DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The PDFC-1A Paddle Fan Speed Control is designed to replace a standard fan
speed control switch. It controls ceiling paddle fans only. There are 3 fan speeds:
low, medium, and high. To change the fan speed move the slider up or down
until it clicks into place. To turn the fan OFF, press the bottom of the paddle. The
Locator LED turns ON. To turn ON the fan press the top of the paddle. The Locator
LED turns OFF. The fan will turn back on to the preset speed.
Caution: Use only with ceiling paddle fans. Do not use this device on a fan/light kit.
Important Notes
1. Only one fan speed control can be used in a 3-way circuit.
2. It is normal for the fan speed control to feel warm to the touch during
operation.
3. Protect the fan speed control from dust and dirt when painting or spackling.
4. Due to varying standards by fan manufacturers, the speeds on this control
may vary on all settings. Some fans may turn too fast on the high setting;
others may turn too slowly on the low setting.
5. Do not use to control a fan and light that can be operated by the same
switch.
6. The fan must have a thermal protection feature.
Derating
No derating is required for multi-gang installations.
INSTALLATION AND WIRING
1. Prior to installation, set fan pull chain to its highest speed (be sure fan is
operating at full speed before disconnecting power).
2. Prepare the switch box
After the power is turned OFF at the circuit breaker box, remove the existing
wall plate and mounting screws. Pull the old switch out from the wall box.
WARNING
Disconnect power to the wall switch box by turning OFF
the circuit breaker or removing the fuse from the circuit before
installing the PDFC-1A, or doing any electrical work.

3. Identify the type of circuit
You may connect the PDFC-1A to a single
pole or multi-way circuit. If you are unable
to clearly identify some or all of the wires
mentioned in this manual, you should consult
with a qualifi ed electrician.
In a 3-way circuit (Fig. 2) two traveler wires connect to both switches. Another
wire provides power from the circuit box to one of the switches. A wire
connects from one switch to the load. A ground wire may also be connected to
a ground terminal on the old switches.
Caution – For your safety: Connecting a proper ground wire to the fan speed
control provides protection against electrical shock in the event of certain
fault conditions. If a proper ground is not available, consult with a qualifi ed
electrician before continuing installation.
4. Prepare the Wires
Tag the wires currently connected to the existing switch
so that they can be identifi ed later. Disconnect the wires.
Make sure the insulation is stripped off of the wires to
expose their copper cores to the length indicated by the
“Strip Gage” in Fig. 3 (approx. ½ inch).

Connect the fan (LOAD) to the appropriate red wire on the fan speed control
(See Fig. 4).
The 2nd red wire is not used for a single pole circuit.

Note: Only one fan speed control can be used on a 3-way/multi-way circuit.
Connect the green or non-insulated (copper) GROUND wire from the circuit
to the green wire on the fan speed control.
Connect the power wire from the circuit (HOT) to the black wire on the fan
speed control.
Connect one of the red wires to either of the remaining wires removed from
the switch.
Connect the remaining red wire to the remaining wire removed from the
switch.
6. Put all the new switches into their wall boxes. Position the fan speed control
with the word “TOP” right side up. Use the captive screws on the mounting
strap to secure the switches to their wall boxes.
7. Attach the cover plates.
8. Set the PDFC-1A to OFF by pressing the bottom of the paddle.
9. Restore power and test. Cycle through the 3 speeds to make sure that the
fan does not stall in any of the ON positions. Do not allow the fan to remain
in a stalled position. DO NOT USE THE PULL CHAIN AFTER THE FAN
SPEED CONTROL IS INSTALLED.
