Function and application
Function: The HU1 holding unit can hold the piston rod in
a pneumatic cylinder in accordance with ISO 15552/
ISO 6432 in any position after a loss of pressure. The
mechanical clamping process does not affect the function
of the piston rod.
Holding: To lock the piston rod, you must exhaust the
compressed air connection (2) of the HU1 holding unit. The
integrated spring then actuates the mechanical clamping
jaws (3).
Releasing: To unlock the piston rod, you must pressurize
the compressed air connection (2) of the HU1 holding unit
with the minimum working pressure. This counteracts the
spring force and releases the clamping jaws from the
piston rod, and the rod is able to move freely.
6Assembly
WARNING
Danger of injury due to assembly of the product while
the system is running!
Assembly of the product while the system is running
can cause major injuries from moving machinery.
O Bring the system mode into a state in which working
movements are no longer possible. Wait until all
moving machine parts come to a standstill, and
protect the system against being switched on.
Danger of injury due to suspended useful loads!
Useful loads that are kept suspended by compressed
air pose a danger if they are not secured before the
pressure is switched off in the system.
O Guide the useful loads into a safe position or remove
them from the system.
O You may only then switch off the pressure in the
relevant section of the system.
Danger of injury due to stored energy (compressed
air)!
When the system is at a standstill, there is still a danger
due to stored energy (compressed air).
O Generally avoid storing compressed air.
O Exhaust the cylinder on which the HU1 holding unit
is to be installed.
O Remove all other sources of danger in the
immediate work area that may result from stored
energy in the system.

7
Any mounting orientation may be used for the HU1 holding
unit.
The compressed air connection has an assembly screw.
O Do not remove this screw until shortly before
connecting the compressed air supply.
Mounting the HU1 holding unit on an ISO
cylinder
To mount the HU1 holding unit as an individual component
on an ISO cylinder, proceed as follows:
1. Slide the holding cartridge (1) into the mounting flange
(3
).
2. Remove the nut (7) from the cylinder piston rod to
avoid damaging the scraper (6).
3. Slide the holding cartridge (1) and mounting flange (3
)
together onto the cylinder piston rod.
NOTICE
Danger of piston rod slipping and destroying the
mechanical clamping jaws!
Transverse loads on the piston rod will destroy the
clamping jaws.
O Ensure that the piston rod is only loaded in the
direction of movement.
Extensive wear on the piston rod and clamping jaws!
If the locked piston rod is moved against the effective
clamping forces, this will result in wear on the piston
rod and the clamping jaws.
O Ensure that the static holding force of the HU1
holding unit is not exceeded at any time. Otherwise,
this may lead to unexpected movement of the piston
rod.

W All compressed air connections and control elements
must remain freely accessible after installation.
W The HU1 holding unit must be attached in such a way
that it cannot be loosened by jolts, vibrations, or the
like.
Preparing for installation
1. Stop system operation and protect it against being
switched o
n.
2. Return all suspended loads to a statically secure
position or remove them from the system.
3. If required, exhaust stored compressed air
from
system parts in the immediate work area.
4. Secure self-turning
or other movable system parts
before starting installation.
Installing the cylinder with the holding unit in the
system
1. Position the cylinder with pre-mounted HU1 holding
un
it at the designated location in the system.
2. Install the cylinder tension-free in the system using the
appropriate cylinder mountings. Observe the stated
tightening torques.
3. Remove any protective caps from the cyli
nder
compr
essed air connections.
4. Remove the assembly screw from the HU1 holding unit
and insert a compressed air connection.
Ø 20-32 (ISO 6432/ISO 15552): M5
Ø 40-100 (ISO 15552): G 1/8
5. Connect the tubing to the compressed air connections
for the HU1 holding unit and the cylinder. Ensur
e that
the
connections and tubing lines are free of di
rt
particles and fo
reign matter.
ISO 15552 ISO 6432
7 Commissioning and
Operation
Starting up the system
1. Switch the system on according to the system
s
pecifications.
2. After switching on, check immediately that the cylinder
and HU1 holding unit are working correctly.
8 Care and Maintenance
O Clean the piston rod after every 200,000 strokes or if
there is visible contamination.
Shorter inspection intervals are required in the case of:
W High temperatures
W Unavoidably excessive contamination
W Application near fat-dissolving liquids or vapors
WARNING
Danger of accidents due to uncontrolled movement of
the piston rod!
If only one cylinder chamber is supplied with pressure
when releasing the clamping jaws, the trapped air
volume expands suddenly and causes the piston rod to
jump (retracting or extending).
O
Use a suitable control to make sure that the cylinder
equipped with the HU1 holding unit is actuated in such
a manner that pressure is applied to both cylinder
chambers when the clamping jaws are released.
The piston surface area difference may lead to
undesired piston rod movements.
O Before pressurizing the HU1 holding unit, make sure
that there is a force equilibrium on the piston of the
drive cylinder.
O Configure the controls accordingly.
Excessive wear of the HU1 holding unit due to
impermissible dynamic loads!
Using the HU1 holding unit as a dynamic brake will
exceed the load limits of the unit.
O Never use the HU1 holding unit as a dynamic brake.
NOTICE
Damage to seals and scraper due to aggressive
detergents!
Aggressive detergents may damage the material of the
seals and scrapers.
O Only use mild detergents.
O Do not use the HU1 holding unit in the food industry
if there is a danger of contact with the aggressive
detergents commonly used in that sector.
