Important for the United Kingdom
This machine is fittedwith an approved moulded 13 Amp plug.
To change a fuse in thistype of plug, pleasefollow these
instructions.
a Take off the fusecover and take outthe fuse.
b Put in a new fusewhich should be a BS13623A, A.S.T.A.
or BSI approved type.
c Refit the fuse cover.
If the plug fittedis not suitablefor your socket,cut it off and fit
another type.
If the plug you fitcontains a fuse, it should be a 3Ampfuse. If
you fit a plug whichdoes not need a fuse,make sure the fuse
on your fuse boxis not greater than5 Amps.
DNote: Please destroy theplug you have cut offso that it
cannot be used in a 13Amp socket somewhereelse.
How to connect a plug
The wires in the leadfrom the video recorderare coloured as
follows.
* Blue - ’neutral’(’N’).
* Brown - ’live’(’L’).
d Connect the blue wire tothe terminal inthe plug which is
marked with theletter ’N’ or colouredblack.
e Connect the brown wireto the terminal inthe plug which
is marked withthe letter ’L’or coloured red.
f Do not connect either ofthe wires to theterminal in the
plug which is markedwith the letter’E’, the symbol\or
coloured green or green and yellow.
Before you refitthe plug cover, makesure that the gripat the
bottom of the plug isclamped over the plastic cover of the
lead, not just overthe two wires.
Connecting your video recorder to the
TV set
To install yourvideo recorder, youwill need to read one ofthe
following.
E If your TV sethas ’Easy Link’or ’NexTView’ - the
paragraph ’Connecting witha scart cable and EasyLink
or NexTView’.
E If your TV setdoes not have ’EasyLink’ or ’NexTView’-
the paragraph ’Connecting witha scart cable without
Easy Link orNexTView’.
E If you do not usea scart cable - theparagraph
’Connecting without a scartcable’.
Connecting with a scart cable and Easy link
or NexTView
Easy Link and NexTViewallow your video recorder to
exchange information withthe television. Please follow the
operating instructionsyou received with your television.
a Take the aerial cable plugout of your TV setand put it
into the 2 socket on the back of thevideo recorder.
b Plug one end of the aerialcable provided into the TV
socket on the videorecorder. Then plug theother end
into the aerial inputsocket on yourTV set.
c Plug one end of the scartcable provided intothe
AV1 EXT1 scart socket on theback of the video recorder.
Then plug the other end intothe scart socketon your
TV set.

d Switch on the TV set.
e Plug one end of the mainscable into the mainssocket
4 on the back of the video recorder. Then plugthe
other end into the wallsocket.
f Your video recorder willautomatically store all the
TV channels on your TV,in the same order.
This may takeseveral minutes.
When your video recorderhas stored all the information
it needs from yourTV (TV channels, language, country),
the following textwill appear on yourTV screen:
’EASY LINK LOADINGCOMPLETE’.
g Check that the timeand date on the video recorder
display are correct.If they are not, please read the
paragraph ’Setting thetime and date’ in thischapter.
Connecting with a scart cable without
Easy Link or NexTView
If your televisiondoes not have a scart (EURO-AV)socket,
please see the nextparagraph ’Connecting withouta scart
cable’.
a Take the aerial cable plugout of your TV setand put it
into the 2 socket on the back of thevideo recorder.
b Plug one end of the aerialcable provided into the TV
socket on the videorecorder. Then plug theother end
into the aerial inputsocket on yourTV set.
c Plug one end of the scartcable into the AV1 EXT1 scart
socket on the backof the video recorder.Then plug the
other end into the scartsocket on your TV set.
d Switch on the TV set.
e Plug one end of the mainscable into the mainssocket
4 on the back of the video recorder. Then plugthe
other end into the wallsocket.
f If your TV setautomatically switchesto a programme
number, a text willappear on your TV screen.
If not, selectyour programme asshown in the instruction
manual for your TVset.
Connecting without a scart cable
a Take the aerial cable plugout of your TV setand put it
into the 2 socket on the back of thevideo recorder.
b Plug one end of the aerialcable provided into the TV

f Tune in the TV set on theUHF wave band untilthis picture
appears.

Automatic tuning (autoinstall)
Your video recorder willsearch for all TV channels. It stores
the TV channels it findsin the following order: BBC 1, BBC2,
ITV, Channel 4, Channel5, Sky, others.
Tuning in your video recorder for the first
time
a If you have plugged theaerial into the videorecorder,
press the OK button on the remote control. Then follow
the instructionsbelow from stepe .
Tuning in your video recorder at other times
a Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
for the video recorder.
b Press the MENU button. The mainmenu will appear.
c Select the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
d Select the line ’AUTOINSTALL’with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
e Automatic tuning willstart. Thiscan take severalminutes.

Automatic TV channel store
(FOLLOW TV)
With this function,the video recorder stores the channelsin
the same order ason the TV set. Itonly works ifthe video
recorder (socket AV1 EXT1 ) and the TV set are connectedwith
a scart cable. You mustswitch off any equipment connected
to socket AV2 EXT2 .
DIf you are following theinstructions on page2 under
’Connecting with a scartcable and Easy Link or
NexTView’, thisfunction will startthe transfer of
information between theTV and the video recorder.
a Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
for the video recorder.
b Press the MENU button. The mainmenu will appear.
c Select the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
d Select the line ’FOLLOWTV’ with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
Check the message onthe TV screen.
e Press the OK button.
E If the video recorderrecognises that the TV set has been
connected with a scartcable, ’TV 01’ willappear on the
video recorder display.
E If ’NOTV’ (no signalfrom the TV set) appears on the video
recorder display,this means thatthe TV channels cannot
be tuned in automatically.In this case, please see
’Sorting and clearing TVchannels manually’.
f Select channel ’1’ on theTV set.
g Confirm with the OK button on the video recorder
remote control. The videorecorder will compare the
channel on the TV set andthe video recorder.
If the video recorderhas found the same channel as the
TV set, it willstore it as’P01’.
h Wait until, forexample, ’TV 02’appears.
i Select the next programmenumber on the TV set.
j Confirm with the OK button on the video recorder
remote control.

DIf you have selected the wrongTV channel, you can go
back a step withthe menu button Q .
k Repeat steps h to j until all TV channels have been
stored on the videorecorder.
l To end, press the MENU button.
Connecting a decoder or other equipment
You can also connect other equipmentto the AV2 EXT2 socket,
for example a decoder,satellite receiveror camera recorder.
And you can connect a hifiset to the sockets AUX OUTL R and
AUX IN LR .
Tuning in a decoder
With this function,your decoder will automatically tunein to
the TV programme youwant.
DIf you are following the instructionson page 2 under
’Connecting with a scartcable and Easy Link or
NexTView’, the decodermust be tuned in tothe TV set.
a Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
for the video recorder.
b On the video recorder,select the TV channelyou want to
tune in to the decoder,using the P ; or P = button or
the buttons 0-9 .
c Press the MENU button. The mainmenu will appear.
d Select the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
e Select the line ’MANUALSEARCH’ with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
f Select the line ’DECODER’with the menu buttons P =
or P ; .
g Select ’ON’ withthe menu buttons Q or P .
When you select ’OFF’,the function will be switched off.
h Confirm with the OK button.
DWhen the function is switchedon, ’DEC’ will appearin the
video recorder display.
i To end, press the MENU button.
Manual TV channel search
In some cases ’Automatictuning’ may not be able to find allof
the TV channels (forexample, coded TV channels).If this
happens, you can use thismanual method to tune in the rest of
the channels.
DIf you are following the instructionson page 2 under
’Connecting with a scartcable and Easy Link or
NexTView’, yourvideo recorder willautomatically load
the TV channels fromthe TV set. So thisinformation may
not be relevant.
a Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
for the video recorder.
b Press the MENU button. The mainmenu will appear.
c Select the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
d Select the line ’MANUALSEARCH’ with the menu buttons

j If you want tochange an automatic TV channel setting,
select the line ’FINETUNING’ and use the Q or P
button. Important:Fine tuning is onlynecessary in special
cases, for examplewhen there are stripeson the picture
with cable TV systems.
k Press the OK button to store the TV channel.
DIf you want to search forother TV channels, startagain
from step f.
l To end, press the MENU button.
Monitor function
You can switch backwardsand forwards between your
TV picture and video recorderpicture with the
MONITOR button. But thisonly works whenyou use a scart
cable to connect the videorecorder to your
TV set and your TVset responds tothis switchover.
Sorting and clearing TV channels manually
DIf you are following the instructionson page 2 under
’Connecting with a scartcable and Easy Link or
NexTView’ your videorecorder will automatically load
the TV channels fromthe TV set. So youcannot select
this function.
a Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
for the video recorder.
b Press the MENU button. The mainmenu will appear.
c Select the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
d Select the line ’TV CHANNELALLOCATION’ with the
menu buttons P = or P ; and confirm with the
P button.

or ’--:--’appears on the display,please follow these
instructions.

On-screen display (OSD)
With on-screen displaythe functions appear on the TV screen
as a menu. The mostimportant buttonsare shown at the
bottom of the screen.
E Call up the menu: withthe MENU button.
E Select a line: withthe P = or P ; button.
E Select within aline: with the menubuttons Q or P .
E Enter or change: withthe Q or P or with the 0-9
buttons.
E Store: with the OK button.
E Confirm: with the P button.
E Exit menu: with the MENU button.

in chapter 5.
Emergency interrupt
You can use the mSTANDBY button on the video recorderor
remote control tointerrupt any function.
So if you are havingoperating problems,you can just interrupt
the function and startagain. And you can practise operating
your video recorderwithout any worries.No matter which
buttons you press,you cannot damage it.
Important notes
E You can switch on withthe STOP h button,the
0-9 buttons or byputting in a cassette.
E Keep your video recorderconnected to the mainsat all
times so thatit can make programmedrecordings and the
television worksnormally. Your video recorder usesless
than 4 Wattsin energy-savingmode.
E When the video recorderis not plugged intothe mains, it
will usually storeTV channels for a year, and date and
timer informationfor seven hours.
Saving energy
There are two waysto switch to standby.
Normal method : Switchto standby using the
mSTANDBY button. The clock time will stillbe displayed.
If you have notset the clock, ’--:--’will appear.
To save energy :Press the mSTANDBY button twice. The clock
time will disappearfrom the display.

Playing a cassette
a Put a cassette inthe cassette slot.
b Press the PLAY G button.
c To stop, pressthe STOP h button.
d To eject the cassette,press the STOP/EJECT ? button
on the machine.
DSome hired cassettes mayhave a poor picture orpoor
sound quality. Thisis not a faultin your machine. Please
read the section ’Selectingthe picture setting (SMART
PICTURE)’, or ’Pictureinterference’ in this chapter.
DSome functions switch offautomatically aftera while (for
example, pause, stillpicture, picture search). This helps
to protect the cassetteand avoids wasting power.
Playing NTSC casettes
With this machineyou can play cassettesthat have been
recorded on another videorecorder in the NTSC standard.
NTSC is the TV systemused in, for example, Americaand
Japan. PAL is the TVsystem usedin, for example, Europe.But
this only worksfor PAL-television setswhich are suitable fora
picture frequency of60 Hz.
When you play an NTSCcassette, ’60HZ’will appear on the
video recorder display.
DSome special features (forexample, stillpicture) are not
possible while youare playing an NTSC cassette.
Tape position indicator
a Press the COUNTER button while the cassetteis playing.
b Select one of the followingoptions.
’TIME USED’ to showthe time used on thetape.
’TIME LEFT’ toshow the time lefton the tape.
’COUNTER’ to show thepresent positionon the tape.
DBy pressing the OK button, you can show the present
tape position on theTV screen.
Searching for a tape positionwith the
picture (picture search)
a While a cassetteis playing, pressthe H (rewind) or
I (wind) button.
b To stop at a certainpicture, pressthe PLAY G button.
DDuring picture search, the picturequality may not be so
good and there will be nosound.
JOG and SHUTTLE
You will find a largeknob o on the video recorder and the
remote control.
a Switch the functionon by pressing the STILL R button.
You will see a stillpicture.
b Use the inner JOG discon the remote controlto select
the next or previousstill picture.
c By turning the innerdisc continuouslyto the right or to
the left you can switchto slow motion, forwards or
backwards.
d The outer SHUTTLE ringof the knob allowsyou to select
different tape speedsfor the forwardand reverse picture
search.
Searching for a tape positionwithout the
picture (wind and rewind)
a Stop the tape with the STOPh button.
b Press the H (rewind) or I (wind) button or, on the
video recorder, turnthe outer ring ofthe knob o to
the left or tothe right.
c To stop at a certainposition, pressthe STOP h button.

Instant view
With this functionyou can switch to picture search during
wind or rewind.
a If you hold the H (rewind) or I (wind) button
during wind or rewind,you will switchto picture search.
b If you releasethe button, the videorecorder will
automatically switchback to rewind or wind.
Automatic search for a tape position
(index search)
At the startof each recording, the videorecorder will markthe
tape with an index codemark.
a Press the INDEX E button. Then press the I button to
select the nextcode mark or the H button for the
previous code mark.
b When the video recorderfinds the code markor a blank
space it will automaticallyswitch to play.
DYou can only search for a blankspace with recordings
made on a video recorderthat does not have thisindex
code mark function.
Selecting the picture setting
(SMART PICTURE)
You can change the colour, contrastand sharpness of the
picture while a cassetteis playing.
a Press the SMART button. This willshow the current
picture setting.
b Press the SMART button again to selectthe picture
setting you want.
c Confirm the new settingwith the OK button.
This picture settingwill not change until you eject the
cassette.
Picture interference
If the picture qualityis poor when you play a cassette,please
follow these instructions.
Tracking while a cassetteis playing
a Press the MENU button.
b Select the line ’PLAYFUNCTIONS’ withthe menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
c Select the line ’MANUALTRACKING’ with the menu
buttons P = or P ; .
d Hold the menu buttons Q or P until the picture
quality is atits best.
e Confirm with the OK button.
f To end, press the MENU button. Thissetting will not
change until you eject thecassette.
Tracking with a stillpicture
If the stillpicture vibratesvertically,you can improve itas
follows.
a Press the MENU button.
b Select the line ’PLAYFUNCTIONS’ withthe menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
c Select the line ’VERTICALSTABILITY’ with the menu
buttons P = or P ; .
d Hold the menu buttons Q or P until the picture
quality is atits best.
e Confirm with the OK button.
f To end, press the MENU button.
Cleaning the video heads
a While a cassetteis playing, pressthe MENU button.
b Select the line ’PLAYFUNCTIONS’ withthe menu buttons
P = or P ; and confirm with the P button.
c Select the line ’HEADCLEANING’ withthe menu buttons
P = or P ; .
d Press the OK button. ’HEAD CLEANING INPROGRESS’
will appear on the screen.
e Wait a few secondsuntil the messagedisappears. Then
press the MENU button to end.

Recording without automatic switch-off
a Put a cassette intothe machine.
b Use the P ; or P = button to select the programme
number you want to recordfrom.
DIf you are using ’Directrecord’, select theprogramme
number on the TV set.Then, with the videorecorder
switched on, pressthe nRECORD/OTR button.
DIf a TV channel transmitsa channel name, it willshow on
the video recorder display.
DProgramme numbers ’E1’ and ’E2’are for recording from
other sources (throughscart sockets AV1 EXT1 and
AV2 EXT2 ). Programme number ’E3’is for recording from
the front sockets VIDEO and L-AUDIO-R .
DProgramme numbers ’AUX’ and ’MIC’are for audio
recordings (through sockets AUX IN L R ) and the
microphone socket ’ MIC. ’.
c Press the nRECORD/OTR button.
d Stop recording withthe STOP h button.
Recording with automaticswitch-off
(OTR one-touch recording)
a Put a cassette intothe machine.
b Use the P ; or P = button to select the programme
number you want to record.
c Press the nRECORD/OTR button.
d Press the nRECORD/OTR button again and again until the
display on the videorecorder shows theend time or
length of the recordingyou want.
DTo cancel this programme, pressthe CLEAR (CL) button.
Protecting your recordings
So that you don’t accidentallydelete an important recording,
remove the specialtab on the narrow sideof the cassettewith
a screwdriveror slide the specialtab to the left.Later, if you
no longer want to protectthe recording, you can seal the gap
again with stickytape or slide the special tab to theright.
Auto-assembling
You can use this functionto join individualrecordings without
any major picturedisturbance between them.
a While the cassetteis playing, searchfor the correct
position on the tape.
b Stop the cassetteby pressing the STOPh button.
’PAUSE’ will appear onthe TV screen.
c Now start recordingas usual by pressingthe
nRECORD/OTR button.
Choosing the recording speed (SP or LP)
You can reduce the recording speedby half. Thismakes it
possible to record,for example, eight-hoursinstead of
four-hours on an ’E240’(four-hour) cassette.

To make a programmed recording,your video recorder needs
to know:
the date you wantto make the recording;
the programmenumber of the TVchannel you want torecord;
the start and stoptime of therecording;
whether you wantto use VPS orPDC (see below);and
the recording speed(SP or LP).

You can programmeup to sixTIMER blocks amonth in advance.
VPS (video programming system) and PDC
(programme delivery control)
With VPS and PDC, theTV station controlsthe start time and
length of the recording.This means thatthe video recorder
switches itselfon and off at the right time, evenif a TV
programme you want torecord begins earlieror finisheslater
than expected.
Usually the starttime is the same as the VPS/PDCtime. But if
your TV guide givesa VPS or PDC timewhich is differentto the
programme’s starttime (for example, 20.15and VPS 20.14),you
must enter ’20.14’as the start time.
If you want toprogramme a time thatis differentfrom the VPS
and PDC time, you mustswitch off VPS and PDC.
DWith most TV stationsthe VPS and PDC timeare always
the same as the starttime.

When you play a cassettethat has been recorded in 16:9wide

if you have connected theTV set and the videorecorder with a
scart cable and ifyour TV set issuitable for widescreen.

Reducing picture disturbance
(’optimizing the modulator’)
You may experience picturedisturbance if youhave not used
a scart cable to connectyour video recorderand TV. This is
because another TV stationin your receptionarea may
already be using UHF-channelCH35 or 583MHz.
a Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
for the video recorder.
b Make sure thatthere is no cassettein the video recorder.
On the video recorder,press the STOP/EJECT ? and
the PLAY G buttons at the sametime for a fewseconds
until a channel frequencyappears on the display.The
video recorder willthen transmita test picture on this
channel.

Audio dubbing
This function allowsyou to replace (dub)the soundtrack ofan
existing recordingwith another soundtrack.To do this,
connect your audio equipment(for examle, a CDplayer) to the
L-AUDIO-R socket. You can alsoconnect a microphone to the
socket MIC. .

dubbing to start.

start to recordthe sound from theaudio equipment. The
normal soundtrackwill be re-recorded,but the stereo

Headphone volume

Selecting the soundtrack
You can select the soundtrackyou want to record. This is
especially usefulif the programme ismultilingual.

select from thefour possibilitiesdisplayed (’STEREO’,
’RIGHT’, ’LEFT’,’MONO’).
DWhile a tape is playing,you can select a fifthpossibility:
the ’MIXED’ mode.In this mode you canplay the mono
sound of the normalaudio track together withthe sound
of the stereo audiotrack.
DIf there is no stereosound recorded on the cassette,the
video recorder automaticallyswitches to mono sound.
’Synchro edit’
You can copy between thisvideo recorder and a suitable
camera recorder. Startboth machines at the same time and
use the adjustable startdelay (preroll time).
Adjusting the video recorder to the camera
recorder.
a Connect the two machineswith a synchro-editcable
(socket SYNCHRO EDIT on the front left of the video
recorder).
Connect the video or audiosource to the inputsockets
L-AUDIO-R and VIDEO of the video recorder.
DPlease also read the instructionmanual for the camera
recorder.
b Switch on the TV setand select the programmenumber
