1.FUEL SELECTION
The36-BWisdesignedtoburnnaturalwoodonly.
Higherefficienciesandloweremissionsgenerally
resultwhenburningairdriedseasonedhardwoods,as
comparedtosoftwoodsortogreenorfreshlycut
hardwoods.DONOT BURN THEFOLLOWING:
treatedwood,coal,garbage,solvents,coloredpapers,
ortrash.Burningthesemayresultinthereleaseof
toxicfumesandmaypoisonorrenderthecatalytic
ineffective.Burningcoal,cardboard,orloosepaper
canproducesoot,orlargeflakesofcharorflyashthat
cancoatthecombustor,causingsmokespillageinto
theroom,renderingthecombustorineffective.
2.BUILDING ANDMAINTAINING A FIRE
A)Openthemanualcontrolfullybypullingitout;the
draftcontrolislocatedbetweentheblowerandash
panabovethehearth.
B) Therearetwostartupslideslocatedbelowthemain
door.Opentheslidesasfaraspossibletoopenthe
startupdraftcompletely. Thisfeatureistobeused
onlywhenyourunitisstartingsluggishlyandonly
duringthefirst5minutesofstartupandreloading.
Closeslidesduringnormaloperation.
C)Placeabaseofcrumpleduncolorednewspaperin
thebottomofthestove.Laypiecesofkindlingontop
ofthenewspaperandlightit.
D) Asthekindlingbeginstoburn,addseverallarger
piecesofwooduntilthefireisburningwell. Atthis
point,regularsizelogsmaybeadded.
NOTE:Untilthefireisburningwell,leavethedraft
controlsinthedoorfullyopen.

F)Regulatetheheatoutputofthestovebyadjusting
thedraftcontrolstoallowalargerfireandviceversa. A
shortperiodofexperimentationwiththecontrol
settingswillallowyoutoregulatetheheatoutputto
keepyourhomecomfortable.

followinginstructionstobehelpfulinoperatingthe36-
BW:
*Forahighormaximumburn,fullyopenthemanual
draftcontrolcompletely.
*Foramediumhighburn,openthemanualdraft
controlapproximately3/4ofaninchandoperatethe
bloweronlowspeed. *Foramediumlowburn,open
themanualdraftcontrolapproximately1/4ofaninch
andoperatethebloweronthelowspeed.
*Foralowburn,completelyclosethemanualdraft
controlandoperatethebloweronlowspeed.
Thebloweristobeoperatedonthelowspeed.
3.OPERATING THEBLOWER
Theblowermaybeoperatedontheautomaticor
manualsetting.Onthemanualsettingtheblowerwill
operateuntilturnedoff.(Theblowercannotbeturned
offifthestoveishot.)Ontheautomaticsettingthe
blowerwillcomeonautomaticallywhenthestoveis
hotandwillshutoffwhenthestovecoolsdown.

4.REFUELING THESTOVE
A)Beforeattemptingtoaddfueltothestove,OPEN
thedampercontrolfullybypullingitallthewayout.
Thisallowsthechimneytocarryawaytheadditional
smokethatoccurswhenthedoorisopen.
B)DONOT OVERLOAD THESTOVE.Normally,three
orfourlogswillprovideheatforseveralhours.Never
operatethisstovewhereportionsglowredhot.
5. ACHIEVINGCATALYST LIGHT OFFFROM A COLD
START
Thetemperatureinthestoveandthegassesentering
thecombustormustberaisedtobetween500and700
degreesF.forcatalyticactivitytobeinitiated.During
thestartupofacoldstove,amediumtohighfiringrate
mustbemaintainedforabout20minutes. Thisensures
thatthestove,catalystandfuelareallstabilizedatthe
properoperatingtemperatures.Eventhoughitis
possibletohavegastemperaturesreach600degrees
F.withintwotothreeminutesafterthefireisstarted,if
thefireisallowedtodiedownimmediately,itmaygo
out,orthecombustormaystopworking.Oncethe
combustorstartsworking,heatgeneratedbyburning
smokewillkeepitworking.
