Tips, Tricks, and Techniques for Better Results
Pyrography is the correct term for the technique more
commonly known as “wood burning”. The term means
the art of ‘drawing with re’. It is an ancient craft prac-
ticed throughout the world. Originally pokers were
heated in res and created rather crude results. During
the Victorian period the craft enjoyed it’s greatest popu-
larity. Victorian ladies developed various tools such as
ne steel rods similar to knitting needles and heated
them in a re or over a spirit lamp, allowing them to work
more skillfully and create ne designs. The rods would
lose their heat quickly and have to be returned to the re
for reheating, making the process slow and tedious.
Today Pyrography is enjoying renewed popularity due to
the advancement in wood burning irons, the variety of avail-
able tips and the vast assortment of surfaces to decorate.
Tips and Their Uses
Your new Weller woodburning kit comes with a wide variety of burning,
cutting, branding, and specialty tips. To get the most from your kit, follow
these instructions to create the results you want.
1.
Universal tip—multi-purpose tip. Hold the tip at various angles
for creating lines of varying widths.
2.
Dot tip—for making dots of various sizes and depths. Using this
tip, make light touches to your surface for ne dots. Hold the tip
on the surface for longer periods of time to create deep holes.
3.
Groove tip—for burning grooves of various depths. Move slowly
across your work to make deeper grooves.
Getting Started
Set up a safe work area. You can tape the iron holder to a piece of
ceramic tile. The tile is heavy enough to keep the iron stand from
tipping over while it protects the work surface. You will also need a
reproof container like a glass dish or metal lid to hold your various
tips while they are cooling. You will need a pair of needle nose pliers
with smooth jaws to remove the hot tips from the iron. Remember
that metal conducts heat very quickly. Never attempt to change a hot
tip with your ngers. Protect your work surface with aluminum foil, a
homosote work board, or a piece of plywood.
The best way to get started is to familiarize yourself with the iron,
the various tips and the patterns they create. See the “Tips and Their
Uses” section for an explanation of how to use each tip included with
your new kit.

Designs
You can adapt a variety of designs from almost any media. From
coloring books to garden manuals just about every item has been
captured as line art or a simple sketch. Once you have become familiar
with the iron and the patterns you can create using the various tips, it
will be easier for you to create your own designs. Use a copy machine
to reduce and enlarge designs to suit your project.
Transferring Designs
Tools needed:
Tracing paper
Pencil
Ruler
Low tack masking tape
Carbon paper
Place your pattern on the surface and secure with masking tape across
the top. Lift the pattern and place the carbon paper directly on the surface.
Reposition the pattern and lightly trace the design using a pencil.
Double check your design before removing the pattern to make sure
you have transferred the entire pattern. Use a ruler to trace straight lines.
Surfaces
A wide variety of surfaces are suitable for pyrography. Hardwoods such
as beech, sycamore, birch and hornbeam are most popular. Most craft
stores carry a good selection of these varieties.
Birch plywood works well and is available at home improvement
centers. You can also make your own tabletops and furniture using
plywood and decorate it with your new skills.
Smooth grained and light colored woods work best. Stay away from
dark, coarse grained hardwoods. Pines are not suitable because they
have too much sap causing it to burn and mar your patterns.
Cork, leather, some papers, and even wax candles make great design
surfaces. Check your craft store and woodworking shops for suitable
surfaces. Experiment! This is a hobby. That means you can just do it
because it’s fun.
Safety Tip
:
Caution should be taken when working with certain hardwoods
such as, English pressure treated or tropical woods. Avoid using
very thin plywood or veneer because they contain adhesives that
emit dangerous fumes when heated. Wear protective masks.
Coloreando los diseños

como paleta de colores, ya que no es necesario limpiarla después de usarla y
la pintura no penetra la super cie.
Si fuera posible, pruebe primero los colores y la técnica a aplicar, en
materiales descartables o en una parte muy pequeña o poco visible del
trabajo. El color se puede aplicar al diseño y también al fondo.
Aplicación de barniz
Para proteger el trabajo realizado, aplicar dos o tres capas de barniz brillante
o satinado. Es mejor usar un paño suave o una esponja, ya que el uso de un
pincel puede dejar pelos o marcas. Siga las instrucciones del fabricante del
barniz en lo referente a forma de aplicación, seguridad y tiempo de secado.

Mantener la herramienta alejada del alcance de los niños. Mantener el
soldador alejado de materiales in amables. Para prevenir quemaduras,
suponga siempre que la punta está caliente. Asegúrese de que la punta ni el
soldador nunca entren en contacto con el cordón eléctrico. Antes de efectuar
cualquier tarea con el soldador (como por ejemplo, cambio de punta),
asegúrese de que esté desenchufado y frío. No sumerja la herramienta en

Consumer Soldering Iron Warranty
Cooper Hand Tools warrants this product will be free from defects in
material and workmanship for a period of seven (7) years from the date
of purchase. No warranty is made with respect to products which have
been (a) altered, modi ed or repaired by anyone other than Cooper
Hand Tools; (b) subject to abuse, improper use, negligence, accident
or improper storage; (c) installed, used or maintained not in accor-
dance with normal practices or the instructions and speci cations
of Cooper Hand Tools; or (d) used in conjunction with any product,
device, component or system, that is either defective, the source of a
defect, or not reasonably intended to be used in conjunction with this
product. The foregoing limited warranty is exclusive and in lieu of all
other warranties, whether expressed, implied or statutory, including,
but not limited to, any warranty of merchantability or tness for any
particular purpose. The obligation of Cooper Hand Tools under this
limited warranty is expressly limited to repairing the product, refunding
the purchase price or replacing the product, at the sole and absolute
discretion of Cooper Hand Tools, at no charge to Buyer. The remedies
provided for herein shall constitute the sole recourse of Buyer against

Punta de sombreado—Esta es una punta cónica que, según la
posición en que se utilice, creará sombreado más claro o más oscuro.
6.
Puntas de marca en caliente—Estas puntas se aplican verticalmente
sobre la super cie de trabajo. Para hacer un diseño de nido, retirar
la punta también en dirección vertical.
7.
Punta de corte para estarcido—Esta punta se utiliza para cortar
formas en moldes de Mylar
®
u otro material para crear con
técnica de estarcido.
8.
Punta de transferencia de diseño—Para transferir diseños impresos
a la super cie de trabajo, proceder de la siguiente manera:
a)
Haga una copia del diseño en una impresora láser.
b)
Coloque la copia hacia abajo sobre la super cie de trabajo.
c)
Coloque la punta de transferencia en el soldador de
pirograbado y deje que la punta se caliente durante
aproximadamente cinco minutos.
d)
Con la punta de transferencia, frote lentamente la parte de
atrás del diseño con movimientos circulares, hasta que la
forma del diseño quede marcada en la super cie de trabajo.
e)
Ahora puede marcar térmicamente el diseño, directamente en
la super cie de trabajo.
9.
Punta de corte—Introduzca la hoja de corte en el mandril roscado y
luego enrosque el mandril en el cilindro del soldador, ajustándolo
rmemente. Esta punta especial se puede usar para cortar espuma
sintética, cuerda y otros materiales rígidos blandos.
Mantenga las puntas limpias para que siempre trabajen correctamente y
duren más. Es común que se acumule carbón en la punta, particularmente
si trabaja con maderas resinosas tal pino. En tal caso, limpiar las puntas

Ajout de couleurs à vos motifs

Ajoutez un peu d’eau à votre médium pour maintenir sa consistance. De la
peinture épaisse couvrirait votre modèle. Une plaque en mousse constitue
une excellente palette car elle ne nécessite pas de nettoyage et que les
peintures ne dégorgent pas dans la surface.
Testez vos couleurs et votre technique sur des rebuts si possible. Sinon,
sélectionnez l’emplacement le moins visible. De la couleur peut être ajoutée
aux motifs ou à l’arrière plan ou aux deux.
Application de vernis
Deux ou trois couches de vernis brillant ou satin protègeront votre œuvre
d’art. Utilisez un tissu doux ou une éponge plutôt qu’un pinceau qui peut
laisser des poils et des coups de pinceau sur son passage. Suivez les
instructions du fabricant concernant l’application, la sécurité et les durées
de séchage.
Mesures de sécurité

est un outil très sur et conforme à toutes les
réglementations de sécurité applicable en Amérique du Nord. Néanmoins,
comme tout appareil électrique, il doit être manipulé avec précaution.
N’oubliez jamais que la pointe de soudure et l’élément chauffant peuvent
atteindre des températures élevées. Suivez toujours ces simples règles de
sécurité. Tenez l’outil hors de portée des enfants. Maintenez votre fer à
souder à l’écart de tout matériau in ammable. Pour éviter des brûlures,
considérez toujours que la pointe est chaude. Assurez-vous que la pointe
de soudage chaude et l’élément chauffant ne touchent pas le cordon
d’alimentation électrique. Avant tout ajustement (retrait ou remplacement
d’une pointe, etc.) assurez-vous que le fer est débranché et froid. Ne plongez
pas l’outil dans un liquide quelconque. Travaillez toujours dans un endroit
bien ventilé. Après utilisation, débranchez le fer, laissez la pointe refroidir et
remisez-le dans un lieu sur. Le port de lunettes de sécurité est recommandé
pour éviter des blessures oculaires causées par des matériaux chauds.
