camcorderordecktoyourMacusingaFireWireorUSBcable,thenselectCapture(or
“LogandTransfer”forAVCHDcontent).ThesingleFireWirecablecarriesthevideoand
audiodataandmanagesalldevicecontrol.WhencapturingfromDVcamerasusing
FireWire(IEEE1394),FinalCutExpresstransfersthedatadirectlyfromthetapetothe
computer’sharddrive.HDVandAVCHDaretransferredoverFirewireorUSBandcon

vertedintothehighlyecientandframe-accurateAppleIntermediateCodecformat.
WhenyoucapturefootagefromaDVtape,theCapturewindowhelpsyouscanthrough
thevideotapetoselectgoodshots,labelthemforfuturereference,andaddnotesabout

Masterandaliateclipsareespeciallyusefulaftercapturinglargeamountsofmedia.

WiththeDigitalCinemaDesktopfeature,youcanplaybackHDandDVclipsfull

totheTimelinebydraggingthemdirectlytoatrackorbyusingtheoverlaycontrols
intheCanvas.Positionclipsatatimevaluetospecifyexactlywhentheclipswillplay
inthevideo.Rearrangeclipsuntiltheyareexactlythewayyouwantthem.FinalCut
ExpressusesanOpenFormatTimeline,whichallowsclipsfromDV,HDV,andAVCHD

exibilityinmakingeditsintheTimeline,andunlimitededitingcreativity.Theediting
toolsinthepaletteincludethefollowing:

Razor blade. Cutsasingleclipintotwopieces.Thiscanbeusefulforquicklyrearranging
piecesofyoursequence,deletingasectionofaclip,applyinganeecttoaspecicpart
ofaclip,ormovingapieceofacliptothesamelocationonanothertrack.

Ripple edit. Changesthedurationofaclip.ItmovesthelocationofeithertheOut
pointprecedingortheInpointfollowinganeditpoint.Thedurationofthecliptothe
leftortherightoftheeditpointisshortenedorlengthenedtottheneweditpoint
withoutchangingthelocationoftheeditinthesequence.

• Roll edit. Changesboththeselectedclipandanadjacentclip.Thistypeofeditadjusts
thelocationofaneditpointsharedbytwoclips;theOutpointoftherstclipandthe
Inpointofthesecondcliparemovedorrolled.Thischangesthelocationoftheeditin
thesequenceaswellasthedurationofeachclip.Rolleditsareusefulwhenyouwant
tomatchtheactionofoneclipwiththeactionofanotherandneedtondtheright
intersectingframes.

Slip edit. MovestheInandOutpointsofaclipsimultaneouslywhilemaintainingits
durationandpositionintheeditedsequence.Surroundingclipsarenotaected,just
therangeofframesintheclip.Thisisusefulforadjustingfootageyou’veeditedinto
