ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit Quick Installation Guide Product Overview
Quick Installation Guide
Thank you for purchasing the ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit. Before you install
and connect the ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit, please take a few minutes to read
this quick installation guide. This guide explains how to connect the ServeRAID M5100
Series Battery Kit remotely to your ServeRAID M5100 Series Controller. If you need more
information about any topic covered in this guide, refer to the related documents on
your ServeRAID-M Documentation CD.
Product Overview The ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit provides an inexpensive alternative to using an
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a second level of fault tolerance when used
with a UPS.
The ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit product is an intelligent battery backup unit
(iBBU) based on Lithium ion (LiON) battery cell technology. The unit protects the
integrity of the cached data on a ServeRAID M5100 Series Controller for up to 48 hours
(depending on the derated retention time selected) in case of a complete AC power
failure or a brief power outage.
Connect the remote ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit unit by cable to the ServeRAID
M5100 Series 512MB Cache/RAID 5 Upgrade, which is a transportable memory module
installed on the following ServeRAID controllers:
ServeRAID M5110 SAS/SATA Controller
ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA Controller
For the procedures, see Connecting a Remote ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit Unit on
the System Chassis to a ServeRAID-M5100 Series 512MB Cache/RAID 5 Upgrade on a
ServeRAID Controller.
CAUTION: The battery used in this device might present a fire or chemical burn hazard
if mistreated. Do not disassemble, heat above 100 °C (212 °F) or incinerate. Dispose of
used battery properly. Keep away from children.

Cache/RAID 5 Upgrade on a
ServeRAID Controller
The procedures in this section show how to connect a remote ServeRAID M5100 Series
Battery Kit on the system chassis to ServeRAID M5120 SAS/SATA Controller. You can
connect the ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit in the same way to the ServeRAID
M5110 SAS/SATA Controller.
To connect a remote ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit unit to your ServeRAID
controller, perform the following tasks in order:
1. See Removing the ServeRAID Controller from the Computer on page 11
2. See Connecting the Cable Between the ServeRAID M5100 Series 512MB Cache/RAID 5
on the ServeRAID Controller and the Remote ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Unit on
page 11
3. See Reinstalling the ServeRAID Controller in the Computer on page 12
NOTE: Because server chassis vary from vendor to vendor, no standard mounting
option exists that is compatible with the various system configurations. The
ServeRAID M5100 Series Battery Kit, in combination with the Remote Battery Kit,
includes the battery, daughtercard, cable, and screws. This combination enables
authorized resellers and chassis manufacturers to customize the location of the
remote battery to provide the most flexibility within various environments.
