DOUBLE INSULATION
Doubleinsulationisa conceptin safety, in electric
powertoolswhicheliminates the need for the usual
three-wiregroundedpowercord. All exposedmetal
parts are isolatedfrom internalmetal motor
componentswithprotectinginsulation.Double
insulatedtoolsdo not need to be grounded.

STORE IDLE TOOLS. When not in use, tools
shouldbe storedin a dry and high or looked-up

saferat the ratefor whichitwas designed.
USE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small toolor
attachmentto do thejob of a heavy dutytool. Don't
usetoolfor purposenot intended- for example -
Acircularsaw shouldnever be used for cutting
tree limbsor logs.

drawn intonearbyair vents.
ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. Everyday
eyeglasses have only impact-resistantlenses;they
are NOT safety glasses.
PROTECT YOUR LUNGS. Wear a face or dust
mask ifthe operationisdusty.
PROTECT YOUR HEARING. Wear hearing
protectionduringextended periodsof operation.
DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry toolbycordor
yank itto disconnectfrom receptacle. Keep cord
from heat, oil, and sharpedges.
SECURE WORK. Use clampsor a viseto hold
work. It'ssaferthan usingyourhand and itfrees
bothhandsto operate tool.
DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and
balance at all times. Do not use on a ladder or
unstable support. Secure tools when working at
elevated positions.
MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep toolssharp
and clean for best and safest performance. Follow
instructionsfor lubricatingand changingaccesso-
ries.
DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use, before
servicing,orwhen changingattachments,blades,
bits,cutters,etc., all toolsshouldbe disconnected
from powersupply.
REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES.
Formhabitofcheckingto see thatkeys and
adjustingwrenches are removedfrom toolbefore
turningiton.
AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Don'tcarry
plugged-intoolwithfinger on switch.Be sure
switch isoffwhen pluggingin.
MAKE SURE YOUR EXTENSION CORD IS IN
GOOD CONDITION. When usingan extension
cord, be sure to use one heavy enoughto carrythe
currant yourproductwilldraw. An undersizedcord
willcause a drop in linevoltageresultingin lossof
powerand overheating.A wire gage size (A.W.G.)
ofat least 16 isrecommendedfor an extension
cord100 feet or lessin length.A cordexceeding
100 feet isnot recommended. If indoubt, usethe
nextheavier gage. The smallerthe gage number,
the heavierthe cord.
OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS. When tool
is used outdoors,useonlyextensioncordssuitable
for use outdoors.Outdoorapprovedcordsare
markedwith the suffixW-A, for example - SJTW-A
or SJOWoA.
KEEP BITS CLEAN AND SHARP. Sharp bits
minimizestallingand kickback.
KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM DRILLING AREA.
Keep handsaway from bits.Do not reachunder-
neath work whilebit is rotating.Do notattemptto
removematerialwhile bit isrotating.
NEVER USE IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE.
Normalsparkingofthe motorcouldignitefumes.
INSPECT TOOL CORDS PERIODICALLY and if
damaged, have repairedbyan authorizedservice
facility.Stay constantlyaware of cordlocation.
INSPECT EXTENSION CORDS PERIODICALLY
and replace ifdamaged.
KEEP HANDLES DRY, CLEAN, AND FREE
FROM OIL AND GREASE. Always use a clean
cloth when cleaning. Never use brake fluids,
gasoline, petroleum-based products, or any strong
solvents to clean your tool.
STAY ALERT AND EXERCISE CONTROL. Watch
whatyou are doingand use commonsense. Do
not operatetoolwhen youare tired. Do notrush.
CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Beforefurtheruseof
the tool,a guard or other partthat isdamaged
shouldbe carefully checkedto determinethatitwill
operate properlyand performitsintendedfunction.
Check for alignmentof movingparts,bindingof
movingparts, breakage of parts,mountingand any
otherconditionsthat may affect itsoperation,A
guardor other partthat isdamaged shouldbe
properlyrepaired or replacedby an authorized
servicecenter.
DO NOT USE TOOL IF SWITCH DOES NOT
TURN IT ON AND OFF. Have defectiveswitches
replacedby an authorizedservicecenter.
DRILLING iNTO ELECTRICAL WIRING IN
WALLS CAN CAUSE DRILL BIT AND CHUCK
TO BECOME ELECTRICALLY LIVE. Do nottouch
thechuck or metal housingwhendrillingintoa
wall; grasponlythe insulatedhandle(s) provided
on the tool.
INSPECT FOR and removeall nailsfrom lumber
beforedrilling.

DRUGS, ALCOHOL, MEDICATION. Do not

POLARIZED PLUGS. To reduce the riskof electric
shock,thistool hasa polarizedplug (one blade is
widerthan the other). This plugwillfit ina polar-
ized outletonlyone way. Ifthe plug does notfit
fully in theoutlet, reverse the plug. If itstilldoes

during shipping. If any parts are damaged or missing,

replacement parts before attempting to operate drill.

included in the box.

Beforeattemptingto use any tool,familiarizeyourself
with alloperating features and safety requirements.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
Yourdrillhas a precisionbuiltelectricmotor. Itshould
be connectedto a power supply that is 120 volts,
60 Hz, AC only (normal household current). Do not
operate thistoolon directcurrent (DC). A substantial
voltagedropwill causea lossof powerand the motor
willoverheat. If yourdrilldoes notoperate when
plugged intoan outlet, double-checkthe power
supply.
AUXILIARY HANDLE
An auxiliary handle has been packedwithyourdrillfor
ease ofoperationand to helppreventlossofcontrol.

make you careless. Rememberthata careless
fraction ofa secondis sufficientto inflictsevere

Your drillisequippedwith a lock-onfeature, whichis
convenientwhen continuousdrillingfor extended
periodsof timeis required.To lock-on,depressthe
switchtrigger,push in and holdthe lock-on button
locatedon the sideof the handle,then release switch
trigger. Release lock-onbuttonand your drillwill
continuerunning.
To release the lock,depresstheswitchtriggerand
release.
Ifyou havethe lock-on feature engaged during use
and yourdrillbecomes disconnectedfrom power
supply,disengagethe lock-onfeature immediately.
_lb WARNING: Before connecting yourdrillto
power supplysource,always checktobe sure it
is not in lock-onposition(depressand release
switchtrigger). Failureto do socould resultin
accidentalstartingof yourdrillresultingin
possibleserious injury.Also,do notlockthe
triggeronjobs where yourdrillmay need tobe
stoppedsuddenly.

Your electricddllhas thefeature ofbeingreversible.
The directionofchuck rotationis controlledbya lever
locatedabove the switchtrigger.Withyourdrillheldin
normaloperatingposition,the directionof rotationlever
shouldbe positionedto the leftoftheswitchfordrilling.
The drilldirectionis reversedwhen the leveristothe
rightofthe switch.
The designof the switchwill notpermitchangingthe
directionofrotationwhilethe drillisrunning.Release
the switchtriggerand allowthedrilltostop before
changingitsdirection.
Note: Yourdrillwillnot rununlessthe switchlever is
pushedfullytothe leftor right.

An auxiliaryhandle is packed withyour drillforease
of operationand to help preventloss ofcontrol.To
install,startthe screwthreads intothethreaded hole
inthe gear housingand tightensecurely.
Note: Forconvenience,the screwhas been trapped
insidetheauxiliaryhandle.
To preventthread damage and possiblelossof
control,auxiliary handle shouldbe checked pedodi-
canyfortightness.Do not operate ddllwith auxiliary
handle loose.

Hold yourdrill firmly and place the bit at the point to
be drilled.
Depressthe switch trigger to startyourdrill.Do not
lockthe switchon for jobswhere yourdrillmay
need to bestoppedsuddenly.
Move the drillbit intoworkpieceapplyingonly
enough pressure to keep the bitcutting.Do not
force yourdrillor applysidepressureto elongatea
hole. Letyourdrilland bit dothe work.
When drilling hard,smoothsurfacesuse a center
punchto mark desired hole location.This willprevent
the drillbitfrom slippingoffcenter as the holeis
started.
,_ WARNING: Be preparedfor bindingor bit
breakthrough.When these situationsoccur,ddll
has a tendencytograb and kickoppositetothe
directionof rotationand couldcause lossof
controlwhen breakingthroughmaterial Ifnot
prepared, this lossofcontrolcan resultin
possibleserious injury.
When drillingmetals, use a lightoilon the drillbit to
keep itfrom overheating.The oilwillprolongthe life of
the bit and increasethe drillingaction.
If the bitjams inworkpiece or ifthe drillstalls,stopthe
toolimmediately.Remove the bitfrom theworkpiece
and determine the reasonfor jamming.

CHUCKREMOVAL
See Figures9, 10,and 1I.
The chuck mustbe removed inorder to use some
accessories. To remove:
Unplugyourdrill.
_k WARNING: Failureto unplugyourdrillcould
resultinaccidentalstartingcausing serious
injury.
Open chuckjaws. Insert a 5/16 inch or larger hex key
wrench (allen wrench) into the chuck of your drill and
tightenthe chuckjawssecurely.
Tap the hex key wrenchsharplywith a mallet in a
clockwisedirection.See Figure 9. Thiswillloosen
the screwin the chuckfor easy removal.
MALLET
Insert hex key wrench in chuckand tightenchuck
jaws securely.Tap sharplywitha mallet in a
countemlockwisedirection.This willloosenchuck
onthe spindle.It can now be unscrewedbyhand.

Remove the chuckscrew byturningit ina clock-
wise direction.See Figure 10.

TO RETIGHTEN A LOOSE CHUCK
The chuck may become looseon spindleand develop
a wobble.Also, the chuckscrew may become loose
causingthe chuckjaws to bindand preventthemfrom
closing.To tighten,follow these steps:
Unplugyourdrill.
_k WARNING: Failure tounplugyourdrillcould
resultin accidentalstartingcausingserious
injury.
Insert hex key wrenchintochuckand tightenchuck
jaws securely.Tap hex key wrenchsharplywitha
mallet ina clockwisedirection.This willtighten
chuck on the spindle.
Open the chuckjaws and remove hexkey wrench.
Tightenthe chuck screw.
Note: The chuck screwhas lefthandthreads.

GENERAL
Only the parts shownon parts list,page 13, are
intendedto be repairedor replacedby the customer.
Allotherparts representan importantpart ofthe
doubleinsulationsystem and shouldbe servicedonly
by a qualified Sears servicetechnician.
Avoidusing solventswhen cleaningplasticpads.
Most plasticsare susceptibletodamage fromvarious
typesof commercialsolventsand may be damaged
by theiruse. Use clean clothsto remove dirt, carbon
dust,etc.
,_ WARNING: Do not at any time let brake fluids,
gasoline,petroleum-basedproducts,penetrating
oils,etc. come in contactwith plasticparts.They
containchemicalsthat can damage, weaken or
destroyplastic.
It has been foundthat electrictoolsare subjectto
acceleratedwear and possiblepremature failurewhen
theyare used on fiberglassboats,sportscars,
wallboard,spacklingcompounds,or plaster.The
chipsand grindingsfromthese materialsare highly
abrasive to electdctool partssuch as bearings,
brushes,commutators,etc.Consequently, itis not
recommendedthatthistool be usedfor extended
workon anyfiberglassmaterial,wallboard, spackling
compounds,or plaster. Duringany use on these
materialsit isextremely importantthat the toolis
cleanedfrequentlyby blowingwith an air jet.
_, WARNING: Always wear safety gogglesor
safety glasses withside shieldsduring power
tooloperationor when blowingdust. Ifoperation
isdusty,also wear a dustmask.
LUBRICATION
Allof thebearings inthis toolare lubricatedwitha
sufficientamountof highgrade lubricantforthe lifeof
the unitunder normaloperatingconditions.Therefore,
no furtherlubricationis required.
EXTENSION CORDS
The use of any extension cord will cause some loss of
power. To keep the loss to a minimum and to prevent
tool overheating, use an extension cord that is heavy
enough to carry the current the tool will drew.
A wire gage size (A.W.G.) of at least 16 is
recommendedfor an extensioncord tO0 feet or less
in length.When workingoutdoors,use an extension
cord that issuitable for outdooruse. The cord's jacket
will be marked WA.
_k CAUTION: Keep extensioncordsaway from the
ddllingarea and positionthe cordsothat itwill
not getcaught on lumber,tools,etc., dudng
ddllingoperation.
WARNING: Check extensioncordsbeforeeach
use. If damaged, replaceimmediately.Never use
tool with a damaged cordsince touchingthe
damaged area couldcause electrical shock
resultingin seriousinjury.
