Important Information
Notice for Vinyl Liner Pools: Before installing your pool cleaner, examine the interior of your pool carefully. If the vinyl
liner is brittle or has stones, wrinkles, roots or metal corrosion in contact with the underside of the liner, or has damage to the
base material or supporting walls, do not install the cleaner before having a qualified professional perform the necessary repairs
or liner replacement. Zodiac Pool Systems, Inc. (Zodiac) will not be responsible for liner damage caused by a cleaner
which is in disrepair, pattern removal from a vinyl liner, or a cleaner used in a pool having an aged or deteriorated liner.

• Alwaysdisconnectthecleanerfromthepoolwallorskimmerbeforecleaningorbackwashingthepoolfilter.After
cleaning or backwashing, let the filtration system run for at least five (5) minutes before re-connecting the cleaner.
• Removethecleanerfromthepoolbeforechemicalorshocktreatments.Waitaminimumoffour(4)hoursaftersuper
chlorination before re-installing the cleaner.

MX6isdesignedandmanufacturedforeasyinstallation,andyearsofcarefreeoperation.Beforeinstallingthe
cleaner, please take a few moments to become familiar with its components and to review the items listed under
Important Information.
Likemostmechanicaldevices,theMX6requiresperiodicadjustments,routinemaintenance,andthe
replacementofcertainhardworkingparts.BesuretohavetheMX6checkedoccasionallybyyourlocaldealeror
service center.
AlwaysinsistongenuineZodiacreplacementparts.Non-Zodiacpartsarenotmadetoourspecifications.They
mayhaveanadverseeffectontheoperationofyourMX6ormayevendamageit.

Installation
Prepare the Pool
1. Turnoffthepoolfilterpump.
2. Manuallyvacuumthepool,andmakesurethepoolfilterandpumpbasketareclean.
3. Closethepoolmaindrainline.
4. Aimthereturnlinefittingsdown.
Assemble and Connect the Hose
WARNING

Ensurethatyourvacuumsuctionttingsinstalledinyourpoolforconnectionofyoursuction-side
poolcleanerarecertiedasbeingcompliantwithapplicablesafetystandardssuchasIAPMOSPS4.Donot
blockthesuctionttingswithanypartoryourbody.Donotexposeyourhair,looseclothing,jewelry,etc.toany
suctionoutletttingsorhoseendsinthepool/spa.
Assemble hose sections:
Pushandtwisttheconnectoroneachhosesectionuntiltheylockintopositionwithclickingsound.Hose
cuffshavethree(3)connectionpositions.Anyofthethree(3)positionsaresufficientforanair-tightseal.

Connect to a skimmer:
The FlowKeeper valve must always be used in single skimmer
installations.Thevalveregulatesflowtoensurethepoolpumpand
cleaner run properly.
If the pool has more than one skimmer, connect the hose to
the one closest to the pump.
Thepartsusedtoconnectthehoseandthesequenceinwhichtheyare
installeddependsonthetypeofskimmer(Figure3).
1. Removetheskimmerbasket.
2. Connectthevalvecuff,FlowKeepervalveandthe45degree
elbow together.
3. Twistlockthemaleendofthehoseintotheendofthe45degree
elbow.
4. Inserttheskimmerpipewitharrowpointingdown.
Connect to a dedicated suction line:
1. Twistlockthemaleendofthehoseintothelargeend
oftheextended45°elbow.
2. ConnectelbowtotheinstalledSafetyVac
wall fitting (sold separately).
3. Angletheelbowupwardtowardsthewatersurface
(Figure4).

1. Measureenoughhosetojustreachthefarthestpointofthepoolfromtheskimmer
ordedicatedsuctionline.Removeanyadditionalhosesections,asnecessary.
See(a)inFigure5,below.
2. Nextattachtheleaderhoseattotheendwherethecleanerheadwillbe
connected.See(b)inFigure5,below.Theextralengthallowsthecleanerto
reach the far point in the pool if a loop forms while in operation.

Test for Proper Flow
WARNING
To avoid serious injury, make sure to turn off the suction pump that is responsible for the pool cleaner
operation.Donotexposeyourhair,looseclothing,jewelry,etc.totheopenendofthehose.
Theflowregulatorvalveisdesignedtoconsistentlylimithighflowofwaterthroughthecleaner.Whenflowis
correct, the cleaner components are less susceptible to damage and the life of the cleaner can be extended.
Wheel rotation speed is a good indicator of how water is flowing through the cleaner. By checking for proper
wheelrotationtiming,youcanverifytheMX6isoperatingatmaximumefficiency.
Time wheel rotations:
1. Turnonthepoolfilterpump.
2. Obtainastopwatchortimer.
3. Leavingthepumponandwaterflowingthroughthe
cleaner,bringtheMX6tothesurfaceofthewaterand
holditfullysubmergedjustbelowthewaterline.
4. Locatetheyellowwheelspeedindicatorinsidethe
wheelrimonthehandlesideofthecleaner(Figure8).
Connect the Cleaner
1. Removetheinstructiondecalsfromthehoseand
flow regulator valve.
2. Attachtheflowregulatorvalvetotheleaderhose.
Leader hose is the hose section with foam float
pre-attached (Figure 6).
3. Submergethecleanerandflooditwith
water.
4. Whenbubblesstopcomingfromthecleaner,
connect the hose by pushing the flow regulator
valveontothecleaner(Figure7).
5. Allowthecleanertosinktothebottomofthepool.
6. Temporarilydisconnectthehosefromtheskimmer
or dedicated vacuum line.
7. Turnonthepoolfilterpump.
8. Floodthehosewithwaterbyplacingtheendin
front of one of the pool water return inlets.
9. Turnoffthepoolfilterpump.
10.Reconnectthehosetotheskimmerordedicated
vacuum line.

5. Begin timing how long it takes for the wheels to
rotate10times.
6. Notehowmanysecondsfor10rotations.If
the count is within 20 - 25 seconds, flow to
thecleanerisadequateandnoadjustmentis
necessary.
Adjust flow if necessary:
1. Determineiftheflowtothecleanerisadequate
orshouldbeadjusted.Ifthecountis:
•26-50seconds---IncreaseFlow(+)
•10-19seconds---DecreaseFlow(–)
2. UsetheFlowKeeper™valvesettingupordown,
oradjustthevalvesattheequipmentpadto
increase or decrease flow to the cleaner as
necessary(Figure9).

Operation and Routine Maintenance
TheMX6cycleson/offwiththepoolfiltrationpump,vacuumingandcleaningallsurfacesrandomlythroughout
thepool.Theclimbingabilityofthecleanerisdependentonthepool’sshapeandavailablewaterflow.IfMX6
isnotclimbingyourwalls,ensuretheflowiscorrectbycheckingthewheelspeedandadjustthevalvesas
necessary.Also,ensurethepool'ssurfaceisnotcoveredinalgaeasaslipperysurfacewillaffectthecleaner’s
traction.
Duringeachcoveragepatterncycle,thecleanertravelsforwardandpivots.Thepowerscrubberunderneaththe
cleaner creates downward force for climbing and stability as well as directing debris into the cleaner mouth.
Emptying the Pump Basket
FortheMX6tooperateatoptimumefficiency,emptythepumpbasketregularly.Themoredebrisinthepool,the
more often the pump basket should be cleared.
Backwashing the Pool Filter
AlwaysdisconnecttheMX6fromthepoolbeforecleaningorbackwashingthepoolfilter.Aftercleaningor
backwashing, let the filtration system run for at least five (5) minutes to flush out the suction lines before
reconnecting the cleaner.
Adding Chemicals to the Pool
Removethecleanerfromthepoolforatleastfour(4)hourswhenaddingchemicals.
Storage and Winterizing
NeverstoretheMX6indirectsunlight.Whenstoringforthewinter,drainoutallthewater(freezedamageis
notcoveredbythewarranty).Removeallconnectorsandadaptersfromthededicatedsuctionlineorskimmer.
When storing the cleaner, even for short times, do not coil the hose as the hose may develop memory which can
affect cleaner performance. Disassemble the hoses and layout flat to store.

Removing Trapped Debris from Cleaner
WARNING
Toavoidseriousinjury,makesurethatthecleanerisdisconnectedfromthehoseandthepoolsuctionpump
is turned off prior to starting this operation.
1. Presstheyellowbuttonontopofthecleanertoreleasethelatch.
2. Openthecleanerliduntilitstaysopeninaverticalposition(Figure10).
3. Lookintoengineandremoveanyleavesordebris(Figure10).
4. Ifnecessary,slowlypushenginepaddlesforwardand/orbackwardtomovestuckdebristoanaccessible
position then remove it. When moving the engine paddles, make sure the cleaner tracks are allowed to move
freely as they will turn as the engine paddles rotate.
5. Closethelidandensurethelatchclicksinplace.
6. Turncleaneroverandcheckfordebrisinscrubberandinlet(Figure11).

ProperFlow”.Adjustvalvesattheequipmentpadtochangeflowif
necessary.
•Checkforairinsystem.Ifwaterlevelinpumpbasketdropsoryousee
excessive air bubbles in the pump basket or coming from the return
lines,thereisairinthesystem.Checkhoseconnections,tightenall
fittings at pump and check o-ring at pump basket for wear.
Cleanerpatterns,doesnotcoverentirepool. •Checkforadequateflowtothecleaner.Refertosection,“Testfor
ProperFlow”.Adjustvalvesattheequipmentpadtochangeflowif
necessary.
•Ensurereturnfittingsaredirecteddown.Addareturndiverterif
necessary.
•Makesurehoseisnotkinkedorcoiled.Layinsuntostraightenif
necessary.
•Verifycorrecthosefloatpositioning.Hosefloatshouldbeonthehose
closesttothecleanerapproximately9inchesfrom
the cleaner.
• Observecleanerformorethanfive(5)minutesandensurethatthe
cleaner periodically reverses direction. If it does not, contact your
dealer or service center for help.
