.
6 Tumonthe printerusingtheswitchattheback oftheprinter.Theprinter
willbeep(indicatingthatthepaperisnotyetfullyloaded).Thisis also
confirmedbytheorange
PAPERindicator.

7 Nowpnxthe @&@button.Thepaperbailwillmoveclearof thepaper,
andthe paperwillbe fed and adjustedpast the printhead to a position
~ady for printing.Thepaperbailwillbe movedbackto gripthepaper
againsttheplaten,andtheprintheadwillmoveto the startposition.As
whenloadingcut-sheetpaper,theMemorySwitchsettingwilldetermine
the initialpositionof the paperafter auto-feeding,and the micm feed
functionmaybeusedto adjustthepaperposition.
8 Remountthetop coverrearcoverandthetransparentprintercover.

Theprinterwillnowbeon-line(theONLINEindicatorwillbelighted).You
maynowwanttochooseafont,apitchandaprintquality.Thiscanbedone
fromthefrontpanel,butyoumustputtheprinteroff-linefirstby pressing
the.[=~~~-;button.The indicatorwillgo out and the printerwillbeepto
confirmthis.

The firsttwo buttonshavea seriesof indicatorsnextto themwhichshow
whichoptionhasbeencurrentlyselectedusingthem(fontorpitch).Some
oftheseindicatomcanbeeitherorangeorgreen,dependingupontheoptions
cunently selected.
Thereis no indicatorassociatec’withthe

obvious when paper has been inserted), but the

buttonsboth have indicatmxembeddedin the buttons themselves.The

QUIETMODE
To selectQuietmode,theprintermustbeon-line.Whileitison-line,press
the
I.PAPE!FEEDbutton. This will alternatelyilluminateand extinguishthe
QUIETindicator.Whenin Quietmode,theprinterwillprintslightlyslower,
butat a reducednoiselevel.
NOTE
If youpress the
PAPERFEEO?
buttonwhiletheprinteris off-line,the-EEZ
buttonwillperformitsnormalfunction,ieit willfeedpaper.

Paperparking
Paperparkingisusefulifyouareusingfanfoldpaper,andyouwanttoprint
adocumentononeortwosheetsofcut-sheetpaper.Theprinter“parks”the
fanfoldpapersafelyout ofthe way,so thatyoudo notneedto unloadthe
paper before inserting cut-sheet paper, then, when you have finished
printingon cut-sheetpaper,movesthe fanfoldpaperback to its original
positionso thatyoucan restat printing.
To usethisfacility,followtheinstructionsbelow:
