In order to ensure correct and safe usage of your battery charger, you should read
these instructions carefully. Please store these instructions for future reference.
SAFETY
Ensure that cables are regularly inspected and kept in good condition.
Never use the battery charger if the mains lead or plug is damaged.
Never use the battery charger if the output leads or crocodile clips are damaged.
Never use the battery charger if it has been dropped or damaged in any way.
WARNING: Battery charging produces explosive gases. Prevent flames and sparks.
Provide adequate ventilation during charging.
Do not leave charging batteries unattended for long periods or overnight.
Do not operate the charger above its rated output for long periods.
Monitor charging to ensure that a decreasing level of charge is occurring.
Electrical repairs or replacement of the mains cable should only be carried out by the
manufacturer, its service agent or a suitably qualified electrician / electrical technician in
order to avoid a hazard.
GENERAL SAFETY
This battery charger can be used by children aged from 8 years and above, and persons
with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if
they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe
way and understand the hazards involved. Children must not play with this battery charger.
Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be carried out by children without supervision.
GASES
The charging process produces flammable and explosive gases - the area in which charging
takes place should be kept well ventilated. Only connect and disconnect the battery leads
when the mains supply is disconnected. Avoid flames or sparks! Do not smoke!

TYPES OF BATTERIES
This charger is only suitable for Lead Acid batteries and should not be used to recharge
NICAD or any other type of battery. This charger must not be used to recharge non-
rechargeable batteries.
POINTS TO NOTE
When not in use store the charger in a dry place to avoid moisture damage. Your Maypole
Battery Charger is suitable for INDOOR USE ONLY. Avoid exposure to rain or liquids at all
time. The Battery Charger should not be opened. Any attempt at modification or repair by
the user will result in the loss of our guarantee. Maintenance work should only be carried
out by a qualified electrical technician.
DANGER
The use of safety goggles and gloves when working with lead acid batteries is strongly
advised.
Avoid contact with the electrolyte as this is acidic and is likely to cause burns to the skin or
clothes. If this occurs you should rinse the affected area with plenty of water immediately. In
the event of burns to the skin, medical advice should be sought if the symptoms persist.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE USING
Please read the data on the front of this leaflet for the recommended battery capacities
suitable for use with this charger. Use with batteries smaller than this may lead to
overcharging and overheating of the battery.
A) PREPARATION
Always charge in a well ventilated area!
It is recommended that the battery is disconnected from the car when charging, as this will
prevent possible damage to the alternator. Please read your vehicle manufacturer’s
instructions for further information and advice.
B) PREPARATION OF THE BATTERY
Firstly remove the caps from each cell and check the level of liquid. If it is below the
recommended level, top up with ionised or distilled water. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
SHOULD TAP WATER BE USED
To avoid battery acid splashing, the cell caps should be replaced but not tightened until
charging is complete. This allows any gases formed during charging to escape. It is
inevitable that some minor escape of acid will occur during charging.
If your battery is permanently sealed it is unnecessary to carry out these checks and
charging should be discontinued when the battery reaches a “gassing” voltage of 14.4V.
C) CONNECTION
To avoid sparks which could cause an explosion, the mains supply should be disconnected
before making or breaking battery connections.
Connect the crocodile clips to the battery in the following order.
1) Connect the positive charging lead (RED) to the positive post of the battery (marked P or
+)
2) Connect the negative charging lead (BLACK) to the negative post of the battery (marked
N or -)
3) If connecting to a battery which is still installed in the vehicle, the second connection
should be made to the chassis away from fuel lines, hot or moving parts
It is important to ensure that both crocodile clips are making good contact with their
respective terminal posts. The battery charger is fitted with an external, reverse polarity
protection fuse. If the leads are incorrectly connected the fuse will blow. Disconnect the
battery charger from the mains and battery before replacing the fuse. Make sure the
replacement fuse is of the same design and rating as the one removed.

D) CHARGING
Insert the mains plug into the mains supply (230 Volts AC only). Switch on. Your Battery
Charger should now be working and the rate of charge will be shown on the ammeter fitted
on the front of the charger. When a flat battery is initially connected to the Battery Charger
the charging rate should build up quickly. As the battery becomes more charged the rate of
charge will drop, this is normal. The charging current will never fall to zero as the charger
will continue to give a small output even when the battery is fully charged.
WARNING! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE VEHICLE WITH THE CHARGER
CONNECTED. THIS MAY BLOW THE OUTPUT FUSE OR DAMAGE YOUR BATTERY
CHARGER.
A charging time of no more than 10 hours is recommended at no more than 10% of the
battery’s ampere hour capacity. i.e. 40 Ah battery should be charged at no more than 4
Amps. The battery charger is fitted with an internal, automatic thermal protection device, if
the charger overheats due to overload, environment or for any other reason, charging will be
interrupted, charging will restart automatically when the charger has cooled down.
Note: With a fully charged or faulty battery, virtually no charge may register on the ammeter.
E) ELECTROLYTE
Regularly check the specific gravity of the liquid, using a hydrometer, until a reading of “Fully
Charged” or 1,250 is reached.
F) WHEN CHARGING IS COMPLETE
For a battery still installed in the vehicle:
Disconnect the charger from the mains supply first, then remove the chassis connection.
Remove the battery connection last.
Otherwise: Disconnect the charger from the mains supply, then disconnect the crocodile
clips from the battery terminal posts, removing the negative (black clip) first.
Inspect the liquid levels in each cell and top up if necessary, using the correct fluid. Now
push home or tighten the caps. Any surplus fluid around the cell tops should be wiped off
(this should be done with extreme care as it is acidic).
If the battery has been removed for charging, replace it and re-connect the cables.
G) CAR BATTERY MAINTENANCE
It is essential to keep your battery regularly charged up throughout the year, especially
during the winter months. In the winter the effectiveness of your car battery is reduced by
the cold. Oil is thick, engines are difficult to start and the heater, windscreen wipers and
lights are all draining power. It is at this time that batteries have to be at peak power. If
your battery is not regularly maintained and kept fully charged, it can cause problems and a
possible breakdown.
H) FAULTY CELLS
Batteries are usually made with six cells. One of these cells can deteriorate or get
damaged. If after several hours charging your battery is still flat, you should test the battery.
Take hydrometer readings from each cell in the battery. If one reading is lower than the
others, this could indicate a faulty cell. The battery will require replacement if one or more
cells are faulty.

CARE
It is important to maintain the battery leads on a regular basis as loose or dirty connections
on your battery terminals may prevent the vehicle from starting. Do this by removing the
leads from the battery, cleaning the inside of each connector and the terminal posts on the
battery. Smear the terminal posts with grease, replace the connectors and tighten firmly.
For standard lead acid batteries, but not maintenance free, it is essential to keep the
Electrolyte level above the plates. NOTE, however that you should not overfill the battery,
as the electrolyte is strongly acidic. When topping up DO NOT USE TAP WATER. Always
use distilled or ionised water. It is important to keep the acid level topped up. If necessary
have it checked by your garage.
CHECKING THE CONDITION OF NON SEALED LEAD ACID BATTERIES
Using a hydrometer, which can be purchased from most motor accessory stores, you can
check the specific gravity of the electrolyte in each cell. The hydrometer is used to suck up
a quantity of fluid from the cell. The weighted float inside the hydrometer will register the
condition of that cell. Put the fluid back into the cell after testing, taking care not to splash
the fluid about.
ALWAYS WASH OUT THE HYDROMETER AFTER USE.
SIMPLE FAULTS
A) If the charger fails to work:
1. Switch off immediately at mains
2. After switching off the mains supply, ensure that the crocodile clips are making good
contact with the correct terminal posts and the correct output voltage has been selected.
3. Ensure that the leads are not damaged.
4. Switch mains supply on and check again.
B) If the charger still does not work:
1) Switch off immediately at mains and disconnect the output leads from the battery.
2) Check that the output fuse and the fuse in the mains plug are intact.
3) Check to see that the positive and negative leads are connected to the correct terminals.
