SafetyWarnings and Cautions
Caution: This product is designed to work with power systems having a grounded neutral. To reduce the
risk of electric shock, do not plug this product into any other type of power system. Contact a qualified elec-
trician if you are not sure what type of power is supplied to your building.
Power and Electrical Warnings
CAUTION
The power button, indicated by the stand-by power marking, DOES NOT completely turn off the system AC
power. 5V standby power is active whenever the system is plugged in. To remove power from system, you
must unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet. If your system uses more than one AC power cord,
make sure all AC power cords are unplugged before you open the chassis, or add or remove any non hot-
plug components.
The power supply in this product contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the power supply. Haz-
ardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside the power supply. Return to manufacturer for
servicing. To avoid risk of electric shock, turn off the appliance and disconnect the power cord, tele-
communications systems, networks, and modems attached to the appliance before opening it.
The power cord set included with the appliance meets the requirements for use in the country of purchase.
Use the power cord that shipped with the appliance. If this appliance is to be used in another country, pur-
chase an AC power cord set that is approved for use in that country (18 AWG recommended).
The power cord must be rated for the product and for the voltage and current marked on the product's elec-
trical ratings label. The voltage and current rating of the cord should be greater than the voltage and current
rating marked on the product. In addition, the cross-sectional area of the wires must be a minimum of
1.00mmð or 18AWG or 18AWG, and the length of the cords must be between 1.8m (6 feet) and 3.6m (12
feet).
System Access Warnings
CAUTION
To avoid personal injury or property damage, the following safety instructions apply
whenever accessing the inside of the product:
n Turn off all peripheral devices connected to this product.
n Turn off the system by safety shutting down the appliance.
n Disconnect the AC power by unplugging all AC power cords from the system or wall outlet.
n Disconnect all cables and telecommunication lines that are connected to the system.
n Retain all screws or other fasteners when removing access cover(s). Upon completion of accessing
inside the product, refasten access cover with original screws or fasteners.
5
n Do not access the inside of the power supply. There are no serviceable parts in the power supply.
Return to manufacturer for servicing.
n Power down the server and disconnect all power cords before adding or replacing any non hot-plug
component.
n When replacing a hot-plug power supply, unplug the power cord to the power supply being replaced
before removing the power supply from the server.
CAUTION
n If the server has been running, any installed processor(s) and heat sink(s) may be hot. Unless you
are adding or removing a hot-plug component, allow the system to cool before opening the covers. To
avoid the possibility of coming into contact with hot component(s) during a hot-plug installation, be
careful when removing or installing the hot-plug component(s).
CAUTION
n To avoid injury do not contact moving fan blades. If your system is supplied with a guard over the fan,
do not operate the system without the fan guard in place.
Cooling and Airflow Warning
Carefully route cables as directed to minimize airflow blockage and cooling problems.
For proper cooling and airflow, operate the system only with the chassis covers installed. Operating the sys-
tem without the covers in place can damage system parts. To install the covers:
1. Check first to make sure you have not left loose tools or parts inside the system.
2. Check that cables, add-in boards, and other components are properly installed.
3. Attach the covers to the chassis according to the product instructions.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Warning
CAUTION
ESD can damage disk drives, boards, and other parts. We recommend that you perform all procedures at an
ESD workstation. If one is not available, provide some ESD protection by wearing an antistatic wrist strap
attached to chassis ground- any unpainted metal surface -- on your server when handling parts.
Always handle boards carefully. They can be extremely sensitive to ESD. Hold boards only by their edges.
After removing a board from its protective wrapper or from the server, place the board component side up on
a grounded, static free surface. Use a conductive foam pad if available but not the board wrapper. Do not
slide board over any surface

Network Interface Card Options
The following lists the option cards that are available for the S500-based appliances. The low-profile option cards can be
installed into any of the PCIe slots, including the on-board PCIe slots and the PCIe expansion module slots. Full-height
cards, with a system maximum of 2, can only be installed in the PCIe expansion module, slots 3 and 4. Option cards are
shipped with a pre-installed bracket that might not be compatible with your appliance or desired slot usage. You must
replace the bracket with the necessary version before installing an option card.
Be sure to verify that your product supports the option card before installation.
S500 Series-based appliances equipped with a single CPU
cannot
use slots 5, 6, and 7.
Please select the option card that you wish to install:
Review the "SafetyWarnings and Cautions" on page5 before servicing your appliance.
Do not install any NIC (network interface cards) which are not explicitly supported by the appli-
ance. Installation and use of unauthorized NICs might damage the appliance and will invalidate
your warranty!

Install an option card into Slot 1 or 2
The S500 Series expansion slots 1 and 2 supports low-profile cards which can be accessed without the removal of the
PCIe expansion module.
ALWAYS observe proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) conventions. Attach an ESD protective
wrist strap to your wrist and to the chassis. Ensure that the appliance is on an ESD-safe work sur-
face or ground the unit appropriately. Symantec does not assume responsibility or liability for dam-
age resulting from ESD.
1. Unplug the appliance power cords.
2. Open the appliance center cover.
3. Remove the appliance rear cover panel.
4. Unlock the PCIe support latch.
5. Remove the PCIe slot cover by lifting straight up from the appliance.
6. Insert the option card by holding the edges of the card and gently inserting into the slot. It might be necessary to
lightly rock the option card into position. Verify that the PCIe card has been fully seated and is aligned with the
chassis.

7. Lock the securing latch. Verify that it is fully closed and that the option card is secured.
8. Reinstall the appliance’s center and rear panels.
9. Reconnect the network cabling as necessary for your deployment.
10. Reconnect the power cords.
11. Verify that you have correctly installed the option card.

Install an option card into Slot 3 or 4
The S500 Series is equipped with a PCIe expansion module that houses four PCIe cards - two full-height and two low-pro-
file cards. Slots 3 and 4 are the only available slots which can accept a full-length card.
4. Remove the PCIe expansion module and flip over the to access the slots.
5. Unlock the blue PCIe support latches.
6. Remove the expansion slot cover by pressing the release button and then pulling out the cover from the side. Set
the expansion slot cover aside in a safe location for future use
