1. Introduction
Congratulations on purchasing Edimax’s high-performance 9-
Port Desktop Ethernet Hub. Featuring ease of installation, this hub
helps hook your PCs together at a minute, communicating instantly
over the net to share resources of your PCs and Printers.
With eight UTP ports and one BNC port located at the rear
panel, this device allows you to network up to at least nine
workstations in a standalone configuration. An uplink function is
designed for connection to another hub to extend your segment,
rather than a normal port for a workstation. For more details about
Uplink function, refer to the following section.
Running at 10Mbps with great stability, ER-5390P complies
with IEEE802.3 standard. Additionally, it is noted that all end-node
devices must be within 100 meters of the connected hub.

5. Installation
(1) Operating Environment
ER-5390P must be installed and operated within the limits of
specified operating temperature and humidity (see previous section
under Specifications). Do not place objects on top of the unit. Do
not obstruct any vents at the sides of the unit. Do not position the
hub near any heating source such as heater, radiator, or direct
exposure to sun. Prevent entering of water and moisture into the unit.
If necessary, use dehumidifier to reduce humidity.
(2) Connecting network devices
Connect one end of the network cable to any of the RJ-45 or
BNC connectors on the rear panel, and connect the other end of the
network cable to the network device with RJ-45 or BNC connector
and the maximum length between the hub and any network devices
UTP is 100 meters (300ft) and BNC is 200 meters (650ft). Once the
network cable is connected on both ends and the attached network
devices are powered on, the Link Status LED should be lit.
(3) Uplink to Another Hub
The Uplink function is designed to extend your segment by
connecting to another hub. Note that the Ethernet Hub’s port 1 can
be switched to an uplink function by switching the sliding switch.
There are two ways for you to connect to another hub:
1) Switch the sliding switch to the uplink mode to convert port 1 to
an uplink and use a straight-through twisted-pair cable to
connect port 1 to another hub.
2) If you use a crossover cable to connect the two Hubs, then you
can use any port on the Ethernet Hub to connect to any normal
port on the other Hub. Please note: the uplink port must be in
normal mode for the method to work.
(4) Connecting the power
Connect the output end of the power adapter to the power
connector on the rear panel of the hub. Connect the power adapter to
the power outlet. The green Power LED on the front panel of the
hub should be lit.
6. Trouble-shooting
1. Power LED is not lit
Check if the power adapter is properly connected to the power outlet.
Make sure the DC power jack is firmly plugged into the power socket of the
hub.
2. Link Status LED is not lit
Check the power switch of the network devices attached to the hub;
make sure they are turned ON. Check the network cables; make
sure they are properly connected to the hub and the network devices.
Check the network cables; make sure the cables comply with
EIA/TIA 568 specification. Use straight-through Category 3, 4 or 5 cables
for connection.
3. The first port’s Link Status LED is not lit when it is uplinked to
another hub
Make sure the cable is connected to the uplink port.
Check the network cable; make sure it is properly connected to
both hubs. One end of the cable should be connected to the uplink port
while the other end of the cable should connect to a regular port. Do not
connect the cable to both uplink ports.
Check the network cable; make sure the cable complies with
EIA/TIA 568 specification.
4. Collision LED flashes constantly
Remove all the network cables; connect the cables back one by one
to isolate the source of the collision.
Check the network cable, inferior cable quality will result in
excessive collision and error packets.
