JLM TMP-8 User manual

  • Hello! I've reviewed the user manual for the JLM AUDIO TMP8 Microphone Preamplifier. This document details the setup, features, and specifications of the 8-channel preamplifier, including its transformer inputs, DI options, pad and phase switches, phantom power, and soft limiters. I'm ready to answer your questions about the TMP8.
  • What type of inputs does the TMP8 have?
Can I use condenser microphones with the TMP8?
What is the purpose of the pad switch?
What does the phase reverse switch do?

JLM TMP8 OVERVIEW
Congratulations on purchasing this quality product from JLM AUDIO.
The JLM TMP8 is a state of the art 8-channel mic-pre. It’s cased in machine
punched Stainless Steel and is 19” rack width and 1 Unit (44mm) high. One
feature that makes the JLM TMP8 so unique is its extremely shallow depth,
measuring a mere 75mm of rack depth or 95mm deep including the knobs
featured on the front panel.
The JLM TMP8 produces a uniquely transparent sound that is minimalist and
it functions with an extreme signal to noise ratio. The JLM TMP8 has become
recognised for its tight fat low end and silky top end which enhances its ability
to represent a variety of sources from instruments to voice – capturing the full
body and texture of what is being recorded. With sophisticated aesthetic
qualities, the highest of production standards and a superior design, the JLM
TMP8 is the perfect addition to any professional studio set-up.

POWER
The JLM TMP8 can be powered by most 48v 500mA Regulated power
supplies. We have included a 110v/240v Mains Voltage 48Vdc Switch Mode
Power Supply (SMPS) with the TMP8. The Mains voltage range for your
country needs to be selected by a switch in the side of the SMPS unit before
plugging the unit in. Then the SMPS is plugged into the 5pin gold XLR
connector located on left hand side of the back panel (9), it can then be
connected to the mains power by a IEC standard power cord with your
countries power plug on the end and switched on by using the ‘power’ switch
located on the side of the SMPS. Turn on the power switch on the right hand
side of the JLM TMP8 and a green LED will light up underneath the ‘power’
switch on the front of the unit.
Note 1 The SMPS if on when the TMP8 is switched off will sometimes make a
soft hissing noise which will go way when the TMP8 is switched on. This is
normal for the SMPS.
FRONT PANEL
There are three push on/off switches, one socket and one dial per channel of
the JLM TMP8. There functions are:
(1) – DI Jack – this socket on channels 1 and 2 is a 1Meg high impedance
unbalanced Fet buffered DI input for Guitars and Piezo Bugs. This jack on
channels 3 to 8 is a 1k low Impedance balanced DI input for Dynamic
Microphones, Keyboards and Synths. Inserting into any of the eight DI
sockets automatically disconnects the rear XLR input for that channel until the
jack is removed. All DI inputs still have the audio transformer in their audio
path and Phase and Pad functions work on these inputs as well.
(2) – 48V Switch – this switch facilitates the activation of phantom power for
Condenser Microphones and active DIs, providing a regulated and smooth
power source to the rear XLR input of each channel. A red LED (2A) at the
top left will light up when phantom power is activated.
(3) – Pad Switch – the Pad Switch inserts a 20dB pad in front of the input
transformer. This will allows for microphones running up to line level to
function when inserted without any clipping or transformer overload occurring.
(4) – Phase Reverse Switch – the phase switch reverses the phase of the
input signal by 180, effectively swapping pin 2 and pin 3 of the XLR input to
correct bass cancellation between out of phase microphone placement and
different microphone types.
(5) – Gain Control – There are 41 click positions on the Gain Control Pot from
20dB to 60dB. The gain dial can be used to adjust the gain of the microphone
preamplifier. The dial is very responsive and allows for detailed incremental
adjustment of the gain.
(6) – Soft Limit Function – The Soft Limiters are effective over all eight
channels and can be gauged by watching the blue LED. This light gives an
indication to the level at which the Soft Limit is operating – the light will
become brighter as the Soft Limiter is driven harder. (The Blue Soft Limit LED
comes standard with the clip indicator set to +29dBM to show that the mic-pre
is about to clip as it runs out of head room at +30dBM. The Blue Soft limit
light, when set as a clip indicator will rarely light under normal circumstances.)
(7) – The TMP8 comes with a White Chinagraph wax Pencil for writing on the
scratch pads which are the black rectangles numbered 1 to 8 on the front
panel. Only use chinagraph pencils to write on the pads and a slightly damp
cloth to remove any writing afterwards.
BACK PANEL
Like the front panel, the rear panel of the TMP8 is laid out with ease of access
and functionality in mind.
(8) – The soft limiter setting 3.5mm socket is locked below the input and
output of each channel. If you have asked for the limiters to be set to match
you’re A/D then there will be a pack of 8 x 3.5mm Jacks supplied that can be
plugged in to set the limiters to the right level.
(9) – Power Connector – The rear panel also features the power 5pin XLR (9),
with the switch for turning power on/off being located on the front panel
directly in front of the power input.
(10) – Line Outputs – There are 8 gold 3 pin male XLR connectors on the rear
panel directly behind there associated front panel controls.
(11) – Mic/Line inputs – There are 8 gold 3 pin female XLR connectors on the
rear panel directly behind there associated front panel controls.
