GENERAL

These battery chargers are ideal for lead acid accumulators on petrol and diesel engines, mo-

torcycles, boats etc.

The charging current delivered by these chargers is designed according to the charging char-

acteristic W bend – see the DIN41774 norm.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

To ensure safe operation when using your battery charger, make sure you follow basic safety

principles to reduce risk of personal injury, electric shock, and ﬁre. Please read the following

instruction prior to operating this product and keep for future use.

Children and Inﬁrm persons

This charger is not intended for use by young children or inﬁrm persons unless they have

been adequately supervised by a responsible person to ensure that they can use the appliance

safely. Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the charger.

Guard Against Electric Shock

Do not work on or near "live" equipment or services.

Work Environment

Do not use the charger in damp or wet areas. Moisture will damage the transformer. Work in

an area that is not cluttered and has good light. Do not expose the charger to direct sunlight,

heat, snow or rain. Do not use near ﬂammable gases or liquids. Keep work area clean.

Clothing

Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewellery to prevent these from touching the battery

or charger.

Look after the charger

When not in use store in a dry, high place or keep locked up out of children's reach. Use the

charger only for its intended purposes.

Protect the Cables

Do not carry the charger by the cable or pull the cable to remove the plug from the mains

socket. Protect the cable from sharp objects, heat and oil.

Check Before Use

Always ensure that the charger and cable are not damaged.

Maintain tools with care

Inspect charger cord and extension leads periodically for damage, if damaged have repair car-

ried out by an authorized dealer. Keep handles dry and clean.

Disconnect charger

When not in use, disconnect from mains supply.

Repairs

Always have repairs carried out by a qualiﬁed person for your safety.

FOR ADDITIONAL PROTECTION FROM ELECTRIC SHOCK

It is recommended that this tool be used in conjunction with a residual current device (RCD)

with a rated residual current of 30mA or less.

IMPORTANT NOTES!

There are no user serviceable parts inside the charger. Do not open the charger by yourself. If

the cord or wires to the crocodile clips become damaged return the unit for repair.

Do not let the charger unattended for long periods of time.

When the battery is being charged you may notice bubbling in the ﬂuid caused by the release

of gas. As the gas is ﬂammable, no naked lights or smoking should be allowed around the

battery, and the area should be kept well ventilated. Because of the risk of explosive gas, only

connect and disconnect, the battery leads when the mains supply is disconnected.

Never use the battery charger inside the car or on the bonnet.

Strictly follow the instructions of vehicles' manufacturers for the use of battery chargers

before using the charger.

TYPES OF BATTERIES

These chargers are only suitable for Lead-Acid batteries with an amp hour capacity not less

than 20 Ah and should not be used to recharge Gel Cells, NICAD, NI-Mh or any other type of

battery.

DANGER! AVOID GETTING ELECTROLYTE ON YOUR SKIN OR CLOTHES IT IS ACIDIC AND

CAN BURN. IF THIS HAPPENS IMMEDIATELY RINSE THE AFFECTED AREA WITH WATER.

ASSEMBLY

RBC320 , RBC520 and RBC620 will require some minor assembly before use.

Fit the wheels

Connect the red (+) battery clamp to the movable

cable.

Connect the black (-) battery clamp to the ﬁxed

cable which comes out directly out of the battery

charger.

PREPARATION FOR CHARGING

Before charging check that the capacity of the battery (Ah) is not less than 20 Ah, that the

battery is suitable type for charging with this charger and the voltage of the battery is suit-

able for charging with this charger.

Remove the caps of the battery charger (if ﬁtted) to let the gas produced escape.

Check that the level of the electrolyte covers the plates of the battery. If not add distilled

water to cover them

WARNING! PLEASE WEAR EYE PROTECTION AND USE THE EXTREME CAUTION DURING

THIS OPERATION AS THE ELECTROLYTE IS A HIGHLY CORROSIVE ACID.

Please remember that the correct charging status of the battery can be determined by using

a hydrometer which permits to measure the speciﬁc gravity of the electrolyte.

The following density values (kgs/1 at 20 C) as a reference point:

1.28 = Fully charged battery

1.21 = Half Charged battery

1.14 = Flat battery

Check that the charger is turned off and is disconnected for mains supply. Connect the posi-

tive charging lead to the appropriate output terminal on the charger for the type of battery

to be charged ie 12 or 24 volt.

CHARGING

Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the battery and the black clamp to the

negative terminal (-).

Select the mode switch to the charge position

Select a suitable charge setting.

Connect the mains cable to the mains and set the switch in “ON” position.

The ammeter of the battery charger will indicate the current delivered to-

wards the battery (beginning of charge).

Note: THE CORRECT CHARGE RATE CAN BE DETERMINED BY DIVIDING THE AH CAPACITY

OF THE BATTERY BY 10. EXCEEDING THIS CAN REDUCE THE LIFE BATTERY.

During the charge the pointer of the ammeter will decrease slowly according to the capacity

and condition of the battery.

Note: BOOST FUNCTION CAN BE USED FOR A SHORT PERIOD TO BOOST A BATTERY TO

ASSIST IN STARTING.

Periodically check the speciﬁc gravity to determine the state of charge.

WARNING! LOW OR NO MAINTENANCE OF THE BATTERY.

Charge these types of battery slowly and keep on checking the voltage at the battery terminal

with a multimeter. When the voltage reaches 14.4 Volts for a 12 Volt battery or 28.8 Volt for a

24 volt battery. STOP the charging.

END OF CHARGE

When charging is completed turning the mains switch in off position and disconnect the

mains cable from the mains plug. Disconnect the charging clamps from the battery terminals

and put the battery charger in a dry place. Reﬁt the caps of the battery

STARTING

WARNING! THE STARTING FUNCTION MUST ONLY BE USED WHEN THEN A BATTERY DOES

NOT HAVE ENOUGH ENERGY TO MAKE THE STARTER MOTOR ROTATE.

WARNING: THE USE OF THE STARTER FUNCTION ON SOME VEHICLES MAY DAMAGE THE

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. PLEASE CHECK WITH THE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER AND VEHICLES'

HAND BOOK BEFORE USING. THE OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED

TO THE VEHICLE.

To use the start function:

Ensure that the power to the charger is switched OFF

Connect the positive charging lead to the appropriate output terminal on the charger for the

type of battery to be charged ie 12 or 24 volt

Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the battery and the black clamp to the

negative terminal (-).

WARNING! IF THE CLAMPS ARE CONNECT THE WRONG WAY SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE

VEHICLES' ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MAY RESULT.

SET the mode / charge switch to

Turn the charger ON

Start the vehicle immediate with the following procedure.

START 3 Seconds ON, 120 Seconds OFF, 5 CYCLES MAXIMUM

When the vehicle starts, turn OFF the charger and disconnect the charging clamps.

WARNING! THE STARTING OPERATION MUST FOLLOW STRICTLY THE CYCLES WORK/

PAUSE INDICATED ON THE STARTER. FAILING TO FOLLOW THIS WILL RESULT IN THE MAIN

IN LINE FUSE BLOWING AND WILL VOID THE WARRANTY OF THE CHARGER.

NOTE: IF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START, THEN BOOST CHARGE THE BATTERY FOR 10 TO

15 MINUTES TO MAKE STARTING EASIER

TIMER FUNCTION

RPBC 520 and RBC620 only.

The charging switch positions 4, 5 and 6 on these models are for boost charging the battery.

Then any of these positions are selected the charge timer is activated. The charge timer can

then be set to boost charge time up to 60 minutes.

WARRANTY:

This product has been manufactured to a high quality standard. It is guaranteed

against faulty materials and workmanship for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Please retain your receipt as proof of purchase.

If the product is found to be defective within the relevant time period, we will either

replace all defective parts or, at our discretion, replace the unit free of charge.

This warranty will not apply:

(i) where this product has been subjected to misuse, abuse, accident or want of care;

(ii) where this product has been used for a purpose for which it was not designed or is

not suited;

(iii) where the service of this product has been undertaken by a non-authorised person

or company or if non-approved parts have been used;

(iv) where this product has been used for industrial purposes.

Should service become necessary during the warranty period, the purchaser should

contact an Authorised Service Centre or J W Ross. In order to obtain warranty service,

the purchaser must present the store receipt showing the name of the retailer and the

date of purchase.

The period of the warranty begins from the original date of purchase, notwithstanding

any subsequent repair or parts replacement.

Purchaser shall be responsible for all transport charges to and from the Authorised

Service Centre.

Damage in transit is not covered by this warranty. The purchaser should remove from

the product any liquids (if applicable) before sending the tool for service or repair.

Any accessories should be packed securely to prevent damage.

Warranty exclusions

Wear parts or service related parts required when performing normal and regular

maintenance of this product are not covered by warranty unless it is found to be defective

by an Authorised Service Centre. These include, but are not limited to:

Battery Clamps, Knobs and Fuse.

Note: REPEATED BLOWING OF THE MAIN IN LINE FUSE AS A RESULT OF NOT FOLLOW-

ING THE STARTING CYCLE TIMES (SEE PAGE 6) IS CONSIDERED AS MISUSE.
