Preparation
Beforeassembly,somepreparationneedstodone.Partsmustbepurchased,a
workareaneedssetupandchassisdecisionsshouldbemade.Theaxiomhaste
makeswastehasneverbeenmoretrue.Makesureyourchosentransformersand
theboardwillfitcomfortablyusingthechassisofyourchoice.ThePCBitself
makesaperfecttemplate,asshownonthewebsite,forsocketandmounting
holes.BesuretoplanwhereRCAconnectors,bindingposts,standby&ON/OFF
switchesandtheACcordwillbeorientedonthechassis.Physicallylayoutthe
partsinaspaceequaltoyourchassistoassureeverythingfits.Also,notethatthe
vacuumtubesocketscanonlybemountedononeside,whichisdesignatedin
thesilkscreen.
Overview of the Schematic and Design
ThedesigncloselyresemblestheDynacoStereo35.Theuseofone12DW7per
channelhasbeenreplacedby½a12AX7Aand½a12AU7.The12AX7Aisa
voltageamplifierthatdirectlydrivesthe12AU7,acathodynephasesplitter.The
onlyothermeaningfulchangeisthereplacementofasinglecathoderesistorand
capacitorwithfourindividualresistorsandcapacitors.Alargervalueresistorin
serieswithavariableresistorparallelsthemaincathoderesistor,providinga
rangeof320450ohmspercathode.Thiscircuitistheninserieswitha10ohm
resistortocalculatethecurrentveryeasilyviaatestpoint‐setconservativelyfor
350mV,thus35mA.
Using the Assembly Drawing
Theassemblydrawingisaquickreferencetowhatcomponentiswhereandthe
numberingschemefortheconnectors.Itisalsoagoodplacetomakeanynotes.
Soldering
ThisPCBisadoublesided,platedthroughholedesignon
.094”FR4material
withLPI(liquidphotoimagable)soldermaskand2ouncecopperperside.
Whensolderingthesecomponents,letthesolderflowthroughtheholetoforma
‘teepee’onbothsidesoftheboardforanoptimumconnection.Groundplane
connectionssinkalotofheatfromthe
solderingiron,sotakecaretodothese
well‐youmayhavetotouchupfromtheoppositeside.
TIP:PCBStuffing
Usetheflatendofthe10poleterminalblockasaleadbendingtool.This
worksformostoftheparts.Dotakecaretonotdamagethemeniscusofthe
components.Insertallresistorsbeforesoldering,bendingtheleadsdowntohold
theminplace.Thisallowsonetofixanyplac ingerrors thatmightoccurvery
easily.Useagoodpairofsnipstoremovetheexcessleads.Thetopsideofthe
PCBisdesignatedasthesidewiththegroundplaneandwiththesockets
markedas‘THISSIDEONLY’.
1. StuffallfixedvalueresistorsintothePCB.MountR36andR34onthe
oppositesideofthePCB(i.e.oppositeofR37andR35).Thisisto
maximizeheatdissipation.
2. Stuffvariableresistors.Youmaychoosetoputthemonthetopsideofthe
PCBanddrillextraholesinyourchassisforexternaladjustments.There
areguidesholeinthePCBforthis.Also,besureyouwillcaneasilyinsert
aDMMprobebetweentheresistors.
3. Kinkleadsonthesilvermicacapacitorsandstuff.
4. StuffD1andD2.Mindtheorientationofthecathode,whichisrepresented
byastripeonboththesilkscreenandthediode’sbody.
5. StuffC5,C6,C7&C8.Mindthepolarity.Theboardhas“+”symbolsto
showwherethepositiveterminalfromthecapacitorshouldbeplaced.
Notethatmanymoderncapshaveonlytheterminalmarked,usually
withastriperunningdownoneside.Ifyouchoosetosubstitute,the
diametermustbenomorethan10mm.Useasmallervalue,forexample
100uF,ifnecessary.
6. Stuffallthepolypropcapacitors.
7. Placeandsolderallthetubesocketsmakesurethey
aremountedonthe
topsideonly.Itisrecommendedtouseanoldminiatureninepintubeto
breakinthesockets.Ihavefoundaverysmallnailworkswellforme
butdon’tbreaktheceramic!
8. Placeandsoldertheterminalblocks.Donotover
soldertheconnectorsas
soldercouldthenspillundertheconnectorcausingashort.
9. StuffR42,theIRCL,makingsureitdoesn’tleanonortouchtheJ1
terminalblockasitgetswarm.
10. Stuffthe4filtercapacitors.Mindthepolarity.Ifthesearesubstituted,the
diametermustbe25mmorless.Theheightmustbe30mmorlesstofitin
a2”highchassis.
11. Carefullygooveryourwork,lookingfor:
a. anycoldsolderjoints(thesewilllookdull)
b. soldersplashesandshortsbetweensocketpins
c. anyconnectionsthatsolderdidn’tflowtotheotherside(like
groundplaneconnections)
d. snipexcessleads
e. compareyourboardtophotosfrom thewebsiteagoodcheckfor
capacitororientation
Initial Impedances: When it Doubt, Ohm it Out
Thesearewithoutconnectionstotheterminalblocks.Whenconnected,those
readingsthatwilldifferwillbeinbrackets.Differenttransformerswillhave
differentreadingsthisoneisaPA774.
