Connectingthetransformer
WiringtheOperatingTrackSection(OTS)
Forbestperformance,ScaleTrax,onceassembled,shouldbenailedorscrewedontothe
layoutplatform.MoldedhiddenholesinthebottomofeachsectionofScaleTraxallow
youtosecurethemtotheplatformwithoutthenailsshowing.
Unscrewthecolor-codedblackandredconnecting
pinsonthebackoftheZ-750untiltheyareloosebut
havenotcomeout.Twistthematchingblackandred
wires,respectively,fromtheScaleTraxlock-onaround
thecolor-matchingpinsonthetransformerandtighten
pinstosecure.
TheOTSfunctionsintwoways:UNLOAD,whichactivatesoperatingcars,liketheone
includedinthisset,andUNCOUPLE,whichopenscouplersthatarepositionedaboveit
whenactivated.

BasicOperation
TheThrottleknobcontrolshowfastyourtrainwilltravel.
Turnthethrottleknobup½-way,untiltheengineandcabooselightsshinebright.
PuttheengineintomotionbypressingtheDirectionbuttononyourtransformer
once.(holditforapproximately1second)
IftheenginedoesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,
youmaynothavesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove.Turnthe
throttleupabithigheruntilthetrainbeginstomove.
Toincreaseordecreasetrack
voltage,andthereforetrainspeed,turnthe
throttlecontrolknob.Turningclockwisewill
increasevoltageandspeed,whileturning
counterclockwisewilldecreasevoltageand
speed.Theenginewillmaintainthespeed
yousetafteryoureleasethethrottleuntil
youturnitagaintochangethevoltageand
speed.
-Tosoundthebell,inanengine
equippedwithabellfirmlypressand
releasetheBellbutton.Toturnthebelloff,
pressandreleasetheBellbuttonagain.Thebellwillcontinuetoringfromthetimeyou
turnitonuntilyoupressandreleasethebuttonagaintoturnitoff.
-Tosoundthewhistle,firmlypresstheHorn/Whistlebutton.Thewhistle
willsoundforaslongasyoucontinuetodepressthebutton.Itwillstopwhenyou
releasethebutton.
Yourtrainisprogrammedtostartin
neutral.Thetrainwillalwayscycleneutral-
forward-neutral-reversewitheachpressandrelease
ofthedirectionbutton.Theengineisprogrammed
torestartinneutraleachtimethetrackvoltageis
turnedofffor25secondsormore.
Toadjustthevolumeofallsoundsmadebythis
engine,turnthemastervolumecontrolknoblocated
underthetenderclockwisetoincreasethevolume
andcounter-clockwisetodecreasethevolume.

Whenyouarereadytooperatethedumpcar,makesuretheentirecarisontheUncoupling/UnloadingTrack
Section(UTS),sothatthecar'sslideshoepick-upsareincontactwiththefourthandfifthrailsoftheUTS.The
recommendedvoltageforthedumpingactionis10-14volts.
HowtoSet-UpandUsetheOperatingDumpCar
Followthedirectionsbelowtooperatethedumpcar.
HoldtheUTSswitchinthe"Unload"position.(RefertoyourUTSinstructionsheetfor
completedirectionsinitsuse.)Thedumpcarwillrise,emptyitsload,shaketoensurethe
entireloadhasbeendumped,andreturntoitsoriginalflatpositionwhileyouholdtheswitch
inplace.Assoonasyoureleasetheswitchfromthe"Unload"position,thecarwillceaseto
move.

ActivatingProto-Sound2.0ConventionalModeFeatures:
Proto-Sound2.0featuresareactivatedbysequencesofBellandWhistlebuttonpushes
describedbelow.Pleasereadthefulldescriptionsofeachfeaturebeforeusingit.Touse
thesebuttonstoactivatefeaturesratherthantoblowthewhistleorringthebell,you
shouldtapthebuttonsveryquicklywitha½-secondpausebetweenbuttonpresses.You
mayneedtopracticeyourtimingtomakethisworksmoothly.
FreightYardSounds(FYS):
Yourengineisequippedwithasoundpackageoffreightyardsoundsthatyoucanplay
whenyoupullintoayard.
TocuethesoundsystemtoplaytheFYS,quicklybutfirmlytaptheBellbuttononce
followedby2quicktapsoftheWhistlebuttonwhiletheengineismoving.Tapthe
buttonsquicklybutallowapproximately½secondbetweeneachpress.
PresstheDirectionbuttononcetostoptheengine.Thiswilltriggerthefirst
sequenceofFYS.Thereverseunitistemporarilydisabledsothatthetrainwillnot
moveasyouusetheDirectionbuttontotriggerthesounds,andProto-Sound2.0has
disabledoperatorcontrolovertheWhistleandBellbuttonsuntilthefullFYS
sequenceiscomplete.
Afterwaitingabout30secondsforthatsequencetorun,presstheDirectionbutton
againtotriggerthesecondsequenceofFYS.
Afterabout30seconds,presstheDirectionbuttonagaintotriggerthethirdFYS
sequence.
Eachsequencedescribedbelowwillplayaslongasitis
lefton,randomlygeneratingsounds,butbesuretoallowapproximately30seconds
betweenthebuttonpushesdescribedbelowtoallowtheFYSsufficienttimetorun
througheachsequence.

continue,andwithinafewseconds,theenginewillstartandmoveoutonitsownat
thecurrentthrottlesetting,inthesamedirectionitwastravelingwhenyoubeganthe
sequence.Oncethebellturnsoff,theoperatorregainscontrolofthetransformer's
BellandWhistlebuttonsandcanringthebellorblowthehornasusual.
YoucanterminateFYSatanytimebyturningoffpowertothetrackfor15
seconds.
YoudonothavetobeinForward touseFYS.Attheconclusionofthefull
sequence,thetrainwillpullawayfromthestationinwhateverdirectionyou
weregoingwhenyouactivatedthefeature.
YoucanuseFYSevenifyouaredouble-headingwithanotherengine.Ifthe
secondengineisnotequippedwithProto-Sound2.0,youmustremembernot
toleavethethrottleatahighvoltagelevelonceyouhavestoppedtheengineto
runtheFYS.Otherwise,theenginewithoutFYSwillbeginvibratingonthe
trackasitsmotorsstraintomovethetrain,sincetheycannotbeautomatically
disabledduringtheFYScycle(orifanoriginalProto-Soundengine,FYSare
triggereddifferentlyandthatengine'smotor-disablefeaturewillnotbeactive
whenyourunFYSinProto-Sound2.0).
FYScanbetriggeredfromNeutral.Itwilloperatethesameasiftriggered
whileinmotionexceptthat,attheconclusionoftheFYS,theenginewill
departinthenextdirectionoftravel,asopposedtothedirectionitwas
travelingbeforeenteringNeutral.
Thislocomotiveisequippedwithoneormorecoil-woundProto-Couplersforremote
uncouplingaction.BecauseProto-CouplersarecontrolledthroughtheProto-Sound2.0
microprocessor,theydonotrequireanuncouplingtracksectionormodificationtoyour
layouttofunction.Youcanfireacouplerfromneutralorwhileinmotion.Usethecode
shownbelow(andinthechartonp.10)tofirethecoupler(s).
Tofiretherearcoupler,quicklytaptheBellbuttononcefollowedbythreequicktapsof
theWhistlebutton,allowingapproximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquickbutton
press.Thesoundoftheliftbarandairlinedepletionwillplay,andtheknucklewillbe
released.

M.T.H.enginesequippedwithProto-Sound2.0havespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallow
theenginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,much
likeanautomobilecruisecontrol.Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheengine
willmaintainthespeedyouset.
Whiletheengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan
opttoturnitoff.Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease
asittravelsdownward.Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe
run.Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeed
controlisonthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelfor
operationwithspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments.Whenspeedcontrolis
off,thevolumewilldroptoallowforbetterlowvoltageoperation.
puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe
transformer'sWhistlebuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,
allowingapproximatelsecondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress.Repeatthe1
whistle,2bellscodetoreturnittotheothercondition.Youwillwanttodothisduring
theinitialneutraluponstart-upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnot
equippedwithspeedcontroltoavoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine.Eachtime
youshutdowntheenginecompletely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeedcontrolon.
Youcanlockyourengineintoadirection(forward,neutral,orreverse)sothatitwillnot
changedirections.Todothis,puttheengineintothedirectionyouwant(orintoneutral
tolockitintoneutral),runitataveryslowcrawl(asslowlyasitwillmovewithout
halting),andquicklybutfirmlytaptheWhistlebuttononcefollowedbythreequicktaps
oftheBellbutton,allowingapproximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbutton
press.Twowhistleblastswillindicatethattheenginehasmadethechange.Theengine
willnotchangedirection(includinggoingintoneutral)untilyourepeatthe1whistle,3
bellscodetoreturn theenginetoitsnormalcondition,eveniftheengineiskeptwithout

Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones.Donot
mixoldandnewbatteries.
Removebatteriesbeforestoringforextendedperiods.
Donotdroptheremote.Itcandamagethedelicateelectronicsinside.

(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseasthecoatingwearsoff;thisis
normal).Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanitwhenitgetsdirtytoensure
goodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires.
Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof
flangeddrivers.Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat
somepoint.

Thissteamlocomotivecontainsasmokeunitthatoutputssmokethroughthesmokestack
ontheboileroftheengine.Thesmokeunitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wickthatsoaksupandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.
Thesmokeisthenforcedoutofthestackbyasmallelectricfan.
Withafeweasymaintenancesteps,youshouldenjoytrouble-freesmokeunitoperation
foryears.
Whenpreparingtorunthisengine,add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe
smokestack.WerecommendM.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe,LGB,orLVTSfluids(a

wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains.

Slipthenewtireontothewheel.Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead
screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.

Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove.Usearazorbladetotrimaway

Afterremovingtheenginefromstorage,add
another25dropsoffluid,lettingthewicksoak
upthefluidfor15minutespriortooperation.
Ifyouexperiencepoorornosmokeoutputwhenthesmoke
unitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktoseeifithas
becomehard,blackened,andunabsorbentaroundthe
heatingelement.Removetheboilerasshownbelow.
Removethesmokeunitinspectioncoverfromthe
locomotive'sbody(seeright).Afterremovingthechassis
andinspectioncoverscrews,lifttheinspectionplateaway
andinspectthewick.Ifitisdarklydiscoloredandhard,it
shouldbereplaced.Whenprimingnewwickadd40drops.

operationandshouldlastforuptofiveyears.Thebatteryisadrybatterythatshouldnot
leakorcauseanydamagetoyourengine.
Ifenginesoundsseemdistorted
orgarbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthetransformeristurned
off,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldberechargedorreplaced.
Puttheengineinneutralandleavethetrackvoltageat10-12volts(high
enoughforthelightstoshinebrightlyandtheenginetomovesteadily)for15
minutes.
