Safety Information

2 Safety Information

2.1 Autorized users

For the ISD to function correctly and safety, it must be mounted and operated by

sufficiently qualified personnel.

The following qualifications are required for the various tasks involved:

2.1.1 Mounting and maintenance

• General technical training

• Knowledge of the standard guidelines relating to safety at the workplace

2.1.2 Electrical installation and replacement

• Practical training in electrical engineering

• Knowledge of the standard safety guidelines relating to electrical engineering

• Experience operating the devices in the relevant application

2.1.3 Startup, operation and configuration

• Knowledge of the hardware and software environment of the relevant application

• Basic understanding of data transfer methods

2.2 Intended use

The ISD 230, 260 and 280 systems are used to establish a cordless link for transferring

serial data in full-duplex mode using infrared light.

The link, in this sense, always comprises a pair of devices (2 units) with different carrier

frequencies. Depending on the type of link, the units are either installed at a fixed and

mobile station (variable link) or at two fixed stations (permanent link).

Any warranty claims vis-à-vis SICK AG will be rendered invalid if the device is used for any

other purpose or if changes are made to the device, also as part of the mounting and

electrical installation procedures.

2.3 General safety instructions and protection measures

Always read the general safety instructions carefully and observe them at all times. This

also applies to the warnings provided for the individual activities described in this

document.

Shock hazard!

Depending on the type of device, the AMS 50 Connection Module (accessory) for the ISD

is connected to a mains voltage of 230 V AC 50 Hz or 115 V AC 50/60 Hz.

When working with electrical equipment, always follow the relevant safety specifications.

Safety Information

Infra-red light can cause blindness!

The ISD 230/260/280 emit infra-red radiation (

LIGHT EMITTING LASER DIODE CLASS 1 according EN 60825-1/prA1:1999.

Looking directly at the beam can seriously damage your eyesight.

The light is not perceptible to the human eye (no eyelid reflex). The emitted radiation is not

dangerous to human skin.

When mounting and aligning the both units switch off the system.

Never look directly into the large lenses on the front of the device at close range

against the direction of transmission!

Observe the most recent laser specifications (DIN EN 60825-1, latest version).

2.4 Quick stop and quick restart

2.4.1 Stopping the ISD

Switch off the power supply.

The ISD stops the data transmission.

2.4.2 Restarting the ISD

Switch on the power supply.

The ISD starts the data transmission.

When operating the system in cooling plants (below 0 °C) and if the system is switched

on when cold, data transmission can only be guaranteed after the warm-up time (max.

approx. 60 min., depending on the startup temperature) has expired.

2.5 Environmental information

The ISD is designed to cause minimum impact on the environment.

2.5.1 Power requirements

The power requirements are low:

• the ISD has a power consumption of max. 0.4 A at 24 V DC

• the ISD with heater has a power consumption of max. 2.5 A at 24 V DC

The values are given for devices with disconnected switching outputs.

2.5.2 Disposal after removal from service

Always dispose irreparable devices in a manner that is not harmful to the environment and

in accordance with the applicable national waste disposal regulations. The ISD can be

separated into recyclable secondary raw materials and special-category waste (electronic

crap).

SICK AG currently does not accept any unusable or irreparable devices.

3.1.3 System requirements

The following are required to startup and configurate the ISD:

1. ISD without heater:

For each unit a SICK connection module AMS 50 to provide the power supply and

connect the data and function interfaces. Output voltage 24 V DC ±20 % according to

IEC 742, max. 0.75 A. Enclosure rating max. IP 54.

- or -

An operating voltage of 24 V DC ±20 % according to IEC 742 (functional extra-low

voltage). The max. power consumption of the ISD is 0.4 A per unit.

2. ISD with heater:

An operating voltage of 24 V DC +20 %/-5 % according to IEC 742 (functional extra-

low voltage). The max. power consumption of the ISD is 2.5 A per unit.

The AMS 50 is not suitable for supplying units with integrated heater.

3. The following operating voltages for the connection module:

- AMV 50-013 (no. 1 017 137): 230 V AC ±10 % 50 Hz

- AMV 50-012 (no. 1 017 138): 115 V AC ±10 % 50/60 Hz

4. The following connection cables if the connection module is used:

- ISD 230: cable no. 2 013 568 (3 m)

- ISD 260/280: cable no. 6 010 474 (5 m) for function interfaces/power supply.

The data interface will not be connected via the connection module.

5. For each unit a connector cover no. 2 016 130 to match the enclosure rating IP 65.

6. A precise vehicle guidance system if the ISD is to be used in conjunction with rail-

based transportation systems (see T/R angle, Chapter 9 Technical data, Page 49)

3.2 Method of operation

The ISD systems each comprise two units with different carrier frequencies. Each of the

components contains an optical data transmitter and receiver as well as a bidirectional,

electrical data interface (Fig. 3-2).

With one pair of devices, data can be transmitter and received simultaneously, i.e. data

transfer is possible in both directions. Different carrier frequencies prevent mutual optical

interference.

The data levels pending at the electrical interface of a transmitter (input) are transferred

optically to the opposite station using the FSK modulation method. The receivers on the

other side then reconvert the optical signals to electrical data levels and output them via

the electrical data interface (output).

If you are using the RS 485 interface, both units are ready to receive (RR) in the idle

state

. The station which first receives data on the electrical interface determines the

direction of transmission until the data string has been transmitted. Both stations are

ready to receive again once transmission has been completed (automatic direction

switching). The data transfer rate must only be set on the ISD if you are using the

RS 485 interface.

The light path between the two units is monitored constantly. An LED on the front of each

unit signals interruptions in the light path and inadequate reception conditions. A

switching output, which is active when the light path is unobstructed (free), is provided in

addition to the LED.

Each of the device units in the ISD 230 system is also equipped with a switching output

which is deactivated under poor transmission conditions (e.g. lenses contaminated). The

transmitter on every unit can be deactivated via a switching input.

3.3.2 Function of the LEDs

Four LEDs indicate the operating status, the intensity of received signal on the light path

and data transmitting respectively receiving on the electrical interface. The LEDs (Fig. 3-3)

are located on the top of the housing and on the front. Table 3-4 shows the meaning of

the LEDs.

4.1 Installation sequence

4.2 Preparations

4.2.1 Configuring the units

Befor mounting the system, configure the units of ISD 230 as decribed in Chapter

5.1 ISD 230 system, Page 22 or the units of ISD 260/280 system as described in

Chapter 5.2 ISD 260 and ISD 280 systems, Page 33. Also prepare the electrical

connection.

4.2.2 Required components

• 2 units for each ISD system

4.2.3 Required accessories

• For each unit one angle bracket no. 2 013 824 or one three-point bracket

no. 5 306 369 (recommended)

Alternatively, if the bracket is supplied by the user:

- Stable mounting device that allows the alignment of the units to each other to be varied

in the x and y axes as well as the fine adjustment of the units. The weight of an unit is

approx. 1 kg without connection cable(s)

4.2.5 Selecting the mounting location

The system must be mounted in such a way that the straight line of vision between

the two units is unimpaired.

Aligne both units either vertically or horizonally.

Ensure that the adjustment aid (on the top) is easily accessible on both units.

If two ISD systems are operated in parallel, ensure that the units with the same carrier

frequency are mounted diagonally opposite one another.

If the connector cover is used, observe the longer dimensions in summary due to the

cover (see Fig. 10-3, Page 53).

Path length: 0.2 ... 150/180/200 m

Mount the units at an angle of 180° with respect to each other (Fig. 4-1).

The two large lenses must be directly opposite one another.

If the distance between any position on the mobile station and the fixed station is not

less than 3 m, both units can also be mounted in the same plane (device unit not

rotated through 180°).

Table 4-1 shows the transmitter and receiver aperture angle for a device unit. The light

spot diameter of the transmitter depending on the distcance is shown in Table 4-2.

The bracket can be mounted either directly with the rear plate (panel) or via the angled

flange on the mounting base using the 4 holes provided. The position of the holes and

dimensions of the three-point bracket are shown in Fig. 10-1, Page 52. Two reference

markings allow both brackets to be adjusted vertically and horizontally (x and y direction),

irrespective of the position of the angled flange (can be mounted on the other side of the

unit).

4.2.6 Mounting accessories

The units will be mounted at the transmitter/receiver stations using 3 movable running

nuts. On each longitudinal side there are two of them in a slot (see Fig. 3-1, Page 13). The

maximum depth of engagement in the nuts is 10 mm from the surface of the housing. The

location and dimensions of the nuts are shown in Fig. 9-1, Page 50.

An unit can be mounted using the SICK brackets:

• angle bracket no. 2 013 824

• three-point bracket no. 5 306 369

Three-point bracket

The three-point bracket facilitates mounting and alignment of the units. A separate bracket

is required for each unit (Fig. 4-2).

4.3 Mounting and adjusting the system

4.3.1 Mounting the ISD on the three-point bracket

Risk of damage to the housing!

The maximum depth of engagement of the two nuts M 5 is 10 mm from housing surface.

Longer screws will damage the housing.

Use screws with the correct length.

1. Prepare the two three-point brackets for either vertical (angled flange left or right) or

horizontal (angled flange top or bottom) mounting.

2. Ensure that the movable plate is parallel to the fixed plate on each bracket before they

are mounted (if necessary correct the position with the lock nuts using for the fine

adjustment).

3. Align both three-point bracket to each other straight to the eye. The system must be

mounted in such a way that the straight line of vision between the two units is

unimpaired.

4. Attach the two brackets at the required height with the four screws (M 6 x 12 mm) and

washers supplied using the angled flange or the fixed plate. Use the reference

markings as reference points with respect to the common reference (floor). Ensure

that the two brackets are aligned horizontally (devices must be in the same axis).

5. Carefully insert a unit into each bracket. The two top screws on the rear of the housing

facing the cover (optical adjustment aid) must fit into the locking holes of the movable

plate so that the bottom of the device (connector) is flush with the bracket (Fig. 4-3).

Check: the reference marking (horizontal) must be at the same height as the two glass

lenses.

6. Secure the units to the brackets with the three screws M 5 x 10 mm and washers. To

do so, move the running nuts.

You can then perform a fine adjustment in the horizontal and vertical planes using the

three lock nuts (self-locking).

7. Align the units as described in Chapter 4.3.3 Alignment of the ISD.

Device units in fixed and mobile stations (variable link)

For large distances the units have to be mounted in such a way, that in case of vibrations

the cone of IR light will reach the receiver area in the opposite station (fixed) in the middle

(and the same in the other direction). The vibrations can be caused by accelerating and

stopping the mobile station.

Prefer to mount both units vertically using the angled flange or the fixed plate of the

three-point brackets. With a stabil base this position provides an operation poor of

vibrations.

If the units can only be mounted horizontal (due to small place in the locations), use the

4 drilling holes on the fixed plate of the three-point bracket.

4.3.2 Mounting the AMS 50 Connection Module

Mount the connection modules near the units. The maximum distance between the

AMS 50 and an unit should not exceed 10 m, in particular when using the ISD 230 with

the RS 232 data interface.

4.3.3 Alignment of the ISD

Optical adjustment aid

The optical alignment aid facilitates exact alignment of the devices. Crosshairs, which can

be used to focus on the opposite unit, are visible in the opening at the top of the device

(Fig 4-4). At large distances, it also may be useful to attach a torch (with a tape) to the

opposite unit.

The units should be only be aligned (in particular when using the optical adjustment aid)

when the ISD system is switched off.

This is the only way to prevent direct eye contact with the IR beam (eye protection).
