1. INTRODUCTION
Trainer mode (buddy-box system) is an excellent aid for be-
ginners to radio control technology, and especially for learning
the art of controlling a model aircraft. An experienced modeller on
the Teacher transmitter can take control of the model at take-off
or immediately resume control in any critical situation, thereby
minimising the risk to life and limb during the newcomer’s first
attempts at flying. Trainer mode represents a much simpler, safer
method of making a start in our fascinating hobby.
2. APPLICATION
With the Trainer adaptor for ZEBRA transmitters, # 8 5128, you
can operate your ZEBRA transmitter (e.g. ZEBRA 3FM, 4FM,
4FM pro) as the Pupil unit for Teacher/Pupil operations.
The Trainer adaptor for ZEBRA transmitters can be connected
either to the MULTIPLEX Trainer lead, # 8 5121, or to the
MULTIPLEX Trainer lead with right-angle plug at the Pupil end,
# 8 5118.
Compatible Teacher transmitters are the current MULTIPLEX
COCKPIT SX, ROYALevo 7, 9 and 12 transmitters, and also the
PROFI mc 3000/4000.
The Teacher transmitter has primary control of the model. This
means that the radio link and all the necessary settings for con-
trolling the model (such as direction of servo rotation, servo tra-
vels and mixer settings) are defined at the Teacher transmitter.
The Pupil transmitter supplies the stick signals only, and only
when control has been passed to him from the Teacher trans-
mitter.
! Note: suitability of different ZEBRA transmitters for Trai-
ner mode operations
The ZEBRA 2AM transmitter cannot be used as a Pupil trans-
mitter. ZEBRA transmitters cannot be used as the Teacher trans-
mitter.
3. USING THE SYSTEM FOR THE FIRST TIME
1. Give the batteries in the ZEBRA transmitter and the Teacher
transmitter a full charge.
2. The transmission channel of the Teacher transmitter must
match that of the receiver in the Pupil’s model (crystal).
3. To use the ZEBRA transmitter as the Pupil transmitter:
set all the trims to centre
switch any mixers off
4. Important: you must remove the transmitter crystal!
Remove the crystal from the ZEBRA transmitter, and
store it in a safe place where it will not be subjected to
mechanical shock.
Note:
Since both transmitters must be switched on permanently
during Trainer mode operations, a crystal in the ZEBRA
transmitter would cause a channel clash, and it would not be
possible to control the model.
5. Connect the Trainer adaptor for ZEBRA transmitters to the
end of the Trainer lead marked “Schüler” (Pupil).
When inserting the connector take care to orientate it
correctly (index lug). Do not use force, and never try to
insert it the wrong way round!
6. Connect the barrel plug on the Trainer adaptor for ZEBRA
transmitters to the socket of your ZEBRA transmitter intended
for the Trainer lead.
7. Connect the end of the Trainer lead marked “Lehrer” (Tea-
cher) to the multi-function socket of the Teacher transmitter.
8. Prepare the Teacher transmitter for Trainer mode operations
as described in the Operating Instructions supplied with the
Teacher transmitter.
! Note: possible transfer of individual control functions
to the ZEBRA transmitter
Whether you can transfer individual selected control functions
to the ZEBRA transmitter, or whether all control functions
have to be transferred at once, depends on the facilities pro-
vided by the Teacher transmitter.
9. The next step involves testing all the control functions on the
model (caution: motor will run; secure model carefully!):
first switch the Teacher transmitter ON
next switch the ZEBRA Pupil transmitter ON
now switch the receiver ON
10. Test the system by transferring the control functions from the
Teacher transmitter to the Pupil transmitter, and vice versa.
If you notice a discrepancy between the servo neutral posi-
tions, or the motor bursts into life when you transfer control to
the Pupil transmitter, adjust the trims on the ZEBRA trans-
mitter to correct the problem. Repeat the test procedure until
no changes in the neutral positions occur when you switch
from Teacher to Pupil transmitter, and vice versa.
The Teacher transmitter must be set up accurately to suit
the model in terms of servo travel, servo directions, etc.
Bear in mind at all times that the Teacher transmitter
must be able to control every aspect of the model!
11. Switch the RC system OFF after the tests and after the flight:
first switch the receiver OFF
next switch the ZEBRA Pupil transmitter OFF
now switch the Teacher transmitter OFF
! Note: settings before the next solo flight
Before the next solo flight, don’t forget to adjust the ZEBRA
transmitter’s settings to suit the model! This applies to trim posi-
tions, servo directions, mixers, fitting the crystal, …
! Note: practise Trainer mode operations thoroughly
Be sure to practise the operation of the Trainer system
before flying the model, so that you are sure the Teacher
knows how to resume control if an emergency occurs!
