Pen Display
Functionality
The Sympodium Interactive Pen Display is a presentation device that interfaces with a computer
and displays the computer images on a projector screen so that they can be viewed by your entire
class. Computer applications can be launched and controlled using the tethered stylus pen which
acts like a mouse. The pen also enables you to annotate, or draw, in digital ink over any application
on the interactive screen and to save these notations using SMART Notebook software for later
dissemination to your audience.

Setting up the Sympodium
The Sympodium is connected to a computer by a VGA cable and a USB cable, and to a data
projector by a VGA cable
Ensure that both the Sympodium and computer are switched off before connecting them
Press the power button on the top right of the Sympodium and the power indicator button
should be illuminated orange
Switch on the computer and the power indicator button should turn blue which shows that
the unit is in active mode and is receiving a video signal from the computer. If the indicator
remains orange check the cables are connected correctly
Using the Sympodium

Returns pen to mouse mode Selects digital ink colours Erases digital ink
Press the mouse mode button to allow the stylus pen to function as a mouse. By touching
the screen with the pen you will be able to control computer applications
To write over your desktop image in digital ink simply press either the black, blue, or red
pen-tool button
To erase your notes, select the eraser pen-tool button and move the pen in a smooth motion
over your notes
Pressing the mouse button at any time will return the pen to mouse mode

contact a right-click Launches Capture toolbar contact a right-click
Right mouse buttons two are provided to facilitate ease of use for both left and right
handed users. When this button is pressed the next pen contact will be a right-click.
Subsequent touches will register as a left-click
On-screen keyboard selecting this button will launch a virtual keyboard that floats over
your active application and lets you enter typed text at the cursor location. This facilitates
editing directly onto documents
Notebook software this application helps you organise, save and share your notes
Capture toolbar this button launches a set of tools that can be used to capture an on-
screen image and insert it into Notebook software. (How to capture notes/images: Press
Capture toolbar button and select Area Capture option. Touch the display with the stylus
pen and without releasing pressure, drag the selection box to outline the area you want to
capture. Notebook software will open automatically and display your notes on a new
Notebook page, which you can then save as a Notebook file)
Floating tools this button launches a virtual palette of the tools you are most likely to use.
It is possible to customise the floating toolbar by selecting from a variety of features such as:
Magnifer; Shapes; text Spotlight etc

The Sympodium is easy to use and enables the user to effectively show the important
features of a particular application or database by allowing on-screen highlighting and
annotation
The Sympodium can interface with other peripherals, such as a document visualiser, or
external memory device, via a USB port
