1. OpenthesystemchassisandlocateanunusedPCIE3.0/2.0/1.0(x4,x8,x16)slot.
2. RemovethePCIEslotcover.
3. GentlyinserttheRocketRAID642LcontrollerintothePCIEslot,andsecurethebrackettothesystem
chassis.

4. Afterinstallingtheadapter,attachtheharddisksorbackplaneenclosuretothehostadapterusingthe
appropriatecables.
Note:Manyserverlevelchassisincludeharddrivehotswapbays.Forthesesystemchassis,cables

4.3 VerifyingInstallation
Oncethehostadapterandharddriveshavebeeninstalledintothechassis,bootupthesystemtoverify
thatthehardwareisproperlyrecognized.
1. Poweronthesystem.Ifthesystemdetectsthepresenceoftheadapter,theRocketRAIDBIOSUtility
willbedisplayedduringbootup.
2. Press“Ctrl+H”keycombinationtoaccesstheRocketRAID642Ladapter’sBIOSUtility.

Initialize ThiscommandisusedtopreparedisksforusewithRAIDarrays.Disksmustbe
initializedbeforetheycanbeusedtocreatearrays.

5.4 CreatingRAIDArrays
InitializingDisks:
Before creating a RAID array, the disks must be initialized. Disk initialization writes necessary RAID
configuration information to the hard disks. Select the Initialize command from the toolbar, and press
Enterkey.
Highlight the target disks using the arrow keys, then press the Enter key. A numeral will be displayed
beforeeachselecteddisk.Oncealltargetdiskshavebeenselected,pressESCkey.Theutilitywilldisplaya
warning,andaskyoutopressY(yes)toinitialize,orN(no)to
cancel.Onceinitialized,thesediskscanbe
usedtocreateRAIDarrays.Thesediskswillbedisplayedas“Initialized”(underStatus).
Warning:Initializationwilldestroyallpre‐existingdataontheselectedharddisks.Onlyinitialize
disksthatdonotcontaincriticaldata.
CreateArrays:
SelectCreatefromthetoolbarandpressEnterkey.
1. UsethearrowkeystoselecttheRAIDlevelandpressEnterkey.
2. UsethearrowkeystohighlighttheArrayNameoptionandpressEnterkey.Thearraynamedialogue

boxwillappear.UsethekeyboardtoinputanewArrayName,andpresstheEnterkey.

Note:TheArrayNamecommandisoptionalitisnotnecessarytonamethearray.Thearraycanbe
namedatalatertime,andthenameofthearraycanbechangedatanytime.
3. OntheCreatemenu,usethearrowkeysto highlight the SelectDevicesitem and pressEnterkey.A
devicelistwillappear,anddisplayallavailableharddiskdrives.
4. Highlightthetargetdisksthatyouwanttouse,andpressEnterkeytoselectthem.Anumeralwillbe
displayed before each selected disk. This number designates disk order. After all of the disks have
beenselectedandpresstheESCkeytoreturntotheCreateMenu.
5. Next,Usethe↓arrowkeytohighlighttheCapacity(GB)optionandpressEnterkey.Thetotal

availablecapacitywillbedisplayed.PressEnterkeyifyouwishtouseallavailablespace.Ifyouwishto
reservediskspaceforadditionalarrays/singledisks,usethekeyboardtoinputtheamountofspace(in
GB)youwishtosetasideforthisparticulararray,andpressEnterkey.
Note:Multiplearrayscanbecreatedusingthesamesetofharddiskdrives.TheCapacityoptionallows
youtosetasidediskspacethatbe usedtocreateanotherarray,setasasparedisk,orpartitionedto
actasasingledisk(bytheoperatingsystem).
6.ForredundantRAIDarrays(RAID5,50),selecttheCachePolicy:
WriteBackProvideshigherwriteperformanceforredundantRAIDarrays.Dataisatriskwhenthere
isapowerfailure,systemkernelpanicandunrespondingabnormalconditions.
WriteThroughWritesdirectlytothedisks(mayreducetheriskofdatalossduringacriticalfailure,
butatthecostoflowerperformance).

7. SectorSizeAlsoknownas“VariableSectorSize”.Usethisoptionifyouareusinganolder32bit
Windowsoperatingsystem.Thisallowsolderoperatingsystemstosupportvolumesover2TBin
size.Donotuseiftheoperatingsystemalreadysupportslargevolumes(suchasGPT).
8. Tocompletethecreationprocedure,usethearrowkeytohighlighttheStartCreationitemand
pressEnterkey.
TheWindowwillshow2optionsifcreateRAID5:BackgroundInitializeandNoinitialization.
Background TheRAIDarrayisaccessiblewhilediskinitializationisbeingperformed.
Initialization: Thisoptionwilldeleteallcontentonthedisks.
Theinitializationtimewillbelongerwhencomparedto"Foreground"butthe
logicaldrivescanbeusedduringtheinitializationprocess.
