Basic VSR-100 Operations
1. Volume UP/Down may be controlled manually, by direct IR from the included remote
(Fig. 5.) and by wired IR to the IR IN port.
2. IR ported to the IR IN may be code from the handheld remote (included) or code
stored in Keypads, touch panels, or other learning remotes.
3. When the VSR-100 is first turned on, the volume is restored to the last setting before
the VSR-100 was turned Off.
Default Volume
Guards against high volume un-mutes.. To set or change the Default Volume, proceed as
follows:
1. Adjust the VSR-100 volume to the desired Default Volume.
2. Press and hold the MUTE button. While continuing to press the MUTE button, press
and hold the VOLUME DOWN button. (Note: Press the VOLUME DOWN button
very quickly pressing MUTE).
3. When the POWER SENSE LED (2) starts to blink, release both buttons. The Default
Volume level is set.
Note: The Default Volume will be activated whenever a manual or IR Volume command
is given. Also, if the pre-muted volume of the VSR-100 was higher than the Default
Volume level, and the VSR-100 is un-muted by any volume command, the VSR-100 will
be restored to the Default Volume level.

Override Volume
Provides a fixed volume level when the OVERRIDE port (13) is driven High, regardless of any other volume setting. It will also
un-mute a muted (Off) condition. This is useful when used in systems with Paging and/or Doorbell trigger control outputs. To
set or change the Override Volume, proceed as follows:
1. Adjust the VSR-100 volume to the desired Override Volume.
2. Press and hold the MUTE button. While continuing to press the MUTE button, press and hold the VOLUME UP button.
(Note: Press the VOLUME UP button very quickly after pressing MUTE).
3. When the POWER SENSE LED (2) starts to blink, release both buttons. The Override Volume level is now set.

VSR-100
IR Controlled Speaker-Level In-Wall Volume Control
The VSR-100 is a high powered 12-step speaker-level in-wall IR-controlled stereo volume control. It has Impedance
Match settings of 1X, 2X, and 4X and is designed for use with amplifiers up to 100 Watts of rated power output.
In addition to manual control of volume and mute, the VSR-100 features an IR receiver for remote control and also
allows IR data to be passed through for control of other system components. The VSR-100 also features IR input
porting so that external controllers can be hard wired for control of this device without using a “stick-on” IR emitter.
Included are the VSR-1 handheld Remote Control and the HDC1070 RJ45/CAT5 Interface Cable assembly.
The basic VSR-100 features and functionalities are as follows:
FEATURE DESCRIPTIONS (Refer to Fig. 1)
1. IR Receiver Sensor
2. Activity LED - Flashes when activated with IR commands and default level settings.
3. Volume Level LEDs – Shows 11 volume level settings at a glance.
4. Volume UP/Down Buttons – For manual volume adjustments.
5. Mute Button – For manual sound muting. When muted, Volume Level LEDs go off.
6. Decora Insert Plate – Included.
7. Metal Mounting Plate – Permits mounting to standard J-Boxes.
8. IR/Controller PCB
9. Level Switching Relays – Controlled relays select 11 volume levels plus Off.
10. Autoformers – Permit audio level settings and impedance matching to speakers.
11. Removable Screw-Down Speaker Connector – Connect these to system speakers.
12. Impedance Matching Jumpers – Permits proper impedance matching of multiple speaker pairs
to a single pair of amplifier channels. Refer to “IMPEDANCE MATCHING” below, for settings.
13. RJ45 IR/Control Port – Port for IR I/O, Override and Sense signals.
14. Removable Screw-Down Amplifier Connector – Connect these to system amplifier terminals.
15. Front Cover Plate – Not included.

IMPEDANCE MATCHING
The X1, X2 and X4 positions of the jumpers (item #12) permit proper load matching on each channel of the amplifier for
most types of speaker loading.
X1 position will reflect, for instance, a 4 Ohm load onto the amplifier, if one 4 Ohm speaker is used per channel.
X2 position will reflect a 4 Ohm load onto the amplifier, if two 4 Ohm speakers, in parallel, are used per channel..
X4 position will reflect a 4 Ohm load onto the amplifier, if four 4 Ohm speakers, in parallel, are used per channel.
If you are using 6 Ohm, 8 Ohm or other impedance speakers, the same principle applies. The X number simply tells you how
much the parallel impedance of the speakers are multiplied by.
If you are using 2 or more VSR-100’s for additional rooms, then you must consider the total loading on the amplifier. For
instance, when using 2 VSR-100’s with 2 pairs of 4Ohm speakers on each one, then you will need to set the jumpers on each
VSR-100 to the X4 position
MOUNTING
The VSR-100 fits into most 18 cu. in. rough-in J-boxes and P-rings. P-rings allow the best access and depth and should be
used where local building codes allow. DO NOT install the VSR-100 in the same electrical box as high voltage (120/240VAC)
devices such as dimmers, light switches, etc. as these devices will cause harmful interference and create buzzing, hum, or
other audio interference. Close proximity to high-voltage devices can also cause undesired IR operation.
Like any IR device, the VSR-100’s IR receiver is susceptible to interference from sunlight, plasma television radiation, neon light-
ing, CFLs and the like. Choose mounting locations that avoid these conditions.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
Speaker wire and CAT5 cable should be run from the main equipment location where the system’s amplifier is located to the
mounting location for each VSR-100. The speaker terminals on this unit will accommodate 14 to 24 AWG stranded copper
speaker wire. Runs that exceed 150 feet should use heavier gauge wire, but 16 or 18 AWG is usually sufficient. Check local
building codes for specific guidelines regarding in-wall wire runs. CAT5 cable is required when installing this unit to provide
Power, Override, Sense, IR In, and IR Out. 12V DC power must be connected to the VSR-100, via the RJ45 connector, for the
unit to function.
RJ45 CONNECTIONS
1. Use the HDC1070 pre-terminated RJ45 cables or crimp your
own using the color code and pin-outs shown.
2. Consult the following diagram for specific CAT5 wiring for
system operation.
3. Once proper connections are made at the head-end, plug
the RJ45 connector into the jack on the rear of the VSR-100.
4. Install the unit in the wall using the screws provided. Be
careful not to place tension on the CAT5 cable.
5. Test and adjust as necessary.

SPEAKER CONNECTIONS
1. First, be sure that the amplifier is powered down. Do not connect the RJ45 CAT5 connector to the VSR-100 at this point.
2. Strip back 1/4” of the insulation from each conductor of the speaker wire. Twist and verify that there are no frayed ends.
3. Remove the AMPLIFIER and SPEAKER connectors from the
volume control. Connect the L+, L-, R+, R- conductors from
the amplifier to the appropriate terminals on the AMPLIFIER
connector. Make sure to maintain proper +/- polarity!
4. Connect the wires from the speakers to the appropriate
terminals on the SPEAKER connector, again ensuring proper
+/- polarity.
5. Plug the AMPLIFIER and SPEAKER connectors back into the
VSR-100. Refer to Fig. 3.

SYSTEM CONNECTIONS
Fig. 4. shows a basic system connection diagram for the VSR-100.
Connection and Operation Notes:
1. Make connections using Fig. 4. as a guide.
2. IR control of the VSR-100 occurs with either direct IR at it’s sensor, or from the IRC-3.0 through the AT1-1.0 to the IR IN port.
3. IR control of other system components occurs through the VSR-100 sensor and
the IR OUT port, or the IRC-3.0 via the AT1-1.0 to the emitters on the components.
4. Override and Sense actions are not used in this illustration.
