DESCRIPTION
The Single 4-Wire TO Access Module was designed for use in the Total Access
®
1500
Chassis. The 4W TO Access Module provides a voice grade 4-wire analog interface
between a VF transmission facility and the Total Access 1500 backplane. The 4W TO
Access Module generates no signaling, but in-band signaling tones that are part of
the data stream will be passed transparently.

One DC-isolated, 4-wire VF channel interface
Extended operating temperatures from 40ºC to +65°C
Transmission Level Point (TLP), transmit input and receive output ranges are
adjustable in 0.1 dBm increments
Supports loaded and non-loaded cable types
Supports Sealing Current Modes: None, Sink, or Source
Provisioning via the SCU ADMIN port or remote craft interface
Digital loopback and 1004 Hz, Digital Reference Signal (DRS) Tone Tests via the SCU
ADMIN port or remote craft interface
TURN-UP STEPS
Unpack the 4W TO Access Module and inspect it for damage. If damage has occurred,
file a claim with the carrier, then contact ADTRAN Customer Service.
Insert the 4W TO Access Module into any access-module slot on the Total Access 1500
as follows:
(a) While supporting the bottom edge of the circuit board, hold the 4W TO Access
Module by the front panel.
(b) Align the Access Module’s edge within the guide groove of the chassis.
(c) Insert the Access Module into the chassis until the edge connector seats firmly
into the chassis backplane.
(d) Lock the Access Module in place by pushing in on the locking lever.
Time Slot Assignments
The Total Access 1500 can automatically map DS0s in the T1s as determined by the
LIU operational configuration, or manual mapping is available via a local or remote
terminal interface. For default time slot assignments in the Dual T1 mode and in the
Quad T1 mode, refer to the Installation and Maintenance Practice, P/N 61180112L2-5.
Connections
Four 50-pin male amphenol connectors, (P1, P2, P3 and P4), on the rear of the Total
Access 1500 chassis provide the interconnect wiring for the shelf access modules
physical slots. The 4W TO Access Module uses P1 (T/R) and P2 (T1/R1) for the port 1
connections. For details, see Installation and Maintenance Practice, P/N
61180112L2-5.
Monitor the LEDs for operational status.
FRONT PANEL LED (PORT 1)
STATUS Green Port is operating normally
Yellow Port is in a menu controlled test
Red Port failure has been detected
Provision the 4W TO Access Module locally using the SCU ADMIN port.
Connect a VT100 compatible terminal to the common equipments DB-9 ADMIN port.
(The ADMIN port is used for provisioning, testing, and performance monitoring func-
tions.) Start the terminal emulation program. If using Windows HyperTerminal, open
by selecting Programs/Accessories/HyperTerminal. Login and navigate through
ADMIN port menu structure.
NOTE: To ensure proper display background, select VT100 Terminal Emulation under
settings.
Navigate through the menus to perform the desired function.

TEST OPTIONS
The 4W TO Access Module supports a Digital Network Loopback and 1004 Hz Tone
Tests to support circuit turn up and maintenance efforts. Test functions can be
activated locally via the ADMIN port on the SCU, or remotely via Telnet or SNMP.
Digital Network Loopback Test
The Digital Network Loopback test activates a loopback path that takes the DS0 data
received from the network and transmits it back to the network in the appropriate
ports transmit time slot.
1004 Hz Tone Test
The 1004 Hz Tone Test generates a 1004 Hz @ 0 dBm Digital Reference Signal (DRS)
tone, which is used to send DRS signal to the loop, the network, or to both
simultaneously.

COMPLIANCE
The 4W TO Access Module is NRTL listed to the applicable UL standards. This product is intended for
installation in a Type B or E enclosure in a Restricted Access Only area. The Total Access 1500 Shelf
Frame Ground terminal must be connected to an earth ground to ensure that the faceplate of the 4-
Wire TO Access Module is properly grounded via the backplane connector.
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC rules. Operation is subject to the following two
conditions:
(1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and
(2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired
operation.
Changes or modifications not expressly approved by ADTRAN could void the users authority to
operate this equipment.
