DOUBLE INSULATION

CRAFTSMAN REPLACEMENT PARTS.

• POLAR_ED PLUGS. To reducethe riskof electric

shock,thistool has a polarizedplug (one bladeiswider

than theother). Thisplugwillfit in a polarized outlet

onlyone way, Ifthe plugdoes not fit fully inthe outlet,

reversethe plug.If it still does notfit, contact a qualified

WARNING: Some dust created by powersanding,

sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction

activities contains chemicalsknowntocause cancer,

birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some

examplesofthese chemicalsare:

• lead from lead-based paints,

• crystalline silicafrom bricksand cement

and other masonry products, and

• arsenic and chromiumfrom chemically-

treated lumber.

Your risk from these exposures varies, depending

on how often you do this type of work. To reduce

your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well

ventilated area, and work with approved safety

equipment, such as those dust masks that are

specially designed to filter out microscopic

particles.

KNOW YOUR SANDER

See Figure 1.

Before attemptingto use your sender, familiarizeyourself

withall operatingfeatures and safety requirements.

Your sender is suitable for sandingwith coarse, medium,

andfine gritsandingdiscs.

WARNING: Ifany partsare missing,do not

operatethis tooluntilthe missingparts are

replaced. Failureto do so couldresultin possible

seriouspersonal injury.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION

Your sanderhasa precisionbuiltelectricmotor,it should

be connectedto a power supply that is 120 volts, 60Hz,

AC only (nonmal household eunmnt), Do notoperate

thistoolon directcurrent(DC). A voltagedropof more

than 10 percentwillcause a lossof powerand the motor

willoverheat. Ifyourtooldoes notoperatewhen plugged

intoan outlet,double-checkthe powersupply.

WARNING: Do notallowfamiliaritywithyour

sender to make you careless. Rememberthat a

carelessfraction ofa secondissufficientto inflict

severeinjury.

threaded holeinthe gear housing.

A spindlelockbuttonhas been providedfor lockingthe

spindleofyourtoctina stationary position.Itis locatedon

the sideofthe gear housingas showninfigure 3, Depress

and holdthe lockbuttonwhileinstalling,changing,or

removingaccessories,

SWITCH

Animportantnewfeature ofyour sanderisthe switch

design.It hasmulti-finger controlfor use when operatingat

differentangles or sandingpositionsand to helpreduce

fatigue.

Italso hasa lock-onfeature in the switchfor added utility

and convenienceon extendedwork requirements.

Carefullyread and understandthe following instructionsfor

correctoperationofthe switchbeforeconnectingyour

senderto powersupply.

To Activate Switch:

To startyoursander, depressthe switch triggerand switch

actuatorat the sametime. See Figure4.

Note: The partsofthe switchcan beeasily identifiedby

theircolor.The switch triggeris red. The switch actuator is

black.

"LOCK-ON" FEATURE

• Startyour sanderby depressingthe switch triggerand

switchactuator.

• Continueto holdyour sanderinthe ON positionwith

yourfingertipsand release the switchtrigger. See

Figures5 and 6.

• Release the switchactuatorand graspyoursanderby

the handleas showninfigure7.

TO RELEASE "LOCK-ON" FEATURE

• Depressthe switch triggerand release it. See Figure8.

,_ WARNING: Beforeconnectingyour sender to

powersupplysource, always check tobe sure itis

not in"lock-on" position.Failuretodo socould

resultinaccidental startingofyour sander resulting

in possibleseriousinjury.Also do not Iockthe

triggeron jobswhere yoursander may need to be

stopped suddenly.

• Disconnect sanderfrom power supply,

• Assemblepartsas shownin Figure9.

• Placewasher on spindle,then threadrubberback-up

pad ontospindle.Lock spindleby depressingspindle

lockbuttonand handtighten beck-uppad.

• Positionback-updiscand sandingdiscin place and

threadflange nutonto spindle.Tightenflange nut

securelybyturningthe sandingdisc clockwiseby hand.

,_ WARNING: Use onlythe back-uppad and back-

updisc suppliedwithyourtool, Other types of pads

or discscould disintegratecausingpossiblesedous

SANDING

The matedal beingsanded shouldbe heldfirmly,Secure

smallworkpiece ina vise orclamp toworkbench.

Hold yoursanderinfront and away from you with both

hands.Withthe sendingdisc clearof theworkpieca,start

your sanderand letthe motor reach itsmaximumspeed,

then lowertothe work surfaceat a slight5 to 8 degree

angle. See Figure 10. Do notallowthetoolto remainin

one place,This willcause uneven sandingor gougingof

the work. Keepyour sanderslowlymovingoverthe work.

This toolwas designed sothat the weightofthetoolalone

willprovideadequateweight onthe sandingdisc.Extra

pressurewillonlyresultin unevenwork, slowersanding

from slowerspeed,and possiblemotorbum-out,

Uponcompletionof work,or a sending operation,liftyour

sanderaway from work surface beforeturningoff.

rotatingspindle,wrap around it,and cause possible

GENERAL

Only the parts shownon partslist,page 13. are intended

to berepaired or replaced bythe customer.All otherparts

represent an importantpart ofthe doubleinsulationsystem

and shouldbeservicedonlyat a qualifiedservicecenter.

Avoid usingsolventswhen cleaningplasticparts. Most

plasticsare susceptibletovarioustypesofcommercial

solventsand may be damaged bytheiruse. Usa clean

clothsto remove dirt,carbondust, etc.

WARNING: Do notat anytime let brakefluids,

gasoline, petroleum-basedproducts,penetrating

oils,etc. come in contactwith plasticparts.They

containchemicalsthat candamage, weaken, or

destroy plastic.

When electric toolsare usedon fiberglass boats,sports

cars,wallboard,spacklingcompounds,or plaster, ithas

been found that they are subjectto acceleratedwear and

possibleprematurefailure,as the fiberglass chipsand

grindings are highlyabrasiveto beatings,brushes,

commutators,etc. Consequentlyitis notrecommended

thatthistoolbe usedfor extendedwork on anyfiberglass

material, wallboard,spacklingcompounds,or plaster.

Duringany useon these materials,it isextremely

importantthat the tooliscleanedfrequently byblowing

withan airjet.

EXTENSION CORDS

The useofany extensioncordwillcause some lossof

power. To keepthe lossto a minimumand to preventtool

extension cordssuitablefor outdooruseand somarked.
