SAFETY WARNINGS
LASER RADIATION
NEVER USE ANY OPTICAL INSTRUMENT TO VIEW THE OUTPUT OF THE LASER
TRANSMITTER. “OPTICAL INSTRUMENT” INCLUDES MAGNIFYING GLASSES, OPTI-
CAL FIBER SCOPES, ETC.
NEVER LOOK INTO THE OUTPUT OF THE LASER TRANSMITTER
NEVER LOOK INTO THE OUTPUT OF A FIBER CONNECTED TO A LASER TRANSMIT-
TER.
NEVER LOOK INTO OR USE ANY OPTICAL INSTRUMENT TO VIEW THE DISTANT
END OF A FIBER THAT MAY BE CONNECTED DIRECTLY OR VIA AN OPTICAL SPLIT,
TO A TRANSMITTER THAT MAY BE OPERATING. THIS SPECIFICALLY APPLIES TO
FIBERS THAT ARE TO BE CONNECTED TO OPTICAL RECEIVERS OR OTHER DEVICES
AT ANY DISTANCE FROM THE LASER TRANSMITTER.
The OTEA-CO-Bxx-x1x optical amplifier emits invisible laser radiation
that can cause permanent eye damage. AVOID DIRECT EXPO-
SURE TO BEAM. Operate the transmitter only with the proper optical
fiber installed in the optical connector. The “Pump” switch on the front of

SHOCK HAZARD
The OTEA-CO-Bxx-x1x is designed for indoor use only. Direct exposure to moisture must be avoided.
the OTEA should be turned to the off position whenever the optical connector cover is opened and there is no
installed fiber (as when the fiber connector is being installed or removed from the transmitter connector).

OTEA-CO-B19-216 EDFA; 1RU single channel Booster; (2x) 16dBm/40mW; 100-240VAC
OTEA-CO-B23-416 EDFA; 1RU single channel Booster; (4x) 16dBm/40mW; 100-240VAC
* (In CATV applications, no more than 40 mW/16 dBm launch level per fiber
should be planned to avoid excessive Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS)
in the connected fiber. SBS can negatively impact link CNR and CSO
performance. For example, the Model OTEACO-B23-416 Quad output EDFA
utilizes an integrated low insertion loss 1x4 optical splitter, which reduces
the overall 200mW/23dBm overall output power by 7dB per port, producing
the maximum achievable fiber launch level of 16 dBm per fiber, out of each of
the output ports).

INTRODUCTION
The Olson Technology, Inc. Model OTEA-CO-Bxx-x1x One-, Two- or Four-Output 1550nm Erbium
Doped Fiber Amplifier is a 1RU rack mount EDFA package containing up to four (4) identical 16dBm
optical outputs. It is engineered to meet the requirements for a high-density solution for the large-scale
distribution of broadband CATV video (and/or wideband L-Band video) & data signals to traditional
CATV HFC nodes in the field or to video overlay receivers in a FTTH/FTTP or PON system.
The EDFA is made up of two main parts. The Fiber Gain Module in the EDFA is the core of the EDFA responsible
for amplifying the 1550nm optical signal that is run through it. The External Control System is allows the user to
monitor the states of the gain module, such as pump power, pump temperature, pump current, input and output
power, and adjust all the parameters to ensure a stabilized output power of the gain module. This system is also
responsible for the front panel status alarms. Detailed working parameters of the EDFA are shown by the LCD on
the front panel. This information can also be accessed via RS232 interface by an external computer.

INSTILLATION
1. Connections:
Begin by being sure that the EDFAs power switch and pump key are both in the off position. Connect the
supplied EIA power cable from the rear of the unit to a 110/220VAC @ 50/60Hz outlet.
Connect the fiber optic patch cords to the optical input and output of the EDFA.
2. Turning the EDFA on and off:
First turn on the power switch (on the rear panel), the LCD and LED’s will come on. The “Pump Status”
and “Output Power” LED’s will both be red. The “Pump” key may now be turned to the ON position. The
“Pump Status” and “Output Power” LED’s should now turn green. Once the input and output power levels
have been verified, setup is done.
To turn off the EDFA, first turn the “Pump” key to the OFF position, after a few moments, the power switch
located on the rear panel may be switched to the OFF position.
3. LED Indicators:
POWER: Shows green when power in on.
PUMP STATUS: Shows green when pump is working properly, and red when it is not functioning or
incorrectly setup. The pump will shutdown if the optical input power is less then -2dBm, pump temperature
goes over 35C, or the pump current exceeds its limit value.
INPUT POWER: Shows green when the optical input power is in the correct range (-2dBm to +10dBm)
and will show red when the optical input power is below -2 dBm.
OUTPUT POWER: Shows red when the optical output power is 2dBm less then the rated output power,
otherwise shows green.
OVER TEMP: Shows green when pump temperature is below 35C, otherwise shows red. It will flash
green if the fan stops functioning and will flash red when the pump TEC (thermoelectric cooler) current is
higher then 1.3A.
REMOTE: Remote control will show green when the amplifier is connected with a computer through the
RS-232 interface.

TROUBLESHOOTING
When the EDFA is functioning correctly, the first five LED’s on the front panel should all show green, and the last
two will not be lit. If any of the LED’s turn red, it indicates that system has gone into alarm. In this case, be consult
the following:
1: Be sure the Pump Key is in the ON position.
2: Be sure the optical input power is in the correct range (-2dBm to +10dBm). The INPUT STATUS LED will be
red if the optical input power is below -2 dBm.
3: The ambient operating temperature range for the EDFA is 0-50C. If the ambient temperature goes to high it will
cause the TEC (thermoelectric cooler) inside the EDFA to exceed its current limit. This will cause the OVERTEMP
LED to turn red. If the pump temperature exceeds 35C, the pump will shut down automatically. If this happens the
PUMP STATUS LED will turn red.
