SI-AES4 and SO-AES4 are not user installable. Installation must be carried out by an authorized Roland Service
Technician.
After installing the SI-AES4 or SO-AES4, please be sure to return this document to the
purchaser.
To use the SI-AES4 or SO-AES4, the firmware for every S-4000S or S-4000H device in the
system must be at version 1.500 or later. For information on how to update the firmware,
refer to the Service Notes issued by Roland.
002a
Do not open or perform any internal modifications on the unit.
022c
Before installing the SI-AES4 or SO-AES4, you must first always turn off the S-4000S and
unplug its power cord.
115b
Install the circuit board only into the specified S-4000S. Remove only the specified screws
during the installation.
118b
Keep the included ferrite cores in a safe place out of children's reach, so there is no chance of
them being swallowed accidentally.
901
To avoid the risk of damage to internal components that can be caused by static electricity,
please carefully observe the following whenever you handle the board.
Before you touch the board, always first grasp a metal object (such as a water pipe), so
you are sure that any static electricity you might have been carrying has been
discharged.
When handling the board, grasp it only by its edges. Avoid touching any of the
electronic components.
912
Never use excessive force when installing a circuit board. If it doesn’t fit properly on the
first attempt, remove the board and try again.
913
When the SI-AES4 or SO-AES4 installation is complete, double-check your work Please refer
to the Service Notes
issued by Roland
.
Use a Philips screwdriver of the appropriate size to avoid damaging the screw heads (use a
number 2 screwdriver).
Never leave a slot open. Cover any unused slots with optional S-BP blank panels.
Be careful not to cut your hand on the edge of the circuit board or the opening edge.

1
Remove the two screws from each module (SI-AES4 or SO-AES4) installed in
the S-4000S.
2
Extract the module from the S-4000S.
1
Load the modules (SI-AES4 or SO-AES4) into the S-4000S.
2
Align the module's circuit board with the slot in the S-4000S, and insert
slowly.
3
Press in the module firmly until you feel resistance.
4
Secure the module in place using the two screws removed when detaching
the module.

Installing an SI-AES4/SO-AES4
The module shown in the
figure is the SI-AES4. The
removal procedures for the
SI-AES4 and SO-AES4 are the
same.
Extraction of the SI-AES4 or
SO-AES4 may be
accomplished more easily by
inserting an XLR plug into a
connector on the module, then
pulling out the module while
gripping the plug.
Refer to the Service Notes issued by Roland and perform the operational checks
necessary to ensure that each module has been installed correctly.
When installing the SI-AES4
modules, start from the space
on your left as you face the
S-4000S, and install them in
order, moving toward the
right.

SI-AES4 / SO-AES4 Installation Manual
The rules for installing modules (SI-AES4/SO-AES4) are as follows.
Be sure to follow these rules when doing an installation.
The modules installed in a Slave or Split device need to be the opposite
I/O “sex” of the modules in the Master device.
Module Installation Rules
= Input Module
(SI-AES4/SI-AD4)
= Output Module
(SO-AES4/SO-DA4)
It is OK to mix analog with
digital modules as long as they
are of the same I/O type.
On a Slave or Split device,
leaving slots 1 and 2 empty
poses no problem.

Modules of a different Input or Output type
cannot be installed in even-numbered slots first.
Installation must start from an odd-numbered slot.
Group together modules that are
the same Input or Output type.
On a device for which the
REAC mode is Master,
be sure to install modules
in slots 1 and 2.
Never leave slots 1 and 2
on a Master device empty.

No audio is transmitted to empty slots.
The audio input into the Master device is transmitted to the modules
on the connected device (a Slave or Split device).
No audio can be transmitted when the modules installed on the connected device
(a Slave or Split device) are the same I/O type as the modules in the Master device.
Signals can be transmitted from a Slave device to the Master device.
However, transmission from a Split device to the Master device
is not possible.
