Installation Summary
There are four basic steps to installing the RAYCOM Cellular properly. These
steps are summarized below and explained in detail in the remainder of this
manual.
Step 1. Choose an Antenna and its Location
The type of antenna and its location can be one of the
biggest factors in your installation. Height, gain, obstruc-
tions, and the correct antenna cable and length can all
affect reception and operation.
Step 2. Choose an Installation Location and Make
the Cable Runs
The RAYCOM unit is not waterproof and needs to be
mounted where it will not be exposed to splash or
spray. Below decks or behind a console is recom-
mended.
Try to find a location that is close to the DC power
buss to minimize the length of the power cable.
If more than one piece of phone equipment will be
connected, try to select a central location to reduce
the length of the cable runs.
There should be adequate ventilation.
It should be as far apart as possible from any devices
that may induce interference such as motors, generators, etc.
Step 3. Phone Number Setup
If you did not have your RAYCOM programmed with a cellular phone num-
ber at your place of purchase, you need to contact your preferred Cellular
Service Provider for activation or you may contact American Wireless.
American Wireless can provide you with your cellular phone number, assist
you with the programming, and provide operational support if you choose
to be one of their subscribers.
Your RAYCOM can be programmed using any standard household tele-
phone, also known as a POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) telephone.
Step 4. Installation and Connection
Once all your cables are run and you have installed your phone equipment,
it is time to install the RAYCOM itself. Connect the power, antenna, and
phone equipment before final mounting of the unit.

Step 1. Choose an Antenna and its Location
Your RAYCOM Cellular receives operating commands from the cellular network
and relies upon signal strength for proper operation. Therefore, proper loca-
tion and installation of the antenna is critical for call quality.
Antenna Location Tips:
Line-of-sight is critical to optimizing your operating distance, so the higher
the antenna, the better the range. But there are other factors as well.
If you choose a high-gain antenna, remember that its beam is more
focusedthan a unity gain antenna. A high gain antenna mounted high on
a mast in rolling seas may cause the signal to fade in and out. Ask your
marine dealer which antenna is best suited for your application.
The antenna cable should not be spliced and should not be run next to elec-
trically noisy devices such as generators, power cables, etc. The cable may
be shortened but the final length is critical to obtaining full power output.
Check with your dealer or consult a professional installer if you are not confi-
dent with antenna installation.
Some antennas do not come with connectors so insure that you have a
TNCtype connector to install on the cable.
Mount the antenna in your pre-selected location and make the cable run to
the location of the RAYCOM unit. Install the connector on the cable.
Step 2. Choose and Installation Location
and Make the Cable Runs
In this step you will need to select the best location for
the unit using the criteria outlined in the Summary sec-
tion on the previous page. Then hook up the provided
DC power cord to your 12 Volt DC buss or marine bat-
tery and run the Modular Phone Cord from your POTS
phone(s) to the selected location for the unit. This unit
does not have an ON/OFF switch so a separate breaker
on your electronics DC panel is recommended.
1) Your RAYCOM Cellular power cord is voltage regulated
so that as long as the voltage source
supplies 10 to 18VDC, the output of
the power cord will be 12VDC.
2) The (+) wire of the power cord must
be connected to the POSITIVE (+)
terminal of the power source and the
(-) wire connected to the NEGATIVE (-)
terminal of the power source. Once
connected, plug the 2.5mm barrel plug
into the power plug on the bottom side
of the unit. The LED indictor on top of the unit should
illuminate red. If the LED does not illuminate, insure that
there is power available at the power source and the polarity is correct.
3) If the length of the supplied power cable is not sufficient to reach your DC
power source, it can be extended by adding more cable as necessary.
However for power cable runs longer than 15 feet, larger wire diameter size
should be used to prevent line loss.
4) Run the Modular Phone Cord from your POTS telephone to the RAYCOM
location.
IMPORTANT!
Make sure the wiring from the
telephone equipment to your
RAYCOM
is properly protected
from all transient voltages,
including lightning.

Step 3. Phone Number Setup
If your RAYCOM Cellular was not programmed at your place of purchase, you
need to contact a cellular provider to set up an account. You will need to tell
them that the RAYCOM is an analogue system and works on the AMPS format.
If you do not have a preferred local provider, you can contact American
Wireless at PH: (800) 422-2394 or FAX: (800) 422-2039. American Wireless
can provide cellular activations through many of the available Cellular
Service Providers. They can help you select a service plan, set up the
account for your RAYCOM, provide the MIN (Mobile Identification Number)
which is the 10-digit phone number and SID (Service Identification Number),
step you through the programming process, and answer any questions you
may have. Their operating hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time,
Monday through Friday, Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. PST.
NOTE: American Wireless provides activations only. Any questions
relating to marine installation, repair, sales, or warranty should be
directed to Raytheon’s Product Support department as listed at the
beginning of this manual. Cellular service questions should be directed
to the selected service provider.
If you do not feel comfortable performing the programming yourself, you can
bring this manual and your RAYCOM to one of the retail offices of your
selected cellular service provider.
If you wish to program the unit yourself and use your local provider, you will
need to get the MIN and SID from them before programming. With this
information you can program your RAYCOM using any standard POTS tele-
phone and the following instructions.

Optional A-Key (Authentication Code) Programming
Depending upon your cellular service provider, you may be required to enter
an Authentication Code (A-Key) before you make or receive any calls. Contact
your service provider to determine whether A-Key is required.
IMPORTANT!
For security reasons, your complete A-Key is never transmitted over the
phone. However, you should keep the number in a safe place to prevent
counterfeiting, fraud or cloning.

STEP 3. PHONE NUMBER SETUP
The A-Key is a cellular system solution to prevent cloning, counterfeiting and
cellular fraud. Its a unique, 6- to 26-digit code provided by your service
provider that validates your MIN (Mobile Identification Number) and ESN
(Electronic Serial Number) before you make or receive calls. Once youve
entered the A-Key, your RAYCOM automatically verifies the code with the cel-
lular provider before every call. Theres no need to re-program the unit, unless
you switch to a new service provider or change your MIN.
Use the following key sequence to program the A-Key:
Press: # * 27 * <A-Key> #
The < > brackets represent your 6- to 26-digit A-Key (Authentication code),
which is supplied by your cellular service provider.

Step 4. Installation and Connection
Now that you have selected the location and have run all of the required
cabling, it is time to install the RAYCOM itself. But first lets make sure all of
the connections are good.
1) Screw in the antenna connector to the TNC jack on the RAYCOM, plug in
the power connector, and plug in the RJ-11 (phone) plug into the RJ-11 jack
on the bottom of the unit.
2) The LED indicator on the top of the unit should illuminate red at first. If
you are within range of a cellular tower, the LED should turn green within a
minute or two which indicates sufficient signal strength.
3) Once the indicator goes green, pick up the connected POTS telephone and
listen for a dial tone.
If these conditions are met, your antenna installation and connec-
tions were done correctly. If any of these conditions were not met,
refer to the Troubleshooting Section at the end of this manual.
To install the unit, perform the following:
4) Hold the mounting bracket against the surface where the RAY-
COM will be mounted and mark two holes
for the mounting screws.
5) Remove the bracket and drill the two
holes.
6) Install the two supplied pan-head mount-
ing screws (provided in the Lateral Support
Bracket kit) into the holes leaving about
1/16(1.5mm) gap between the under-side
of the screw head and the bulkhead or deck.
7) Attach the slotted mounting bracket to the
back of the RAYCOM using the short machine
screws provided. We recommend you use
Loctite or a similar adhesive on the threads.
Insure the bracket is properly oriented for
RAYCOM C
ELLULAR

15
INSTALLATION AND CONNECTION
your intended installation. For example, if the unit is being mounted vertically
on a bulkhead with the antenna jack pointing upwards, the bracket needs to
be installed with the slots pointing upward.
NOTE: If the lateral support mount is used, the slotted bracket must
be installed on the RAYCOM with the slots pointing in the same direc-
tion as the antenna jack. Otherwise the lateral mount can not provide
the required tension to keep the RAYCOM in place in rough seas.
8) Remove the power, phone, and antenna
plugs if connected. Align the holes on the
mounting bracket with the two wall-mounted
screws and slide the unit onto the screws. If the
RAYCOM slides on easily, remove the unit and
tighten the wall-mounted screws slightly.
Repeat this procedure until it requires a mod-
erate amount of force to slide the unit onto the screws.
This will insure your RAYCOM stays securely in place.
Slide the unit off of the wall-mount screws.
9) Reconnect the power and phone connections.
Insure they are routed through either the channel on
the bottom of the unit or out the slot adjacent to the
connector recess. Now slide the RAYCOM back onto
the wall-mount screws.
10) If the unit is being mounted vertically, the lateral
support mount may not be necessary depending on
how much motion your vessel encounters. If horizontally mounted, the lateral
support is recommended for all installations. If the lateral support is required,
proceed to step 11. If not, reconnect the antenna connector and the installa-
tion is complete.
11) Align the large hole of the lateral support bracket with the TNC antenna
jack and slide the bracket towards the unit until it makes contact and mark
the two holes for the mounting screws.
12) Remove the bracket and drill the two holes for the hold-down screws.
Replace the lateral bracket over the TNC connector and install the bracket with
the two screws provided.

RAYCOM OPERATION
Fax/Data Transmission
Automatic Level Setting (ALS)
When your RAYCOM detects a fax or modem call, it automatically adjusts the
Transmit and Receive audio levels for optimum data transmission. After the
fax/data transmission is completed, the unit resets the audio levels to their
previous settings.
Fax/Modem Compatibility
Your RAYCOM is compatible with most Fax
machines and computer modems. Depending
upon the type of modem used and the cellular
networks data capability, the Fax baud rate is
typically 7.2K bps or better and data is 4.8K bps
or better.
In the event that your service provider requires a
PIN to be input after the number is dialed, you will
need to adjust your dialing string to include the
PIN number. For a computer modem, enter the
phone number followed by 4 or more commas
and then the PIN (i.e. 16035559876,,,,1234). The
commas instruct the modem to wait 1 second for
each comma before dialing the PIN number. A Fax
modem works in a similar fashion except the pausekey is used in place of
commas. You may have to experiment with the number of commas or pauses
but 4 or 5 will usually do the trick.
Variable Dial Time (Auto SEND Delay) Option
When you place a call, your RAYCOM Cellular automatically sends the phone
number over the cellular network after you dial the last digit just like a land-
line phone. However, to make sure you have enough time to dial the last digit, a
3-second Auto SEND Delay is programmed into the unit. This delay also affects
Special Functions such as Call Forwarding (see Special Cellular Services below).
You can set the Auto SEND Delay from 2 to 20 seconds using an ordinary
tone-dial (DTMF) phone, which is sometimes referred to as a POTS (Plain Old
Telephone Service) phone. Note: you cannot change the delay while youre
making a call.
How To Adjust the Auto SEND Delay - Pick up the telephone handset and
listen for dial tone. Then, enter the User-Programming mode by pressing:
