Coated Abrasives Guide
Coated abrasives consist of: Abrasive Grain, Bonding Agent and Backing.
Mercer uses the highest quality abrasive grains to
make its belts, discs, rolls and sheets. Grits are available
from 12 (very coarse) to 2000 (ultra-fine).
GRAIN
All of Mercer’s coated abrasives use resin over
resin bond. The double resin system’s strength
allows Mercer products to hold up to the
toughest applications.
BOND
A full range of quality backings for all your
sanding needs.
A-weight paper – Light weight and highly flexible.
C-weight to G-weight paper – Medium weight
to heavy weight. As the letter increases, the paper
becomes stronger and less flexible.
Combination – Paper and cloth. Very strong.
Used on some coarse grit floor sanding products.
Cloth – X-weight cloth for maximum strength
and durability.
Fibre – Heavy vulcanized material. Very tough
for grinding, deburring and finishing.
Film – Polyester 3M film backing is used primarily
when making discs with applications requiring
strength and consistent surface finish.
BACKING
It is important to store coated abrasives at
consistent levels of humidity (30-50%) and at
temperatures between 60 and 80º F. Variations
in temperature and humidity will reduce the
efficiency of all coated abrasives.
Aluminum Oxide – A tough
man-made grain used for
grinding and finishing metals
and wood. Good general
purpose abrasive.
Garnet – A naturally occurring
grain. Used for sanding and
finishing wood.
Silicon Carbide – A sharp
man-made abrasive used on
metals, concrete, natural and
artificial stone, and glass.
Cuts faster under light pressure
than any other abrasive.
Zirconia – A man-made grain
that has self-sharpening
characteristics. It is ideal for heavy
stock removal. Most popular
abrasive in today’s market.
Ceramic – A premium man-made
grain that stays sharp throughout
its life. The longest lasting,
coolest cutting abrasive in the
line. Excellent on tough-to-grind
materials.
Emery – A naturally occurring
round-shaped grain. Tends to
polish rather than abrade. Good
for cleaning and polishing metal.
