1Introduction
This operating manual will explain how easy it is to use the device. Please take the time to read this
handbook through carefully and keep it in the vehicle in case any questions should arise later on. Please
ensure that this handbook is handed on to the next owner if you sell your car or the device.

3General operation
3.1 Operation during the trip
The demands on today's roads invariably demand the driver's total concentration.
3.2 Switch ON/OFF
The device is switched on by pressing the setting knob or by turning on the vehicle ignition. The
station previously set is played back at the switching on volume saved (see below).
The device is switched off by pressing the setting knob again or by turning off the vehicle ignition.
3.3 Audio source selection
By repeatedly pressing the button, you are able to select the desired audio sources the
sequence of FM1, FM2, MW1, MW2, CD, AUX-IN or USB. After an initial run, the selection begins again
with FM1. CD and USB will only be displayed as a possible selection when a CD has been inserted or a
device has been connected to the USB socket.
If a CD has been inserted or a device connected to the USB socket, the respective audio source is
selected automatically and the playback begins.
3.4 Audio settings
Setting the volume
− When the radio is switched on, turn the control knob to the left to reduce the playback volume or
to the right to increase the playback volume.
During the setting, the value "VOL1...32" or "VOL MIN" or "VOL MAX" are shown in the display.
Setting the bass
− Keep pressing the button briefly until "BASS" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob
to set the bass.
During the setting, the value "BASS+6...-6" is shown in the display. If no settings are made, the device
leaves the audio setting menu automatically after a short period.
Setting the treble
− Keep pressing the button briefly until "TREB" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob to
set the treble.
During the setting, the value "TREB+6...-6" is shown in the display. If no settings are made, the device
leaves the audio setting menu automatically after a short period.
Setting the balance
− Keep pressing the button briefly until "BAL" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob to
set the volume arrangement to the left/right.
During the setting, the value "BAL LEFT 6...RIGHT 6" or "CENTER" are shown in the display. If no settings
are made, the device leaves the audio setting menu automatically after a short period.
CAUTION!
● Ensure your attention is primarily focussed on driving. Distraction of the driver can result in
accident and injuries.
● Do not let adjusting or use of the device distract you from the traffic situation.
● Only use the device if road, weather and traffic conditions allow and you will not be
distracted from driving.
● Set the volume such that signals outside the car, e. g. police and fire service klaxons, are
clearly audible at all times.

Setting the fading
− Keep pressing the button briefly until "FADE" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob
to set the volume arrangement to the front/rear.
During the setting, the value "FRONT 6...REAR 6" or "CENTER" are shown in the display. If no settings
are made, the device leaves the audio setting menu automatically after a short period.
Setting the switching on volume
When switching on the device, the audio source selected is always played back with the switching on
volume saved. The factory setting (VOL 6) can be changed as follows:
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu SET ONVOL appears in the display. Turn the
control knob to set the switching on volume.
During the setting, the value "VOL1...32" or "VOL MIN" or "VOL MAX" are shown in the display. If no
settings are made, the device leaves the setting menu automatically after a short period.
Beware!
● Do not press the knobs and buttons of the device too hard to prevent causing damage to it. A light
push of the button is sufficient to operate the device.
● Do not open the device. There is nothing inside the device that can be repaired by the user.
● Use a soft and dry cloth to clean the device. Never use rough cloths, thinner, petroleum, alcohol, etc.
With intensive dirt, use a lightly moistened dry cloth to wipe the dirt away carefully.
● Never insert foreign objects (screwdriver, penknife, metal objects, etc.) into the openings of the
device as these may damage the device. Such damage is not covered by the guarantee.
4Radio operation
4.1 Operating the radio
Change the frequency range
The frequency ranges of FM and MW can be received by the radio. By repeatedly pressing the
button, the desired frequency range can be selected. The frequency range is shown in the display.
Automatic station scanning
Press or to start an automatic station scan to the next or the previous station on the same
frequency range. "SEARCH" is shown in the display during the station scan. Only those stations with a
strong reception will be offered.
Manual station scan
The frequency of the desired station can be set by turning the setting knob to the left or tot he right.
The frequency is shown in the display.
Search frequency range (SCAN)
By pressing the setting knob the station scan is started in the current frequency range. During the
search, "SCAN" is shown in the display and all stations that have a good reception are each played for
approximately 8 seconds. For selecting the current station being played and to stop the station scan, the
setting knob must be pressed again.
Saving radio stations
You can save 12 FM and 12 MW stations. There are 2 memory levels (FM1/FM2 or MW1/MW2), each
with 6 memory pre-sets available for each frequency range.
A radio station is saved as follows:
− Select the desired frequency range (FM or MW) and the memory level (1 or 2) by repeatedly pressing
the button .
− Set the station to be saved using the automatic or manual station scan.
− Keep the desired station button ... pressed until the signal sounds. Any stations previously
saved on this station button will be lost.
The radio station is saved and the station button assigned.

Calling-up a saved radio station
− For calling-up a saved station, select the respective frequency range (FM or MW) and the memory
level (1 or 2) by repeatedly pressing the button .
− The saved station is selected by briefly pressing one of the six station buttons ... .
4.2 Traffic announcement function
If the traffic announcement function is activated, all traffic announcements made by the "traffic
announcement station" are played during the running operation. The audio operation is interrupted for
the period of the announcement.
In no "traffic announcement station" can be received temporarily when the traffic announcement function
is activated, "NO TP, TA" is shown in the display.
You can activate or deactivate the traffic announcement function in the settings menu.
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu (SET ONVOL) appears in the display. Keep
pressing the button briefly until "TA ON" or "TA OFF" is shown on the display. Turn the control
knob for activating or deactivating the traffic announcement function. Save the settings by
pressing the button again.
When the traffic announcement function is activated, traffic announcements are always played back
using the saved volume, irrelevant which volume is currently set. You can set the playback volume for
traffic announcements in the settings menu.
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu (SET ONVOL) appears in the display. Keep
pressing the button briefly until "TA VOL 6...32" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob
to set the playback volume. Save the settings by pressing the button again.
4.3 RDS (Radio Data System)
RDS (Radio Data System) is used to transfer the programme identification and additional services and,
amongst others, enables "automatic station tracking" with FM radio operation. The automatic station
tracking function makes sure that the radio station that belongs to the frequency that provides the best
possible reception is always changed automatically during the trip.
Automatic frequency change
By default, during the trip, the automatic station tracking function always changes to the frequency of
the radio station that currently provides the best possible reception. Under certain circumstances, this
may lead to a regional station being interrupted when, on the short or long-term, another radio station of
the set radio station provides better reception on another frequency.
You can activate or deactivate the automatic frequency change function in the settings menu.
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu (SET ONVOL) appears in the display. Keep
pressing the button briefly until "AF ON" or "AF OFF" is shown on the display. Turn the control
knob for activating or deactivating the automatic frequency change functions.
Setting the program type
Program type (PTY) designates the assignment of the station according to categories, e.g. news, classic,
pop. If a program type is selected, stations of the respective type are selected or the function is
deactivated.
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu (SET ONVOL) appears in the display. Keep
pressing the button briefly until "NO PTY" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob for
selecting the program type.

5CD operation
5.1 Preventive measures with laser devices
Laser devices are classified in the safety classes 1-4 according to DIN IEC 76 (CO) 6/ VDE 0837.
The CD player of this device corresponds with safety class 1.
The laser used in class 1 devices is low-energy or is shielded so that there is no risk when used for its
intended purpose.
5.2 Tips for CD operation and in using the CDs
To be able to guarantee a trouble free and high quality CD playback, only use clean CDs that do not have
scratches or are damaged.
Pick the data carrier up on the sides. Avoid finger prints on the data carrier.
Use a soft, non-fluffy cloth to clean the CDs. In doing so, wipe the CD in straight lines from the middle
to the outside. Intensive dirt can be removed using a commercially available CD cleaner or removed
using isopropyl alcohol.
Beware!
● Never use liquids such as petroleum, paint thinner or gramophone record cleaner otherwise damage
may be caused to the surface of the CD.
● Use only standard 12 cm CDs. 8 cm single CDs and irregular shaped CDs (so-called "Shape CDs")
should not be inserted. They may damage the CD drive.
● DVD-Plus, Dual Disc and Flip Discs are thicker than normal CDs and should also not be inserted.
● Insert the CD into the CD slot up until the automatic loading draws it in.
● Take care to insert the CD into the CD slot straight and right angled to the front of the device and to
remove it from the CD slot in the same way. If the CD jams, scratches could be caused that may make
the CD unusable.
● Write on the data carrier only using a suitable CD pen. Writing material that is not suited may damage
the material.
● Do not glue any labels or similar onto the data carrier as these may loosen, that will result in damage
being caused to the drive.
● Do not expose the CD to heat or direct sun irradiation.
● Always store unused CDs in a compartment intended for this purpose from the Volkswagen
accessory programme or in the original CD cover.
● When removing the CD, take care that it does not fall down resulting in the surface being scratched.
Note
● Under certain circumstances, you may not be able to playback CDs with copy protection and self-
made CD-R and CD-RW CDs or the playback is limited.
● Observe the legal guidelines for copyright that apply in your country.
CAUTION!
● The CD player is a class 1 laser product. If you should open the CD player, there is a risk of
injuries caused by non-visible laser radiation.
● The CD player is not fitted with any parts that you can maintain or repair. For this purpose,
refer only to a specialist company when a mechanical defect occurs or the CD player has to
be repaired.

5.3 Operating the CD operation
Inserting the CD
− Insert a 12 cm audio CD into the CD slot with the printed side facing upwards until it is
automatically drawn in.
The device switches to CD operation automatically and starts the playback.
The CD operation can be ended at any time by pressing and you can switch to another audio
source.
Ejecting the CD
− Press the button to move an inserted CD to the removal position.
If the CD is not removed from the device within ten seconds, it is drawn back into the device
automatically to protect it against damager.
Even when the device is deactivated, a CD can be ejected to the removal position by pressing the
button.
Select the CD track
− Turn the setting knob or press the button or .
The number of the current track selected is shown in the display.
Fast forwards/backwards skipping
− Keep the button or pressed to search through the current track being played with fast
forwards/backwards skipping.
− Let go of the respective button when the position of the track has been reached.
SCAN function
The SCAN function is started and stopped by briefly pressing the setting knob.
When the SCAN function is activated, all tracks of a CD are played back for approx. 8 seconds. For
selecting a track, end the SCAN function when the track is being played.
The activated SCAN function is shown on the display as SCAN.
Repeating the track
If the track repeat button is pressed when a music track is being played, this title will continue to
be repeated until the button is pressed again to end it.
The activated track repeating function is shown on the display as RPT.
Random play
The random play is started with the button. When the random play function is activated, all
tracks of a CD are played back in a random order.
The random play is ended by pressing the button again. The random play function is also
stopped by starting the SCAN function, the track repeat or the fast forwards/backwards skipping.
The activated random play function is shown on the display as RDM.
Pause button
The playback of a track can be interrupted temporarily by pressing the button.
By pressing the button, the playback will be resumed.

6MP3/WMA operation
MP3 and WMA music tracks that are saved on CDs, USB memory sticks, MP3 playback devices or
iPod
®
, can be played using the device.
6.1 MP3/WMA operation
MP3/WMA track playback
Playback of MP3 or WMA music tracks is started when an USB memory stick or a CD is inserted or after
selecting an MP3/WMA audio source CD, AUX-IN or USB using the button .
Select folder with MP3/WMA track
− Press the button to skip to the next folder saved.
− Press the button to skip back to the previous folder.
Select an MP3/WMA track
− Turn the setting knob or press the button or .
When you turn the setting knob to the left, you return to the previous track. Turn the setting knob
to the right, you skip to the next track.
When selecting an MP3/WMA music title using the setting knob , all tracks saved can be selected.
The selection is not limited to the current folder.
Fast forwards/backwards skipping
− Keep the button or pressed to search through the current track being played with fast
forwards/backwards skipping.
− Let go of the respective button when the position of the track has been reached.
SCAN function
The SCAN function is started and stopped by briefly pressing the setting knob.
When the SCAN function is activated, all tracks of the current folder are played back for 10 seconds. For
selecting a track, end the SCAN function when the track is being played.
The activated SCAN function is shown on the display as SCAN.
Repeating the track
During the playback of an MP3 or WMA music file, the track repeat can be started by briefly pressing
the button. The current track is repeated until the button of the track repeat function is
pressed again to end it.
If the track repeat function is started by keeping the button pressed longer, then all tracks saved
in the current folder will continue to be repeated until the button of the track repeat function is
pressed again to end it.
The activated track repeating function is shown on the display as RPT.
The track repeat function is also stopped by starting the SCAN function, the random play function or the
fast forwards/backwards skipping.
Random play
The random play is started by briefly pressing the button. When the random play function is
activated, all tracks of all folders are played in a random order.
If the random play function is started by keeping the button pressed longer, then all tracks saved
in the current folder will continue to be played in a random order.
The random play is ended by pressing the button again. The random play function is also
stopped by starting the SCAN function, the track repeat or the fast forwards/backwards skipping.
The activated random play function is shown on the display as RDM.
Pause button
The playback of a track can be interrupted temporarily by pressing the button.
By pressing the button again, the playback will be resumed.

6.2 Tips on the USB socket
Beware!
● Connect only an USB memory stick, MP3/WMA playback device or an iPod
®
to the USB socket.
Computers should not be connected!
● Use only certified USB memory.
● MP3/WMA playback devices or iPod
®
devices must be turned off before connecting to the USB
socket.
● To prevent damage being caused, devices already connected should be removed from the USB
socket before starting the engine. Otherwise, the device connected may be damaged by the voltage
peak resulting from the starting.
● Using the button , swap to another audio source or turn the radio off before you remove a
device from the USB socket.
Note
● This device is suitable for reading USB memory using the read/playback report 1.1 and 2.0. Ensure
that the read report of your USB memory is compatible with the read report of the device.
● As a result of the continual development and the versatility of the USB memory, the function of this
device cannot be guaranteed with all USB memory types.
7Connecting external devices to the AUX/IN socket
The device has an AUX/IN socket on the front side for connecting external playback devices.
A commercially available connecting cable with a 3.5 mm stereo jack is required for the connection.
− To prevent overloading, reduce the playback volume of the external device to a low level before
connecting.
− Insert the connecting line of the external device in the AUX/IN socket .
− By repeatedly pressing the button, change to the audio source AUX-IN.
− Start the playback on the external device.
The audio functions can be set during the playback, as described in section 3.4. Further operations (start,
stop, forwards/reverse, etc.) must only be performed via the operating panel of the external device.
8Bluetooth
®
hands-free system
The integrated hands-free system of the radio is connected to the telephone via
Bluetooth
®
.
Before using the hands-free system, the connection between the hands-free system and the mobile
phone must be established once via a Bluetooth
®
radio connection (coupling). After coupling, the mobile
telephone is saved in the in the telephone list of the hands-free system and the hands-free system is
ready for use.
Only one mobile phone can be coupled to the hands-free system at a time. In doing so, the mobile
telephone as well as the Bluetooth
®
function on the mobile telephone must be switched on and all other
active Bluetooth
®
connections to other devices must have been separated. Simultaneous connection of
several mobile phones with the hands-free system is not possible.
Bluetooth
®
connecting data from up to 5 mobile telephones can be saved in the telephone list of the
hands-free system. After switching on the radio, a search is made for the mobile telephones saved. The
search function is indicated by the flashing symbol . Then the last mobile telephone connected is
searched for first always and then any other mobile telephones saved. The Bluetooth
®
connection is
established automatically to the first detected and listed mobile telephone.
When the ignition is turned on, the Bluetooth
®
connection between the hands-free system and the
detected and listed mobile telephone is also established when the radio is switched off. The radio
switches on automatically when an incoming call is registered and the call can be performed via the
hands-free system.

8.1 Establishing a Bluetooth
®
connection to the mobile telephone (coupling)
− Keep the button pressed until "PAIRING" appears in the display.
Then "KEY" is shown on the display with a 4 digit value. This 4 digit value is the password (PIN) required
for the Bluetooth
®
coupling.
− Activate the Bluetooth
®
function on the mobile telephone and start searching for Bluetooth
®
devices
in the surroundings. The mobile telephone presents a list of the devices found.
− Select "VW RADIO" on the mobile telephone.
− Confirm the Bluetooth
®
connection on the mobile telephone.
A password request appears on the mobile telephone.
− Enter the 4 digit value that is shown on the display of the radio. If an incorrect password has been
entered, the coupling process is cancelled and you have to select the "VW RADIO" device again in the
list of devices found
.
− Depending on the mobile telephone, a question may be asked if this Bluetooth
®
connection should
be established in the future without entering the password again. Confirm this request with "Yes" to
enable the Bluetooth
®
connection to be established automatically when turning on the radio.
First "PAIRED" is shown on the display of the radio and then "CONNECTED". The existing Bluetooth
®
connection is confirmed by an acoustic signal and is shown using the symbols on the display.
8.2 Separating a Bluetooth
®
connection to the mobile telephone
The Bluetooth
®
connection is separated automatically when the mobile telephone leaves the Bluetooth
®
reception range of the radio or the ignition is turned off.
The Bluetooth
®
can be manually separated in the following way:
− Keep the button pressed until "DISCONNECTED" appears in the display and the separation is
confirmed by an acoustic signal.
Using the button, the Bluetooth
®
connection can be re-established.
8.3 Private mode
If a call is made and the speech should not be conducted via the vehicles own sound system, the call
can be accepted by pressing the button two times after each other. The call will be conducted direct
on the mobile phone in private mode. The vehicle speakers and microphone of the hands-free system
are inactive.
The private mode can be quit using the button . The conversation can be continued via the hands-free
system.
8.4 Save caller numbers
An incoming number can be saved on each button ... .
− For saving an incoming caller number, when accepting the call or during the conversation press the
desired button ... until "NUMBER SAVED" is shown in the display.
The number is saved and the button ... used is assigned.

8.5 Select saved caller number
Telephone numbers saved in the radio can be dialled directly using the ... buttons.
− To be able to select a saved telephone number, press the button and then the corresponding
button ... that the desired telephone number has been assigned to. The telephone number
saved is shown in the display.
− If this is the desired telephone number, confirm the selection by pressing the button . The
connection is established.
− If this is not the desired telephone number, press another button ... until the desired
telephone number is shown in the display. Confirm the selection by pressing the button. The
connection is established.
8.6 Setting the playback volume of the hands-free system
Calls performed via the hands-free system are played using the saved volume via the vehicles
loudspeakers. The setting can be changed as follows:
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu (SET ONVOL) appears in the display. Keep
pressing the button briefly until "BT VOL" is shown on the display. Turn the control knob to set
the volume. Press the button to confirm the new settings.
During the call, the volume can be adjusted at any time using the control knob .
8.7 Bluetooth
®
Audio (Audio streaming)
With the Wireless communication interface "Bluetooth
®
Audio", the music that has been saved in your
telephone is played back via the radio.
To be able to use the "Bluetooth
®
Audio", the minimum prerequisite is that your mobile telephone must
support the Bluetooth
®
-Profile "Advanced Audio Distribution Profile" (A2DP). A2DP is used for wireless
transferring of Stereo-Audio-Signals in a high quality.
You can activate or deactivate the Bluetooth
®
Audio function in the settings menu.
− Keep the button pressed until the setting menu (SET ONVOL) appears in the display. Keep
pressing the button brief ly until "BT AUDIO ON" or "BT AUDIO OFF" is shown on the display. Turn
the control knob for activating or deactivating the Bluetooth
®
Audio function.
If a music track is started from a coupled mobile telephone, the playback is performed via the vehicle
speakers. "BT AUDIO ST" is shown in the display and the symbol flashes.
The audio functions can be set during the playback, as described in section 3.4.
The functions playback and pause must be operated from the keypad of the mobile telephone. Using
the and buttons of the radio, the fast forwards and backwards skipping can be operated.
When an incoming call is received, the music playback is interrupted for the period of the call and
continued after ending the call.
Note
● The Bluetooth
®
Audio function of many mobile telephones is not supported at all or has limited
support. A list of the mobile telephones supported can be found in internet under the homepage:

9Anti-theft coding
The anti-theft coding prevents the reactivation of the device electronically when the it is removed by
unauthorised persons.
If SAFE appears in the display for approx. 10 seconds immediately after turning on the device and the
1000 permanently, you have to enter the code number corresponding to the device to deactivate the
electronic lock.
Enter the code number
Turn the device on. SAFE appears in the display. "1000" appears in the display after three seconds.
Using each of the buttons ... , a decimal place of the four digit code number has been set.
The first digit of the code number is set using the button , the second digit with the button ,
etc.
If you have completed the entry correctly, keep the button pressed until the code acceptance has
been confirmed by an acoustic signal. Then the device is ready for operation.
Device card
The code number is printed on a device card together with the serial number that you will find in the
scope of supply. The card must be kept in a safe place. Never leave it in the vehicle. The device is only
useful for thieves if they also have the card!
Incorrect code number
If the incorrect code number is entered when unblocking the electronic lock, first SAFE appears flashing
in the display and then "1000" once again. Now the complete procedure can be repeated again. The
number of attempts is shown to the left in the display. If an incorrect code number is entered again, the
device is blocked for approx. one hour. This means that it cannot be put into operation. This block can be
recognised as SAFE and a small 2 to the left are shown permanently in the display. After one hour – the
device must remain switched on – the display goes out and you are able to unblock the electronic lock,
as previously described, once again. The cycle – two attempts, blocked for one hour – still applies.
