INSTALLATION
SAFETY LABEL
This is a copy of the safety label that
accompanies the E33 Sunrise
TM
Gas Insert.
We have printed a copy of the contents here
for your review. The safety label is located on
a plate inside the base of the unit visible when
the bottom louver is opened.
NOTE: FPI units are constantly being
improved. Check the label on the unit and
if there is a difference, the label on the unit
is the correct one.
For the State of Massachusetts, installation
and repair must be done by a plumber or
gas tter licensed in the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts.
For the State of Massachusetts, exible
connectors shall not exceed 36 inches in
length.
For the State of Massachusetts, the appli-
ances individual manual shut-off must be a
t-handle type valve.
The State of Massachusetts requires the
installation of a carbon monoxide alarm in
accordance with NFPA 720 and a CO alarm
with battery back up in the same room where
the gas appliance is installed.

REQUIREMENTS
5.08: Modifications to NFPA-54, Chapter 10
(2) Revise 10.8.3 by adding the following additional requirements:
(a) For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment installed in every dwelling, building or structure used in whole or in part for
residential purposes, including those owned or operated by the Commonwealth and where the side wall exhaust vent termination is less than
seven (7) feet above finished grade in the area of the venting, including but not limited to decks and porches, the following requirements shall
be satisfied:
1. INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS. At the time of installation of the side wall horizontal vented gas fueled
equipment, the installing plumber or gasfitter shall observe that a hard wired carbon monoxide detector with an alarm and battery back-up is
installed on the floor level where the gas equipment is to be installed. In addition, the installing plumber or gasfitter shall observe that a battery
operated or hard wired carbon monoxide detector with an alarm is installed on each additional level of the dwelling, building or structure
served by the side wall horizontal vented gas fueled equipment. It shall be the responsibility of the property owner to secure the services of
qualified licensed professionals for the installation of hard wired carbon monoxide detectors
a. In the event that the side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment is installed in a crawl space or an attic, the hard wired carbon
monoxide detector with alarm and battery back-up may be installed on the next adjacent floor level.
b. In the event that the requirements of this subdivision can not be met at the time of completion of installation, the owner shall have a period of
thirty (30) days to comply with the above requirements; provided, however, that during said thirty (30) day period, a battery operated carbon
monoxide detector with an alarm shall be installed.
2. APPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS. Each carbon monoxide detector as required in accordance with the above provisions
shall comply with NFPA 720 and be ANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certified.
3. SIGNAGE. A metal or plastic identification plate shall be permanently mounted to the exterior of the building at a minimum height of eight
(8) feet above grade directly in line with the exhaust vent terminal for the horizontally vented gas fueled heating appliance or equipment. The
sign shall read, in print size no less than one-half (1/2) inch in size, "GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALL
OBSTRUCTIONS".
4. INSPECTION. The state or local gas inspector of the side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment shall not approve the installation
unless, upon inspection, the inspector observes carbon monoxide detectors and signage installed in accordance with the provisions of 248 CMR
5.08(2)(a)1 through 4.
(b) EXEMPTIONS: The following equipment is exempt from 248 CMR 5.08(2)(a)1 through 4:
1. The equipment listed in Chapter 10 entitled "Equipment Not Required To Be Vented" in the most current edition of NFPA 54 as adopted by
the Board; and
2. Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment installed in a room or structure separate from the dwelling, building or
structure used in whole or in part for residential purposes.
(c) MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS - GAS EQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM PROVIDED. When the manufacturer of Product
Approved side wall horizontally vented gas equipment provides a venting system design or venting system components with the equipment, the
instructions provided by the manufacturer for installation of the equipment and the venting system shall include:
1. Detailed instructions for the installation of the venting system design or the venting system components; and
2. A complete parts list for the venting system design or venting system.
(d) MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS - GAS EQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM NOT PROVIDED. When the manufacturer of a
Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment does not provide the parts for venting the flue gases, but identifies
"special venting systems", the following requirements shall be satisfied by the manufacturer:
1. The referenced "special venting system" instructions shall be included with the appliance or equipment installation instructions; and
2. The "special venting systems" shall be Product Approved by the Board, and the instructions for that system shall include a parts list and
detailed installation instructions.
(e) A copy of all installation instructions for all Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment, all venting instructions,
all parts lists for venting instructions, and/or all venting design instructions shall remain with the appliance or equipment at the completion of
the installation.

The FPI Gas Insert must be installed in accord-
ance with these instructions. Carefully read all
the instructions in this manual rst. Consult
the building authority having jurisdiction to
determine the need for a permit prior to starting
the installation.
NOTE: Failure to follow the instructions could
cause a malfunction of the heater which could
result in death, serious bodily injury, and/or
property damage. Failure to follow these
instructions may also void your re insurance
and/or warranty.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
This appliance requires air for proper combustion.
Always provide adequate combustion and
ventilation air. Follow instructions and
information in CSA B149.1 (in Canada) or the
National Fuel Gas Code ANS Z223.1/NFPA
(in the USA), regarding requirements for
combustion and ventilation air.
GAS PRESSURE
TESTING
The appliance must be isolated from the gas
supply piping system by closing its individual
manual shut off valve during any pressure
testing of the gas supply piping system at test
pressures equal to or less than
1/2 psig. (3.45 kPa).
SPECIFICATIONS
At pressures over 1/2 psig, the pipe to the unit
must be disconnected.

The E33S Gas Insert have been tested and
approved to be vented into any masonry
fireplace or approved solid fuel burning
factory built replace that will allow the insert
to physically t into the rebox. Refer to the
"Minimum Fireplace Dimensions" section.
If the factory built replace* height is too low
for your Insert, you may remove the smoke
baf e plate and damper from the factory
built replace as long as these items are
saved and are reinstalled in the event that
the Insert is removed. NOTE: Any alterations
made to the listed solid fuel burning factory
built replace may void the listing of the
replace. Cutting any sheet-metal parts of
the replace, in which the gas replace insert
is to be installed, is prohibited.
If the factory-built replace has no gas
access hole(s) provided, an access hole of
1.5" (37.5mm) or less may be drilled through
the lower sides or bottom of the rebox in
a proper workmanship like manner. This
access hole must be plugged with non-
combustible insulation after the gas supply
line has been installed.
The replace and replace chimney must
be clean and in good working order and
constructed of non-combustible materials
and chimney cleanouts must t properly.
Refractory, glass doors, screen rails, screen
mesh, and log grates can be removed
from the replace before installing the gas
replace insert. Smoke shelves, shields
and baf es may be removed if attached by
mechanical fasteners. A tight connection
between the gas replace insert ue collar
and the replace chimney must be made.
*Check with your local inspector before
commencing with this installation.
BEFORE YOU START
Safe installation and operation of this appliance
requires common sense, however, we are
required by the Canadian Safety Standards
and ANSI Standards to make you aware of
the following:
General Safety Information
1) The appliance installation must conform
with local codes or in the absence of local
codes, with CAN/CSA B149.1 (in Canada)
or the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1
NFPA 54 in the U.S.A. This appliance should
be installed by a quali ed gas tter technician
only.
2) Installation and repair should be done
by a quali ed service person.
3) The appliance should be inspected
before use and at least annually by
a professional service person. More
frequent cleaning may be required due
to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding
material, animal hair, etc. It is imperative
that control compartments, burners
and circulating air passageways of the
appliance be kept clean.
4) See general construction and assembly
instructions. This appliance may only be
installed in a vented, noncombustible
replace.
5) This appliance is Listed for bedroom
installations when used with a Listed Millivolt
Thermostat. Some areas may have further
requirements, check local codes before
installation.
6) Always connect this appliance to a vent
system vent that is run (or routed) to the
outside of the building envelope. Never vent
to another room or inside a building. Make
sure that the vent is properly sized and is
of adequate height to provide the proper
draft.
7) Inspect the venting system annually for
blockage and any signs of deterioration.
8) Any glass removed for servicing must be
replaced prior to operating the appliance.
9) WARNING: Failure to position the parts
in accordance with the diagrams in
this manual or failure to use only parts
speci cally approved with this appliance
may result in property damage or
personal injury.
10) To prevent injury, do not allow anyone who
is unfamiliar with the operation to use the
replace.
Installer must mechanically attach the supplied
label to the inside of the rebox of the replace
into which the gas replace insert is installed.
"WARNING: This replace has been converted
for use with a gas replace insert only and
cannot be used for burning wood or solid fuels
unless all original parts have been replaced,
and the replace re-approved by the authority
having jurisdiction."

11) Due to high temperatures, the appliance
should be located out of high traf c areas
and away from furniture and draperies.
Children and adults should be alerted to
the hazards of high surface temperatures,
especially the replace glass, and should
stay away to avoid burns or clothing
ignition. Young children should be carefully
supervised when they are in the same
room as the appliance. Clothing or other
ammable material should not be placed
on or near the appliance.
INSTALLATION
CHECKLIST
Before installing vent system ensure that the
damper plate is open and secure to prevent the
damper plate from falling down and crushing
the liner.
The FPI Gas Insert is installed as listed
below.
1) Check all clearances to combustibles.
Refer to the following sections where
applicable:
a. Minimum Clearances to Combustibles
b. Combustible Mantel Clearances
2) Make the gas connection. Refer to the "Gas
Connection" section.
3) Install the 3" ue liner to the sliding connector
plate. Refer to the "Flue Liner Installation"
section.
4) Slide the unit half way into the replace.
5) Pull the vent connector plate through the
tapered brackets and fasten to the front
plate. Refer to the "Flue Liner Installation"
section.
6) Slide the unit fully into the replace.
7) Test gas pressure, refer to the "Gas Pipe
Pressure Testing" section. Check aeration
system, refer to "Gas Insert Aeration
Systems" section.
8) Install standard and optional features.
Refer to the following sections where
applicable:
Emissions from burning wood or gas could
contain chemicals known to the State of
California to cause cancer, birth defects or
other reproductive harm.
a. Glass Crystals
b. Contemporary Faceplate
c. Remote Control
d. Wall Thermostat
9) Final check. Refer to the "Final Check"
section. Before leaving this unit with the
customer, the installer must ensure that the
appliance is ring correctly. This includes:
a) Clocking the appliance to ensure the
correct ring rate.
b) Adjusting the primary air, if required,
to ensure that the ame does not
carbon. Refer to the "Gas Insert
Aeration System" section.
c) Ensuring that the appliance is venting
correctly.
MATERIALS
REQUIRED
No electrical power supply is required for the gas
control to operate. A 120 Volt AC power cord is
hooked up to the fan. Plug the 3 wire cord into
a suitable receptacle. Do not cut the ground
terminal off under any circumstances. When
connected with 120 volts, the appliance must
be electrically grounded in accordance with
local codes, current version of the Canadian
Electrical Code CSA C22.1 (in Canada) or in
the absence of local codes, with the National
Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70.

COMBUSTIBLE MANTEL CLEARANCES
Due to the extreme heat this replace emits, the mantel clearances
are critical.
Note: A non-combustible mantel may be installed at a lower height
if the framing is made of metal studs covered with a non-
combustible board.
Mantel can be installed anywhere in shaded area or higher using the
above scale.
Note: Ensure the paint that is used on the mantel and the facing
is "heat resistant" or the paint may discolour.

VENTING
THE APPLIANCE MUST NOT BE
CONNECTED TO A CHIMNEY FLUE
SERVING A SEPARATE SOLID FUEL
BURNING APPLIANCE.
This appliance is designed to be attached to
two 3" (76mm) co-linear aluminium ex running
the full length of the chimney. The ue length
must be a minimum length of 8 ' (2.44m) and
a maximum of 35' (10.7m). See chart above
for minimum distances from roof. Periodically
check that the vent is unrestricted.
Masonry chimneys may take various contours
which the exible liner will accommodate.
However, keep the exible liner as straight
as possible, avoid unnecessary bending.
GAS CONNECTION
GAS CONNECTION WARNING:
Only persons licensed to work
with gas piping may make the
necessary gas connections to
this appliance.
1) If the appliance is to be installed into an
existing chimney system, thoroughly clean
the masonry or factory built replace.
2) The appliance is provided with an opening on
the left hand side of the control compartment.
A 3/8" NPT gas supply pipe must be brought
near this inlet hole.

3) Locate the center point where the vent
will pass through the chimney above the
appliance. Move the appliance into the exact
location where it is to be installed. Ensure
that the Insert is level.
In areas of consistently high winds, we
recommend using the Simpson Dura-Vent
System (46DVA-GK adapter and 46DVA-VCH
high-wind cap).
The Air Intake pipe must be attached to the inlet
air collar of the termination cap.
5) Install ashing.
6) Insert both liners into chimney, passing
through the damper opening.
7) Install termination cap.
8) Connect the marked end of the liner to the
exhaust collar of the vent connector plate
marked with an "E", seal connection with
high temperature silicone. Secure with gear
clamp.
9) Connect the 2nd liner to the intake collar, seal
connection with high temperature silicone.
Secure with gear clamp.
NOTE:
1) Final gas connection should be made after
unit is in place to avoid damage to line when
pushing the unit into position.
2) Mill-pac may be used instead of high
tempture silicone and screws may be used
instead of gear clamps at connections of
liner to inlet and vent collars.
10) Align vent connector plate with guides on
unit.
11) Slide unit into masonry opening, while
ensuring that the slot at the rear of the
connector plate mates up with the hold down
plate on the unit.
12) Secure with Screw.
FLUE LINER
INSTALLATION
1) Cut the ex liner as required.
2) Mark the end of one liner with an "E" to
indicate Exhaust.
3) Connect the other end of the above liner to
the exhaust side of the termination adaptor,
seal connection with high temperature
silicone. Secure with gear clamp.
4) Connect the 2nd liner to the inlet side of
the adaptor, seal connection with high
temperature silicone. Secure with gear
clamp.
NOTE: This unit is equipped with a heat
sensor thermodisc which will prevent the
blower from operating until the unit reaches
the correct temperature.

GAS PIPE
PRESSURE TESTING
The appliance must be isolated from the gas
supply piping system by closing its individual
manual shut-off valve during any pressure
testing of the gas supply piping system at test
pressures equal to or less than 1/2 psig. (3.45
kPa). Disconnect piping from valve at pressures
over 1/2 psig.
The manifold pressure is controlled by a regulator
built into the gas control, and should be checked
at the pressure test point.
NOTE: To properly check gas pressure, both
inlet and manifold pressures should
be checked using the valve pressure
ports on the valve.
1) Make sure the valve is in the "OFF"
position.
2) Loosen the "IN" and/or "OUT" pressure
tap(s), turning counterclockwise with a 1/8"
wide at screwdriver.
3) Attach manometer to "IN" and/or "OUT"
pressure tap(s) using a 5/16" ID hose.
4) Light the pilot and turn the valve to "ON"
position.
5) The pressure check should be carried out
with the unit burning and the setting should
be within the limits speci ed on the safety
label.
6) When nished reading manometer, turn
off the gas valve, disconnect the hose and
tighten the screw (clockwise) with a 1/8" at
screwdriver. Note: Screw should be snug,
but do not over tighten.
GAS INSERT
AERATION SYSTEM
The burner aeration is factory set but may need
adjusting due to either the local gas supply or
altitude. Open the air shutter for a blue ame
or close for a more yellow ame.
The burner assembly will need to be removed
in order to adjust burner aeration if required.
See steps 1-4 in "Conversion Kit# 434-969
from NG to LP".

WIRING DIAGRAMS
This heater does not require a 120V A.C. supply
for operation. However, a 120V A.C. power
supply is needed for the fan/blower operation.
WARNING: Electrical Grounding Instructions
This appliance is equipped with a three pronged
(grounding) plug for your protection against shock
hazard and should be plugged directly into a properly
grounded three-prong receptacle. Do not cut or remove
the grounding prong from this plug.
Caution: Ensure that
the wires do not touch
any hot surfaces and
are away from sharp
edges.
CAUTION: Label all wires prior
to disconnection when servicing
controls. Wiring errors can cause
improper and dangerous operation.

INSTALLATION
Use the FPI Remote Control Kit approved for
this unit. Use of other systems may void your
warranty.
The remote control kit comes with a hand held
transmitter, a receiver and a wall mounting
plate.
1) Choose a convenient location on the wall
to install the receiver and the receptacle
box (protection from extreme heat is very
important). Run wires from the replace to
that location. Use Thermostat Wire Table.
2) Connect the wires as per the wiring diagrams
below.
CAUTION
Do not connect the millivolt
remote control wires
to the 120V wires.
3) Install 3 AAA alkaline batteries in transmitter
and 4 AA alkaline batteries in the receiver.
Install the receiver and its cover in the wall.
Switch the remote receiver to "remote"
mode. The remote control is now ready
for operation. Refer to Remote manual for
complete details.

A wall thermostat may be installed if desired,
follow the wiring diagram. Note: the wires are
connected to the "TH" on the gas valve. Use
the table below to determine the maximum wire
length. FPI offers an optional programmable
thermostat but any 250-750 millivolt rated non-
anticipator type thermostat that is CSA, ULC or
UL approved may be used.
It is recommended that the thermostat be
installed on an interior wall.
CAUTION
Do not connect the millivolt
wall thermostat wires
to the 120V wires.

GLASS DOOR INSTALLATION
INSTALLATION
To install the glass door, simply hook the top door ange onto the top of
the unit and swing the door towards the unit, (see Diagrams 1 and 2). Be
careful that the glass gasket does not roll up; there must be a gap between
the gasket and the door lip to ensure that the door sits securely on the
unit. Refer to Diagram 3.

*Recommended to use only 50 of the 70 ceramic stones on the P33S
burner.
Spread the supplied Glass Crystals (or optional Ceramic Spa Stones)
evenly over the burner. Ensure the crystals (stones) do not overlap too
much as this will effect the ame pattern.
NOTE: When installing, use either the supplied Glass Crystals or optional
Ceramic Spa Stones - DO NOT combine the two when installing on Models
P33S/ E33S/ L676S. Only the supplied approved Cobalt Blue Glass or
optional Ceramic Spa Stones are to be used with this replace. Use of
any other type of glass crystals or ceramic stones can alter the unit's
performance, any damage caused by the use of any unapproved glass
or stones will not be covered under warranty.
NOTE: When using Ceramic Stones, DO NOT cover burner ports that
lead to pilot ame.

CONTEMPORARY FACEPLATE &
DOOR FRAME INSTALLATION
1) Bring the faceplate up in front of the unit and connect the red & black
ON/OFF wires from the unit to the ON/OFF switch on the back of the
left side of the faceplate.
2) Connect the grey coated female ends of the black & red fan wires
from the unit to the male ends of the fan rheostat on the left side of
the faceplate as shown.

3) Secure loose wires using wire clips along the back of the left side
of the faceplate. Ensure to run the wires away from the fi rebox as
much as possible.
4) Align the faceplate tabs with the tab brackets on the inside top of the
rebox and slide in place.
NOTE: For easy installation do not force both tabs in at the same
time, stagger from left to right.

6) Place 2 screws through the screw holes on the hinge and place a
spacer over each screw.
7) Secure the hinge to the bottom fl ange of the fi rebox with 2 screws
from step 6. Repeat for other side.

8) Align the left and right side hinge with the screw holes in the bottom
louver and secure in place using 3 screws per side.
9) Install the door frame by hooking the top fl ange over top of the glass
door, push in the bottom of the door frame to secure in place.
NOTE: To ensure the gap between the door frame and faceplate legs
are equal (approximately 1/2" on each side) you may need to slide
the door frame slightly to the left or right accordingly.

10) Close the bottom louver.

5) Secure the bottom of the faceplate to the fi rebox fl ange using one
screw on each side.
NOTE: Ensure that the bottom of the faceplate leg is aligned with the
screw hole on the inner side of the fi rebox fl ange.

OPTIONAL HEARTH TRIM
INSTALLATION
The Hearth Trim is an option that can be used to fi nish off the installation when the bottom of the fi replace is higher
than the hearth or to raise the fi replace. The faceplate is assembled fi rst and then the hearth trim is attached to the
faceplate. There are 2 Hearth Trim options; a 2" and a 4".
2" Hearth Trim (341-942) Installation:
1) Attach the Hearth Trim to the bottom of the faceplate side
panels with the screws provided (3 per side) as shown in
diagram 1. The holes in the Hearth Trim are oblong so the
trim can be adjusted inwards or outwards as needed to suit
nishing.
NOTE: Don't tighten the screws down completely at this point,
do a trial fi t to the unit, make any necessary adjustments and
when it fi ts properly then tighten screws.
4" Hearth Trim (341-944) Installation:
1) Secure the two 2" hearth trim pieces together as shown in
diagram 2. Secure using the 2 screws provided.
2) Attach the now 4" Hearth Trim to the bottom of the faceplate
side panels with the screws provided (3 per side) as shown
in diagram 1. The holes in the Hearth Trim are oblong so
the trim can be adjusted inwards or outwards as needed to
suit fi nishing.
