About This Guide
This guide shows you how to connect your Snap Server 110 or 210 to your network and configure it using the
Guardian OS. The instructions consist of 5 steps:
Step 1: Verify the contents of your shipping package.•
Step 2: Connect power and network cables.•
Step 3: Turn on the Snap Server.•
Step 4: Connect to the Snap Server for the first time.•
Step 5: Start Using your Snap Server.•
Step 1: Verify the Contents of the Shipping Package
Before you begin installation, check the contents of your Ship Kit to make sure you have all the components
described in the
Hardware Features
section.
Step 2: Connect Power and Network Cables
1 Use the provided ethernet cable to connect your Snap
Server to the network.
2 Insert the retention clip into the divets above the power
connector (see illustration).
3 Connect the power supply to the server, inserting the cord
into the retention clip.
4 Connect the power cord to a UPS and/or electrical
outlet.
Note: Snap Servers are designed to work with an APC-
brand, USB- or network-based UPS device to automatically
shut down cleanly in the event of an extended power failure.
You must configure the APC unit in the Administration Tool and in the APC user interface.
Step 3: Turn on the Snap Server
To turn on the server, press the power button on the front of the server.
The server will take a few minutes to initialize. When the Status light
begins to blink steadily (about once per second), your Snap Server is
operational.
Power
Step 4: Connect to the Snap Server for the First Time
Your Snap Server is preset to get an IP Address automatically. If your network does not assign IP Addresses
automatically, use the Connect Using Snap Server Manager procedure below to assign one manually.
1 Find the server name. The default server
name is SNAPnnnnnn, where nnnnnn is the
server number. The server number is a unique,
numerics-only string that appears on a label on
the underside of the server chassis.
2 In a Web browser, enter the following URL:
http://SNAPnnnnnn (where SNAPnnnnnn is
the server name)
3 Press Enter. The Web View screen opens.
Note If the Web View screen does not open,
use the Connect Using SSM procedure below.
4 Log into the Administration Tool. Click the
Administration link. In the login dialog box,
enter admin as the user name and admin as
the password, then click OK.
5 Complete the setup procedure using the Initial
Setup Wizard.
Connect Using Snap Server Manager (SSM)
Use this procedure if your network does not assign IP addresses automatically or cannot resolve the server name
to an IP address.
1 Install SSM. Double-click the Install_SnapServerTools.html file on your Snap Server User CD. Be sure to install
SSM on a computer residing on the same network segment as your Snap Server.
2 Launch SSM. SSM will discover all Snap Servers on the local
network segments, and will display IP addresses for servers
with IP assignments and 10.10.10.10 for servers with no IP.
3 If you need to assign an IP address, right-click the server name
and select Set IP Address. Enter an IP address and a subnet
mask, then click OK.
4 Launch the Administration Tool. Right-click the server name and
select Launch Web Administration, as shown in the illustration.
5 Click the Administration link. In the login dialog box, enter
admin as the user name and admin as the password, then
click OK.
6 Complete the setup procedure using the Initial Setup Wizard.
Step 5: Use your Snap Server
Once installed on your network, the Snap Server appears as a server with shared folders. You can use it to
organize and store files in the same way you use the folders on your local hard disk. By default, there are no
security restrictions when accessing the server, but you can configure your access and security settings through the
GuardianOS. See the User’s Guide for the Snap Server 110 and 210 for more information.
