1 Description
1.1 Application
The TMC--Converter (TMC = T
ransmitting Magnetic Compass) for transmitting the
course information to the repeater compasses or other nautical signal loads.
The TMC--Converter is suitable for:
-- ships under 500 gross tons, which need no gyro compass but want an electrical
heading input for the autopilot and want a heading input for the compass
repeaters.
-- ships, which need, additional to a gyro compass, an independent magnetic
compass system to transmit compass information to a heading repeater
(for example ships under Dutch flag).
The TMC--Converter, type 121--061 reads the heading data from a connected magnetic
sonde and disposes it, at in total 5 outputs, to connected heading receivers:
-- 2 outputs (adjustable) as NMEA 0183 or Course bus
NMEA --dataformat adjustable for 2 different transmission rates.
-- 3 outputs as Step--Signal with 6/Step, 35VDC

3 Installation of the TMC--Converter
3.1 Mounting of the TMC--Converter
The TMC--Converter should be mounted at a location where shocks and vibrations are
minimal.
The mounting should be performed in that manner, that there are no influences of
seastate.
The TMC--Converter should be installed under consideration of
Dimensional Drawing 138--118.HP005.
The frontcover should be removable after installation.
Referring to the internal protection at the dimensional drawing should be observed.

3.2 Establishing of cable connections
3.2.1 General remarks
Caution
When establishing cable connections ensure that the
cables are disconnected from the power supply.
It is essential to ensure that all cables are disconnected
from the power supply, if necessary measure the voltage
beforehand and/or disconnect the relevant distributor.
In order to ensure that the converter operates correctly, it is essential that you follow the
procedures described below for establishing cable connections.
-- Strip approx. 180 mm of the cable.
(Depending from the distance of the cable inlet to the connection terminal)
Make sure you do not damage the shielding layer.
-- Strip off the shielding to a remainder of approximately 15mm .
approx. 180mm
approx.
15mm
Fig. 2: How to strip the connection cable
-- Screw the cable gland out from respective housing and push the screw connection
components over the cable.
It is absolutely essential that the sequence (as shown in Fig. 3) is adhered to.
-- check the cone and counterpart on the earthing insert for corrosion and if necessary
remove corrosion using an appropriate process (emery board).
-- Push the counterpart of the earthing insert as far as the end of the cable shield.

-- Insert the earthing insert, the seal with and the washer into the cable gland, place the
counter nut on top and and hand--tighten.
-- Strip the cable cores to a length of approx. 15 mm, twist slightly and clamp on the
cable end sleeves. Connect the cable strands in the respective housing as shown in
the respective table. Hand--tighten the terminal screws concerned.
-- Check the connection is firm by pulling lightly.

3.2.2 General information about establishing an earth connection
In order to comply with stringent EMC requirement, please abide by the information
given below regarding cable connections.
Use the cable types specified.
It is essential to ensure that these connections have a
common reference to ship‘s eart!
Any additional components (options) must also be con-
nected to the common earth!
Fig. 4: Example for establishing an earth connection
All earth connections must be made as shown in Fig. 4 .
The earthing cable must possess a cross--section of minimum 1,5mm
2
.
The cable bracket should be mounted between two toothed discs.
Earth connections must be free of corrosion and well fastened.

3.3 Adjustments of the data formats
(see also assembly drawing with configuration 121--061.HP101)
Both serial outputs are adjustable for data format, type of telegram and telegram repeti-
tion rate. Adjustable are (for each output separately):
-- NMEA or Course bus
-- NMEA HCHDG or NMEA HCHDT
-- NMEA repetition rate 0,1 second or 1 second
Adjustments are performed by Jumper B32 (Fig. 7).

4 Maintenance and Repair
4.1 Maintenance
The TMC--Converter is maintenance free.
4.1.1 Alignment (sensitivity of magnetic sonde)
Basic status:
-- TMC--Converter is installed.
-- Magnetic compass is installed together with the magnetic sonde.
-- Magnetic compass is connected to the TMC--Converter.
-- Heading repeater is connected.
-- Data format is adjusted (NMEA or Course bus)
After applying the supply voltage(s) the heading repeater synchronizes at its 0--position
and turns after that to the true heading value.
If the heading display from the heading receiver is differing from the heading from the
magnetic compass, the screws of the magnetic sonde must be loosened and the ma-
gnetic sonde has to be turned within its mounting until both heading values correspond.
Alignment:
(see Fig. 8)
At headings of “North”, “East”, “South” and “West” voltages have to be measured at the
test--points TP11 and TO 12 and have to be aligned with a potentiometer to a value ac-
cording to below mentioned table.
Heading of ma-
gnetic compass
Test--point Potentiometer voltage to be
aligned
03 TP12 R155 4,3VDC 0,1VDC
1803 TP12 R155 0,7VDC 0,1VDC
903 TP11 R155 4,3VDC 0,1VDC
2703 TP11 R155 0,7VDC 0,1VDC
The potentiometer R113 is pre--aligned by the company, but if there is a higher deviation
at the 45 intermediate--values, than the heading value of the connected heading re-
ceiver has to be adapted with potentiometer R113.

4.1.2 Repair
Except of a replacement of fuses for connected heading receivers no further repair
works are possible.
In case of a defect the TMC--Converter has to be replaced complete.
The TMC--Converter has to be switched OFF from any supply
voltage to replace a fuse.
Only original spare parts are allowed to be used.
