ABOUT THIS MANUAL

INTRODUCTION

This manual provides essential information about the two-slot HiGain

Retrofit Management (HRM) Shelf. The

HRM-238 List 2 shelf fits into either a 19- or 23-inch Central Office (CO) equipment rack and accomodates up to two

HiGain management units (HMU-319s).

AUDIENCE

This manual is written for people who install and plan the installation of ADC products in a Central Office

environment. If you are an installer, technician, or a local Craft person, this manual contains information you can use

to install the HRM-238 List 2 shelf. It also provides information that can help you plan and make decisions about

your installation.

This manual is also appropriate for managers and planners who are thinking about installing HRM-238 List 2

shelves into a CO or telco-style equipment rack, as well as people interested in the HRM-238 List 2 shelf in general.

This manual is written with the assumption that you are familiar with ADC shelves or equivalent hardware and

cabling, electronic circuitry, and wiring practices.

ORGANIZATION

CONVENTIONS

The following style conventions and terminology are used throughout this guide.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

The following safety guidelines are presented to help you avoid injury to yourself and avoid damage to the

equipment. These guidelines are recommended when working with any equipment that connects to electrical power

or telco wiring.

• Locate the emergency power-off switch for the area in which you are working before beginning any proce-

dures requiring access to the telco-style equipment rack. Then, if an electrical accident occurs, you can

quickly shut off the power.

• Disconnect all power before doing the following:

– Installing or removing the shelf

– Working near power supplies

• Never work alone if potentially hazardous conditions exist.

• Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit; always check.

• Never perform any action that creates a potential hazard to people or makes the equipment unsafe.

• Carefully examine your work area for possible hazards, such as moist floors, ungrounded power extension

cables, and missing safety grounds.

• Keep the work area free of obstructions before, during, and after shelf installation.

• If an electrical accident occurs, proceed as follows:

– Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.

– Turn power off to the telco-style rack that the shelf is located in.

– If possible, send another person to get medical aid. Otherwise, determine the condition of the victim and

then call for help.

– Determine if the victim needs rescue breathing or external cardiac compressions; then take appropriate

action.

• The following precautions may appear in this manual in procedures that, if performed incorrectly, may harm

you or your equipment.

INSPECTING YOUR SHIPMENT

Upon receipt of the equipment:

• Unpack each container and visually inspect the contents for signs of damage. If the equipment has been dam-

aged in transit, immediately report the extent of damage to the transportation company and to ADC. Order

replacement equipment, if necessary.

• Check the packing list to ensure complete and accurate shipment of each listed item. If the shipment is short

or irregular, contact ADC as described in Appendix B: Product Support on page B-1. If you must store the

equipment for a prolonged period, store the equipment in its original container.

DANGER

To prevent electrical shock, be careful when working near HDSL loops and telecommunications

circuits. Coming in contact with high electrical potential can result in death or severe personal

injury.

IMPORTANT

The shelf chassis must be properly grounded to ensure personal and equipment safety.

DANGER

To prevent electrical shock, never install telco equipment in a wet location or during a lightning

storm. When installing or modifying telco lines, disconnect lines on the network side before

working with uninsulated lines or terminals.

DANGER

To prevent electrical shock, be careful when working near power supplies. Telco equipment uses

-48 Vdc office power.

ATTENTION

Electronic components can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Before handling circuit

cards, wear an antistatic discharge wrist strap to prevent damage to electronic components.

Place components in static-shielding protective bags when transporting or storing. When

working on components, always place them on an approved antistatic mat that is electrically

grounded.

OVERVIEW

The HiGain

HRM-238 List 2 is a two-slot HiGain Retrofit Management (HRM) shelf. This shelf fits into either a 19-

or 23-inch Central Office (CO) equipment rack. It accommodates up to two HiGain management units (HMU-319s).

It is used with 220-type, unmanaged 3192-type, and DDM+ type mechanic shelves to manage HiGain line units.

The HRM-238 shelf, with two management units installed, provides remote network management capabilities for up

to 56 HiGain line units (two 3192, two DDM+ or four 220-type shelves). Each HMU-319 management unit in the

HRM-238 shelf can manage up to 28 line units.

The HMU-319 management unit installs horizontally into the 4 ¾-inch slots labeled Slot A or Slot B on the HRM-238

shelf. Each management unit connects to the shelf backplane through a 96-pin DIN connector.

FEATURES

Standard features include:

• 50-pin Amp-type connectors for connection between the management units in the HRM-238 shelf and

previously unmanaged HiGain line units in 220, 3192, or DDM+ mechanics shelves.

• DB-25 and DB-9 connectors for connection to a computer, terminal, modem, or ThinMux

• 10BaseT (RJ-45) and 10Base2 (BNC) LAN connectors for remote network management.

• Screw-type terminals for -48 Vdc power connection and grounding

• Wire-wrap pins to monitor alarm relay activity (46 total, 23 per HMU)

• Operational temperature range -40° C to +65° C

• Easy insertion of the management units using the card guides

• 19-inch or 23-inch rack mount with variable recess

• Compact 1U height design

• NEBS3 Compliant

• UL-60950 Compliant

FRONT AND BACK PANELS

The front panel of the HRM-238 shelf has two management card slots (Slot A and Slot B) and a fan assembly bay.

Slot A and Slot B support HMU-319 HiGain Management Units.

Figure 1-1 shows the front panel of the HRM-238 with two HMU-319 management units.

Figure 1-2 shows the location for each connector on the HRM-238 shelf backplane. Table 1-1 lists the shelf

connector types and management functions available to the HMU-319 management units through those connectors.

OPERATIONAL CAPABILITIES

Application

With two HMU-319 management units installed, the HRM-238 shelf provides network management for up to 56

HiGain line units.

Recommended Network Setup for 220-Type Shelves

The configuration shown in Figure 1-3 is the recommended setup for 220-type mechanics shelves. Up to four

220-type shelves can be managed with one HRM-238 shelf. Position the HRM-238 shelf between the 220-type

shelves, with up to two 220-type shelves above and two below. This limits the distance for the wire leads between

the connectors for the management units and the line units they manage. Figure 1-3 shows the HRM-238 shelf from

the rear view with the A-side connectors on the right and the B-side connectors on the left. The leads from the

HRM-238 shelf connector attach to the Network Management Agent (NMA) pins on the rear of the 220-type

mechanics shelves for each line unit managed. The NMA pin on a 220-type chassis is pin 46.

and the B-side connectors on the left. The leads from the HRM-238 shelf connector attach to the Network

Management Agent (NMA) pins on the rear of the 3192-type mechanics shelves for each line unit managed. The

NMA pin on the 3192-type chassis is pin 7.

Recommended Network Setup for DDM+ Type Shelves

The configuration shown in Figure 1-5 is the recommended setup for DDM+ type mechanics shelves. Up to two

DDM+ type shelves can be managed with one HRM-238 shelf. Position the HRM-238 shelf below the DDM+ type

shelves. This limits the distance for the wire leads between the connectors for the management units and the line

units they manage. Figure 1-5 shows the HRM-238 shelf from the rear view with the A-side connectors on the right

and the B-side connectors on the left. The leads from the HRM-238 shelf connector attach to the Network

Management Agent (NMA) pins on the rear of the DDM+ type mechanics shelves for each line unit managed. The

NMA pin on DDM+ type chassis is pin 104.

INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

• Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature - If installed in a Closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating

ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Therefore, consideration

should be given to installing the equipment in an environment compatible with the manufacturer's maximum

rated ambient temperature (Tmra).

• Reduced Air Flow - Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of airflow required

for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.

• Mechanical Loading - Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous condition is not

achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.

• Circuit Overloading - Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit

and the effect that overloading of circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Appropriate

consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used when addressing this concern.

• Reliable Earthing - Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular attention

should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g., use of power

strips).

MOUNTING THE HRM-238 SHELF

The HRM-238 List 2 shelf installs in EIA or WECO 23-inch or 19-inch CO equipment racks. To install the shelf,

perform the following steps.

Step Action

Position a mounting bracket on each side of the HRM-238 shelf and secure with two 4-32 x

screws.

2 Align the HRM-238 shelf mounting brackets with the vertical mounting holes on the CO rack (Figure 2-1).

3 Install the mounting hardware and secure.

Note: The HRM-238 shelf comes with mounting brackets and hardware for installing the shelf in

a 19-inch or a 23-inch rack.
