d’inconfort, voire d’eets secondaires.

1.3. Safety precautions
A number of safety precautions are necessary before using
Homelight® in order to avoid undesired side effects:
Do not use Homelight® on dark skin. Treating dark skin with
Homelight® can lead to side effects such as burns, blisters or changes
to skin colour (hyper- or hypo-pigmentation).
Do not use Homelight® on skin which is tanned or has recently been

exposed to the sun!
Do not expose yourself to sunlight without protection:
- during the 4 weeks prior to treatment with Homelight®
- during the 2 weeks following treatment with Homelight®
“Exposing yourself to sunlight without protection means exposing
yourself to direct sunlight for a continuous period of fifteen minutes
or exposing yourself to indirect sunlight continuously for an hour.
• I f you are exposed to sunlight, you must use adequate protection,
such as a garment or sunscreen (with SPF over 50), which must be
used regularly for the 3 weeks before and after treatment.
Warning: You must also follow exactly these same instructions if you
are exposed to UV light on a sunbed.
Do not use Homelight® if you have applied any self-tanning cream
to your skin. You should allow for the tanning effect of the cream to
disappear completely before using Homelight®.
Do not use Homelight® on or around your eyes as this can cause
serious eye injuries. Homelight® is not suitable for depilating
eyelashes and eyebrows. Never look directly into the light pulses.
Keep Homelight® well away from your eyes!
Do not treat the same area of skin more than once per session! Do
not overlap the light pulses!
If any burns or blisters appear, stop using Homelight® immediately!
Ensure you cover up any birthmarks, tattoos, sun spots, freckles,
birthmarks, warts or growths before using the Homelight® depilator.
• Shave the treatment area before using Homelight®
• Ensure your skin is clean before using Homelight®.
Do not use Homelight® on your scrotum, vagina, labia minora, anus,
nipples, areolas, inside ears or inside your nose.
Do not use Homelight® on any part of the body where you may wish
hair to grow at a later stage.

Do not use Homelight® for any purpose other than depilation.
Never point the application surface of Homelight® to send a light
pulse into an open space. Only aim the treatment surface towards
the skin. The application surface must be in full contact with the
surface of the skin before releasing a light pulse.
Warning: hot surfaces. Do not touch the lens of the special face
filter or the application surface of Homelight® with your fingers. You
should also ensure you keep the special face filter and the application
surface of Homelight® clean. Please check the chapter about cleaning
your Homelight® depilator.
Never use flammable liquids such as alcohol (including perfume,
deodorant or any other substance containing alcohol) or acetone to
clean the skin before using Homelight®.
Keep Homelight® out of reach of children. Do not use Homelight® on
children and do not allow children to use Homelight®.
Stop using Homelight® immediately if you notice any abnormality or
if Homelight® displays any fault or emits any unusual noise or odour.
Stop using Homelight® immediately if the flash bulb has any cracks
or marks on it, or if the application surface is broken. Contact BaByliss
Customer Services.
Stop using Homelight® when the On/Off indicator light turns red and
unplug the adapter from the socket.
Do not attempt to open or repair Homelight® yourself. Opening
Homelight® yourself can expose you to dangerous electrical
components and to the pulsed light energy, which can cause serious
personal injuries and/or irreversible damage to your eyes.
Please contact Homelight® Customer Services if Homelight® is
broken, damaged or needs repair.
2. How Homelight® works
Homelight® from BaByliss is a personal depilator that uses IPL (intense
pulsed light) for easy and sustained removal of unwanted hair that will
not grow back.
G945-G946E IB 1.indd 40 02/06/2015 11:31 AM
41
EN
2.1. IPL technology
Using IPL technology, Homelight® painlessly removes hair by emitting
pulsed light. The pulsed light targets the pigment present in the
hair (melanin) to get through to the root and prevent the hair from
growing back. Therefore, the more melanin the hair contains (i.e. the
darker the hair colour), the more light the hair can absorb and the
more conclusive the results will be. IPL technology has been used
widely by professionals for more than 15 years and clinical studies
have proven that it is effective and safe.
2.2. Hair growth cycle
The hair growth cycle plays a key part in the process of IPL depilation
using Homelight®. Therefore, it is important to understand how the
full hair growth cycle works in order to achieve lasting results with
Homelight®.
The hair growth cycle consists of three successive phases:
• Anagen (hair growth phase)
• Catagen (hair transition phase)
Telogen (hair resting phase)
18 to 24
months

Anagen

Telogen
(hair resting phase)
The full hair growth cycle lasts on average between 18 and 24 months.
Most hairs are in one of the two resting phases (catagen and telogen).
Homelight® has no effects on hairs in resting phases. Homelight® is
effective, however, on hairs in the growth phase (anagen). Therefore,
multiple depilation sessions with Homelight® are required to be
effective on all of the hairs and to achieve lasting results.
2.3. Planning depilation sessions with Homelight®
You should plan your depilation sessions with Homelight® beforehand!
We recommend you follow the following schedule which has
delivered excellent results:
The first 4 depilation sessions with Homelight® should be 2 weeks
apart.
The following depilation sessions with Homelight® should be 4 weeks
apart (until the desired result is achieved).

Note:
Treating the same area more than once in a two-week period does
not improve results and risks having undesired effects.
It is recommended that you use Homelight® with moderation, i.e.
not repeating the treatment with Homelight® indefinitely. A full
treatment (7 to 8 depilation sessions in total) performed once every
year is sufficient for very satisfactory results.
N.B.: Hormonal factors and physiological changes can cause resting hairs
to become active. Maintenance depilation sessions with Homelight® can
be performed (with at least 4 weeks between the sessions).

2.5. Results to expect from depilation with Homelight®
The effectiveness of Homelight® can vary:
• from person to person,
• depending on the treatment area,
• depending on the colour of the hair.
Note: Homelight® is not effective on white, grey or light-blonde hair.
White, grey and light-blonde hair has a small melanin content so will
not respond sufficiently to pulsed light treatment using Homelight®.
N.B.:
- It is quite common for hair to seem to continue growing for one or two
weeks after a depilation session with Homelight® (this is called ejection).
However, after two weeks you will see these hairs fall out or detach
themselves from the follicles. We advise you against pulling hairs to
make them detach. Let hairs fall out naturally.
- It is possible for some hairs to grow back lighter and ner than before,

following a depilation session with Homelight®. This phenomenon has
been extensively documented by beauticians and doctors who use
pulsed light devices for depilation treatments.

3. Before using Homelight®
3.1. Selecting the level of intensity
Homelight® features 5 levels of intensity, running from the lowest
(level 1) to the highest (level 5). The level of intensity indicates
the intensity of the pulsed light applied to the skin when using
Homelight®.
To select the required level of intensity for your own skin, follow these
steps:
A. Which phototype are you
To select the required level of intensity to use Homelight®, it is
important that you work out your phototype (skin type) using the
removable intensity selection guide. The removable intensity selection
guide shows the different phototypes (phototypes I to VI) and the
levels of intensity of Homelight® recommended for each phototype.
The removable intensity selection guide is easy to detach from the
device and can be held up against the skin to determine your skin’s
phototype.

EN
N.B.:
• We recommend that you hold the removable intensity selection guide
against an area such as the back of your wrist (because this is an area of
the body which is usually darker as it is exposed to the sun more).
• If in doubt between two phototypes, choose the darker one.
Note: In order to use Homelight® safely, the removable intensity
selection guide absolutely must be used in conjunction with the
instructions given in this instruction manual. Selecting the wrong level
of intensity can lead to side effects.

B. Performing a test with Homelight®
48 hours before the first use, you should perform a test with
Homelight® on one leg (a few light pulses), selecting intensity level 1
regardless of your skin type.
C. Select the required level of intensity for your phototype
If your skin responds to the test correctly, and if you have still not
experienced any abnormal reaction or discomfort after 48 hours
following the test, you can gradually increase the level of intensity of
your Homelight® during subsequent depilation sessions in line with
the following guide:
For people with phototype I:
• First session:
- set Homelight® no higher than intensity level 1.
• Second and third sessions:
- if you did not experience any particular discomfort or pain
during the previous session, you can set intensity level 2
for the second session and intensity level 3 for the third
session.
• Fourth session and subsequent sessions:
- only if there have been no side effects whatsoever resulting
from the previous session, you can set intensity level 4
for the fourth session and intensity level 5 for subsequent
sessions.
For people with phototype II or III:
• First session:
- set Homelight® no higher than intensity level 1.
• Second session:
- if you did not experience any particular discomfort or pain
during the previous session, you can set intensity level 2.

N.B.:
It is possible you may notice some dierent skin colours on your body,
because dierent areas of the body are exposed to sunlight in dierent
amounts. For example, skin on the arms, which are generally exposed to
the sun more, is darker than skin on the armpits. However, you are advised
against increasing the level of intensity to use Homelight® on lighter
areas of skin on your body. Increasing the level of intensity for the lighter
areas of skin on your body may give better results, but it also increases the
likelihood of discomfort and even side eects.
3.2. Preparing the skin
Before you use Homelight®, your skin must be shaved (24 hours
beforehand), clean, dry and free from any residue of powder or
deodorant.
Warning: do not epilate (with an electric epilator, tweezers or waxing)
before using Homelight®. Epilating (removing hair from the root)
would prevent intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment from having any
effect.
3.3. Installation and start-up
1. Plug the adapter cord into the socket on the Homelight® device
(which is located on its handle).
2. Plug the other end of the adapter into a power socket. The ON/OFF
LED indicator will light up orange.
