How to prepare a surface for bonding with PC-Clear Epoxy
METAL
Remove contaminants such as dust, dirt, oil and grime with a solvents such as alcohol, acetone, or Lacquer
Thinner. Mild detergent solution in water is also good removing contaminants. Use a clean paper towel or rag for
wiping. Do not use Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner for removing contaminants. Epoxy typically sticks to most
paints. Remove rust and loose paint with sandpaper or wire brush. Smooth, glossy and shiny surfaces should be scuffed
using sandpaper to increase adhesion.
CERAMIC
Broken ceramics must be clean and free of old adhesives. Remove all old adhesive and wipe clean with alcohol. Warm
broken pieces and it will speed the cure. Always apply PC-Clear Epoxy to both surfaces and press together. Caution:
ceramic edges are sharp, wear gloves.
WOOD
Remove loose paint, sawdust, wood fibers and debris with stiff brush, sandpaper or scraper. Remove loose wood that
has been damaged by rot, termites or carpenter ants. Soft wood should be treated with a Wood Hardener such as PC-
Petrifier or PC-Rot Terminator. Oily types of wood should be lightly sanded and wiped clean with acetone.
PLASTIC
PC-Clear Epoxy sticks to some plastics (examples: Rigid PVC, CPVC, Polyester, fiberglass, ABS, “Bakelite”, SBR, Buna-N
and recycled tires). Rough up the surface with sandpaper and remove contaminants using solvents such as Denatured
Alcohol (ethanol), Acetone, Rubbing Alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or Lacquer Thinner. Mild detergent solution in water is
also good for cleaning. Plastics such as LDPE, HDPE, Polypropylene, “Nylon”, “Teflon”, vinyl and “Plexiglas” cannot be
bonded with epoxy. Test to be sure.
COUNTERTOP
Clean the quartz, “Corian” or granite with soapy water and a cloth or an ammonia-based cleaner. Be sure to also clean
any scratched areas as well. Dry the surface with a dry cloth.
How to clean-up after PC-Clear application
Use Denatured Alcohol (ethanol), Acetone, Rubbing Alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or Lacquer Thinner are suitable solvents
for removing PC-Clear Epoxy before it cures.
Clean hands and skin with soap and water.
Cured epoxy can be removed by applying Paint Remover or Paint Stripper to soften the epoxy surface. Scratch off the
softened epoxy. Repeat as needed.
