About RoHS
In 2003, the European Union (EU) issued Directive 2002/95/EC on the Restriction of (the
use of certain) Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment.
The RoHS directive requires producers of electrical and electronic equipment to reduce
to acceptable levels the presence of six environmentally sensitive substances: lead,
mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and
polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) flame retardants, in certain electrical and
electronic products sold in the EU beginning July 1, 2006.
VersaLogic Corp. is committed to supporting customers with high-quality products and
services meeting the EU’s RoHS directive.
Warnings
Electrostatic Discharge
Warning! Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage circuit boards, disk drives, and other
components. The circuit board must only be handled at an ESD workstation. If an
approved station is not available, some measure of protection can be provided by
wearing a grounded antistatic wrist strap. Keep all plastic away from the board,
and do not slide the board over any surface.
After removing the board from its protective wrapper, place the board on a
grounded, static-free surface, component side up. Use an antistatic foam pad if
available.
The board should be protected inside a closed metallic antistatic envelope during
shipment or storage.
NOTE: The exterior coating on some metallic antistatic bags is sufficiently conductive to cause
excessive battery drain if the bag comes in contact with the bottom side of the board.
Handling Care
Warning! Care must be taken when handling the board not to touch the exposed circuitry
with your fingers.
Introduction
VL-EPM-E9E Hardware Reference Manual 4
Earth Ground Requirement
Warning! All mounting holes should be connected to earth ground (chassis ground). This
supplies proper grounding for ESD and EMI purposes. In portable applications,
the mounting holes should be connected to the ground reference of the system
power supply.
Power Delivery
Power Source Selection
VL-EPM-E9E can use +12V or +5V power inputs from the 3-Bank connector and is
selectable via the V1 jumper.

PCIe Considerations
At 10G bits per second, per port is the maximum theoretical bandwidth. Typical best
performance occurs one-way, at about 9300Mbps. Bidirectional performance drops to
9300 Mbps one-way, and about 4650 Mbps the other way. Achieving this level of
performance requires all use of all four PCIe lanes of Link 2 and Gen 3 PCIe speed. Gen
2 PCIe and/or x2/x1 bifurcation will limit performance.

Configuration and Setup
Initial Configuration
The following components are recommended for a typical development system:
VL-EPM-E9E
Host computer (recommend EPMe-51 Sabertooth)
o PCIe-104, 3-Bank stack-down interface
o x4 or greater PCIe lane width (PEG lanes)
o 3-Bank powered by +5V or +12V DC
o +5V standby power is optional and will be used if available
10G Base-T RJ45 Ethernet cables
Operating System with Intel X710-AT2 drivers
Basic Setup
This section outlines the procedure for setting up a typical development system.
1. Handle the board at an ESD workstation or while wearing a grounded antistatic
wrist strap.
2. Unpack the product and accessories.
a. Verify that you received all the items you ordered.
b. Inspect the system visually for any damage that may have occurred in
shipping. Contact Support@VersaLogic.com at once if any items are
damaged or missing.
c. Gather all the peripheral devices you plan to attach to the board and their
interface and power cables.
3. Review the power supply options and make sure you have chosen the correct
setup for your stack application (See Appendix A in the EPMe-51 Hardware
reference Manual).
4. We recommend attaching standoffs to the boards to stabilize them and make
them easier to work with.
5. Attach Cables and Peripherals.
2
Configuration and Setup
VL-EPM-E9E Hardware Reference Manual 9
6. Attach Power.
7. Review Configuration.
8. Before you power up the system, double-check all the connections.
NOTE: Make sure all cables are oriented correctly and that adequate power will be supplied to
the board and peripheral devices.
9. Turn on the 3-Bank power supply (if using and separate), and the display
monitor.
10. Turn on the CPU power supply. If the system is correctly configured, as the
computer boots a video signal should soon be present.
NOTE: THIS ORDER MAY BE DIFFERENT ON NON-VERSALOGIC CPU BOARDS.
NOTE: For Power Off, reverse the sequence.
11. Select a Boot Drive
12. During startup, press <CTRL> <B> to display the boot menu. Select the boot
device.
13. Install Operating System
a. Install the operating system according to the instructions provided by the
Operating System manufacturer.
The VL-EPM-E9E with VL-EPMe-51xx Sabertooth
Sabertooth has 16 PCIe lanes in its PCIe/PEG interface. These lanes can be allocated
to PCIe Slots according to BIOS setting:
1x16, 2x8, 1x8+2x4 slot width options
The VL-EPM-E9E occupies 1, x8 slot, due to 3-Bank bifurcation limitations
If used in a 12V only configuration, set options to monitor 3.3V and 5V to “Not Required”
