1. Introduction
Congratulations! You have just bought a high quality
product by PÖTTINGER. Thank you very much for your
confidence.
The present operation manual will help you make yourself
familiar with your new 8-wheel chassis. It is indispensable
to thoroughly study the present operation manual. Please
observe the important advices concerning handling and
maintenance. In doing so, you will avoid unnecessary
accidents and repair work.
We wish you a lot of success with your 8-wheel chassis
and thank you for your confidence.

2. Product liability and
information obligation
The product liability obliges both manufacturer and dealer
to submit the operation manual when selling a device and
train the customer at the machine by pointing out the
operation, safety and maintenance instructions.
Even if the machine is sold later by the customer, the
operation manual shall be submitted. The person taking
over the machine shall be made aware of the mentioned
instructions.
3. Type label
The type label is located front left of the 8-wheel chassis.
Please copy this data to your operation manual!
4. Guarantee
The guarantee period is one year and begins on the day
of the delivery. The guarantee is granted exclusively to the
original buyer fulfilling his payment duties.
Guarantee work is refundable only if we or our sales part-
ners are informed of the damage and give a respective
repair order.
Guarantee claims can be considered only with the faulty
parts being returned to the manufacturer.
Damage occurring due to inadequate maintenance, wear,
wrong handling or overstress is not subject to the guaran-
tee. Our guarantee obligation will also expire if no original
PÖTTINGER spare parts are used or if modifications are
carried out by third persons.

5. Warning labels
The manufacturer’s CE label repre-sents the conformity of
the machine with the regulations of the machine directive
and other EC regulations.
- Observe the operation manual and safety instructions
before starting up the device!
- Tightening moment of the tire bolts M18x1.5 270
Nm!
- Tighten the tire bolts after the first 10 operating hours
and also after the first 10 operating hours after a change
of tires!
- Check the tire bolts every 50 hours!
- Caution – moving parts!
- Never grab in the zone of crushing danger as long as
any parts are moving or the tractor engine is running!
6. Advices for working and driving safety
- The 8-wheel chassis was designed for the respective
trailer type. The utilisation of this chassis with other
trailers and modifications without the consent of the
manufacturer are not admissible. In any of these cases,
we will not take over any liability!
- Original parts and accessories are specially designed
for this machine. We explicitly state that only original
parts and accessories are checked and released by
us.
- The installation and/or utilisation of other products may
therefore negatively affect the design characteristics
of your vehicle. We cannot be held responsible for any
damage occurring due to the utilisation of other parts
or accessories.
- All safety devices shall be installed and in impeccable
condition. Damaged safety covers and safety devices
shall be renewed in due time.
- Before starting the work, the operator shall make himself
familiar with all operational devices and their functions.
It is too late to do this while working! (Refer to chapter
Start-up!).
- Check the vehicle for traffic and operational safety
before each start.

6.1 Driving off-the-road and on the
clamp silo
Danger of tilting on steep terrain!
When driving in the clamp silo and on terrain, be aware
of edges, ditches and loose underground! High danger of
tilting with no load on the tire edges of the outer tires!
6.2. Driving on the road
A particular danger on the road are sloping road verges.
Centrifugal forces resulting from fast cornering can have
a negative impact on the stability.
When driving on the road with the speed exceeding 25
km/h it is recommended to block the trailing axle.
Blocking the trailing axle will lead to a
higher smoothness of running and higher
safety!
It is not
allowed
to drive in too
steep a terrain!

Faro / Primo) to the tractor
8.1 Coupling of the hydraulic hoses
8.1.1 Hydraulic system trailer
The automatic height control requires an oil supply of
3l/min. The required amount is directly supplied from the
on-board hydraulic system of the trailer.
If the trailer is not supplied with enough
oil, the automatic height control does not
work. The failure of the height control may
have a negative impact on the running and
braking performance of the trailer!

8.1.2 Hydraulic trailing axle
The trailing axle is equipped with a blocking cylinder. The
blocking cylinder enables the centring of the wheels for
reverse motion or the blocking of the steering function for
driving fast on the road.
The blocking function requires at least one single-acting
control valve with float position. For the function of the
trailing axle the control valve shall be blocked in its float
position. Switch the connection to pressure for centring
and blocking the trailing axle.
The hydraulic piping for the trailing axle
shall always be coupled!
It is possible to integrate the blocking function of the
trailing axle in the LBS. In this case, no separate piping
will be coupled!
8.2 Coupling of the braking system
8.2.1 Compressed air braking system
Refer to operation manual PÖTTINGER!
8.2.2 Hydraulic braking system
Connect the hydraulic hose to the respective tractor
coupling. The stated braking ratio will be reached at
125 bar!
8.3 Electric System
The automatic height control function requires the power
supply of the steering. Connect the plug of the on-board
supply or the plug of the steering to the tractor.

8.1 Coupling of the hydraulic hoses
8.1.1 Hydraulic system trailer
The automatic height control requires an oil supply of

power supply!
8.3 Electric System

9. Start-up
9.1 Checks before each start
- Check the safety devices for damage and correct
hold!
- Check the screw-bolt joints and pin locks!
- Check the tires and tire bolts!
- Check the tightness of the hydraulic system.
Worn out hoses and conduits shall be exchanged
immediately!
9.2 Checks before departure
- Remove chock blocks
- Loosen the handbrake completely and fold
back the crank handle
- Air brake: Adjust the load governor to the
load (automatic ALB), activate the loosening
position of the brake valve (refer to operation
manual PÖTTINGER)

10. Operation
Please note that the tire equipment of
the chassis will always jut out laterally of
the trailer! It is dangerous and will cause
expensive damage to drive towards the
trailer from the side!
10.1 Hydraulic suspension with
automatic height control
The function of the height control requires hydraulic and
electrical power supply! The electric system and the oil
supply for the trailer remain active even when driving on
the road.
With tractors containing hydraulic pumps with stabilized
power supply it may be necessary to switch off the electric
and hydraulic systems when driving on the road.
10.2 Trailing axle
For the reverse speed and for driving on
roads at more than 25 km/h the trailing axle
must be blocked! It may be necessary to
block the axle for other difficult situations,
too!
10.3 Load adaptation valve of the brake
system
The adjustments of the load adaptation
valve shall be adapted to the trailer
load. Only so the brake function can be
assured!
11. Parking of the trailer
- Place the choke blocks underneath
- Tighten the handbrake
- Lower the support foot
- Air brake: Loosening position of the brake valve
- Uncouple the brake conduits, hydraulic and electrical
connections
- Check the tightness of the hydraulic system. Worn out
hoses and conduits shall be exchanged immediately!

12.2.2. Suspension system
During the annual mainte-nance, the hydraulic suspen-
sion is rinsed and aerated in order to supply the sealing
elements of the spring cylinders with new oil and to avoid
any air bubbles.
Ensure the power supply: Volume flow of the hydraulic
oil min. 4l/min!
1. Switch-over the steering to manual operation (A)
2. Fully extract and then lower again the spring cylinders,
both suspension systems (B, C)
3. Aerate at the left and right measuring points of the
hydraulic circuit.
Repeat this action 5 times!
In the end switch over the steering to Automatic again.
The chassis moves automa-tically in the centre position
of the spring cylinders!
12.2 Hydraulic system
Hydraulic oil is an environmental hazard!
Immediately seal any leakage. Worn out
conduits and hoses shall be exchanged.
Emerged hydraulic oil shall be safely
disposed of.
12.2.1 Conduits and hoses
Daily: Check the tightness of the hydraulic hoses and
conduits. Worn out conduits and hoses shall be ex-
changed. If necessary, the screwed connections shall
be re-tightened.
Exchange hoses and conduits shall meet the technical
requirements of the manufacturer!

12.2.3 Gas storage tanks
All gas storage tanks show a small pressure drop after a
certain time. The loss of gas can be up to 5% per year.
The gas pressure shall be checked every two years and
the filling shall be completed!
Maintenance work at the gas storage tank
shall be carried out by experts only!
A special filling and checking device is necessary to
check the gas pressure and to refill the storage tank. For
checking the gas filling, the oil side of the storage tank
shall be pressure-free. Therefore the spring cylinders
need to be lowered completely with the manual mode
of the control device. Pre-stress of the gas storage tank:
20 bar +/-2 bar!
The storage tank shall be filled with nitrogen only. The
utilisation of oxygen or air may cause explosions!
12.2.4 Pressure control valve of the suspension
systems
The suspension circuits are equipped with pressure control
valves which absorb pressure peaks by blows. The valves
are positioned in the hydraulic block at the chassis front.
The pick-up pressure of the valves shall be checked every
year! Procedure:
1. Connect a manometer to the backside of the measuring
point of the left suspension circuit
2. Fully extract the spring cylinders by aid of the manual
steering mode until the pressure control valve is
triggered.
3. Read out the manometer: psoll= 170 +/-10 bar
4. Repeat this action for the right side!
12.3. Brake system
12.3.1 Air braking system
1. Daily check the tightness of the system. Worn out hoses
and conduits shall be exchanged!
2. Daily drain the air tank. For the procedure refer to
operation manual Pöttinger PÖTTINGER!
3. Clean the conduit filters every 3 months. For the
procedure refer to operation manual PÖTTINGER!
12.3.2 Hydraulic braking system
Daily check the tightness of the system. Worn out hoses
and conduits shall be exchanged.
12.3.3 Handbrake
If necessary, re-adjust the adjusting screws of the ca-
ble.

- Check radial bearings, bearing clearance: Lift the axle
from the ground until the wheel turns free. Check the
clearance by shaking the wheel!
- Brake: Check wear, check brake lining and drum

- Check brake lever, lever path: The maximum lever path
when braking shall be below 45 mm!
12.5 Supporting structure and connections
Check the supporting structure and connecting elements
every 4 weeks for fissures and clearing!
12.6 Lubrication plan
The entire axle structure is equipped with maintenance-free
joints. The sliding surfaces of the steering and the lateral
guiding of the axle shafts must not be lubricated!
12.6.1. Brake linkage
The only grease nipples are located at the axle. Lubricate
the grease nipples at the brake lever every 15‘000 km,
however at least once per year!
12.6.2. Lubrication of the wheel hub
The grease filling of the wheel hub shall be checked and
exchanged every 60’000km. This work shall be carried
out by an expert workshop!

A re-adjustment is only necessary for mechanical adjusting
levers. Automatic adjusting levers (ABS) re-adjust the path
automatically!
Caution: Re-adjustment of the brake lever at the hexagon
head (1). Automatic adjusting levers cannot be turned back.
In case of a too strong re-adjustment, the lever needs to
be dismounted!
12.5 Supporting structure and connections
Check the supporting structure and connecting elements
every 4 weeks for fissures and clearing!
12.6 Lubrication plan
The entire axle structure is equipped with maintenance-free
joints. The sliding surfaces of the steering and the lateral
guiding of the axle shafts must not be lubricated!
12.6.1. Brake linkage
The only grease nipples are located at the axle. Lubricate
the grease nipples at the brake lever (and the brake linkage
[automatic linkage adjustment]) every 15‘000 km, however
at least once per year!

13. Technique
13.1 Pendulum equalizer
The 8-wheel chassis has an excellent ground performance.
This feature is the basis for optimum and low ground
pressure!

13.2 Hydraulic suspension with
automatic height control (option)
The hydraulic suspension is divided into two subsystems,
direction of motion left and right. The two spring cylinders
(1) at one side and the two gas storage tanks (2) form a
system. With a changed load, the height is controlled by
adding oil from the hydraulic block (3). The hydraulic block
is activated electro-hydraulically.
The hydraulic power is pro-vided by the LS-capable 3-way
current dividing coil (4) which is integrated in the on-board
hydraulic of the trailer.
The height is determined by the linkage of the height
control (5).

The regulation is carried out by the electronic system, a
Siemens LOGO (6), in the control box. The control system
requires a voltage of 12V and is secured by a fuse (7) 10

from excess voltage (e.g. due to welding work).
13.3 Trailing axle
The trailing axle of the chassis 8-18SL differs significantly
from known trailing axle systems. The crank of a lever
between center of motion (1) and load application point
(2) is long. For the steering motion the sledge (3) must
travel sideward. The motions are smoother but need more
energy, too. This higher expenditure of energy has a posi-
tive impact. As with the „Standard“ steering type axle, the
turning out does not cause any problems. However, this
steering type can transfer more lateral forces.
In order to manoeuvre with the chassis 8-18SL the steering
type axle can be hydraulically centred. The centring force
is sufficient for up to 12 tons axle load (on the steering
type axle) on asphalt.

14. Maintenance and repair work
14.1 Change of tires
If the trailer is lifted for maintenance work,
the tractor shall be coupled! This ensures
a higher stability and the trailer is secured
against rolling!
14.1.1 Change of outer tires
- Slightly loosen the tire bolts
- Lift the trailer, be aware of the load points (L)
- Remove the tire bolts, change / repair the tire
- Install the tire and tighten the tire bolts
- Lower the trailer
- Tighten the tire bolts by tightening moment (12.1.2)

14.1.2. Change of inner front tires
Material: Pallet truck and autolifter (5’000kg)
with at least 320mm lifting height!
Dismounting:
1. Completely lift the trailer with the manual mode of the
height control (14.2.1) until the spring cylinders are fully
extracted
2. Position the autolifter under the trailer and adjust
the height difference in order to have the full lifting
height.
3. Completely lower the spring circuit on the work side
(14.2.1). The spring cylinders shall be com-pletely
stress-free, leave the switch position of the control in
„Manu“ and „Up“!
4. Lift the tire pair 10 cm from the ground.
5. Position the pallet truck under the tire pair. Insert
distance for the inner tire in order to ensure that both
tires are supported. Pendulum stop shall be in the
centre!
6. Slightly lift the pallet truck until the spring cylinder is
stress-free. Dismount the brake connections, hand-
brake, height linkage and bolts of the spring cylin-
ders.
7. Lift the trailer by 10 cm and extract the spring
cylinders
8. Remove the screw of the rotary lock (1) and lower
screws (2), dismount the plate
9. Lift the trailer and remove the tire pair with the pallet
truck
10. Change the inner tire, tighten the tire bolts by tightening
moment (12.1.2).
