Conventional DC motor
Friction is generated between the carbon brush
and the commutator. Such an electric loss
affects the efficiency of the tool.
Brushless motor
The rotator can be rotated without the use of
carbon brushes and commutators because
the current that is applied to the stator coil is
sequentially switched in the inverter circuit.
Thus no friction and electric loss are
generated. The Model WH 14DBL can
operate at a low current and its working
performance is 1.3 times higher than the
Model WH 14DSL.

Conventional switch
The operational load of
the switch trigger is high
in order to activate the
mechanical contact
where high current is
applied. Thus the
contact is apt to be
deteriorated and it
affects the service life.
Electronic switch
The triggering force of the
electronic switch is about
50% less than that of the
conventional model and
the switch movement is
smooth thanks to the
signal contact. Moreover,
it has longer service life
because high current is
not applied to the inside
of the switch and
deterioration of the
contact is minimized.
5-1. Selling Point Descriptions
(1) Brushless motor
The newly developed brushless motor does not require conventional carbon brushes and
commutators. Therefore, the Model WH 14DBL can operate at a low current without friction
and electric loss. Its working performance per charge is 1.3 times higher than the Model
WH 14DSL.
(2) Electronic switch
The triggering force of the electronic switch is about 50% less than that of the conventional
model. Thus the switch moves smoothly and it is easy to adjust finely. Moreover, it has longer
service life because high current is not applied to the switch.
The contact is apt to be deteriorated
because high current is always
applied to the inside of the switch.
Longer service life because
high current is not applied to
the inside of the switch.

(3) Tightening mode selector function
The Model WH 14DBL can be used for wide range of applications such as heavy load works
requiring high tightening torque and delicate works thanks to the single/continuous selector
switch and the 4-step high/low selector switch.
• Single mode
When the trigger switch is pulled to start operation, bolt tightening stops automatically after 1
to 4 tightenings.
• Continuous mode
When the trigger switch is pulled to start operation, bolt tightening continues (without
stopping automatically).
• High/low selector switch
The rotation speed changes in 4 steps (500, 1,200, 2,000 and 2,600 min
-1
) each time the
high/low selector switch is pressed.
NOTE:
• When the forward/reverse button is set to reverse, the high/low mode and the
single/continuous mode are set to "High" and "Continuous" respectively, regardless of
the indicators on the switch panel.
• The high/low and single/continuous selector switches can only be set after the battery
has been installed in the driver and the trigger switch has been pulled once.

7-2. Tightening Torque
7-2-1. Comparison of tightening torque in each mode
The data below shows the tightening torque obtained in each mode of the Model WH 14DBL.
Please note that the data are intended for reference purposes only because the actual tightening
torque may vary depending on hardness of workpieces, diameter of thread, ambient temperature,
characteristics of the battery, etc.
• Tightening torque in continuous mode
The following graph shows the torque required for tightening an M14 high-strength bolt in 3
seconds with a socket adapter and a hexagon socket (overall length 40 mm).
Fig. 3 Tightening torque in continuous mode
• Tightening torque in single mode
The single mode is applicable to delicate works such as tightening small diameter screws and
light load works such as affixing plasterboards. Please note that the actual tightening torque
may vary depending on hardness of workpieces, diameter of thread, ambient temperature,
characteristics of the battery, etc. If the appropriate tightening torque is exceeded especially
when tightening small diameter machine screws, the screws may be damaged. The customers
should be advised to adjust the rotational speed according to the application with the high/low
selector switch and check that the tightening torque is appropriate before operation.

7-2-2. Screw diameter and appropriate tightening torque
Generally speaking, the appropriate tightening torque for a screw can be determined by the
strength grade of the screw and the material tightened. Tables 1 and 2, and Fig. 4 below list data
relative to the strength grade of various screws and the appropriate tightening torque. For further
reference, appropriate tightening torque is calculated with the following formula. Study and use
this formula for accurate selection of tightening torque.

The graph below shows the relationship between tightening time and tightening torque according to
types of bolts. The data below are intended for reference purposes only because actual tightening
torque may vary depending on tightening conditions.
NOTE:
The term "tightening time" means the impact time after the lower surface of the bolt comes
in contact with the washer.
• Each bolt is directly tightened into a steel plate under the following tightening conditions.
Accordingly, the torque goes up very abruptly in comparison with the actual bolt tightening
conditions.

8. PRECAUTIONS IN SALES PROMOTION
8-1. Safety Instructions
In the interest of promoting the safest and most efficient use of the Model WH 14DBL cordless
impact driver by all of our customers, it is very important that at the time of sale the salesperson
carefully ensures that the buyer seriously recognizes the importance of the contents of the
Handling Instructions, and fully understands the meaning of the precautions listed on the Caution
Plate and Name Plate attached to each tool.
A. Handling Instructions
Salespersons must be thoroughly familiar with the contents of the Handling Instructions in order
to give pertinent advice to the customer. In particular, they must have a thorough understanding
of the precautions in the use of the cordless (battery charger type) electric power tools which are
different from those of ordinary electric power tools.
(1) Before use, ensure that the battery is fully charged.
New battery is not fully charged. Even if the battery was fully charged at the factory, long
periods without use, such as during shipping, cause the storage battery to lose its charge.
Customers must be instructed to fully charge the battery prior to use.
(2) When charging storage battery, use only the exclusive Model UC 18YRSL charger provided
with the tool.
Because of the designed rapid-charging feature, use of other battery chargers is hazardous.
(3) Follow prescribed steps in using the charger.
First connect the storage battery to the charger, then plug the charger into an AC outlet
(ensuring that the voltage matches that indicated on the unit). If this order is reversed, the
charger may not function properly.
(4) Ensure the power source voltage is the same as that indicated on the Name Plate of the
charger. Use of any other power source (DC outlet, fuel powered generator, etc.) will cause
the charger to overheat and burn out.
(5) Do not use any voltage increasing equipment (transformer etc.) between the power source
and the charger.
If the charger is used with voltage over and above that indicated on the unit, it will not function
properly.
(6) Conduct battery charging at an ambient temperature range of 0 °C to 40 °C (32 °F to 104 °F).
Special temperature sensitive devices are employed in the charger to permit rapid charging.
Ensure that customers are instructed to use the charger at the indicated ambient temperature
range. At temperature under 0 °C (32 °F), the thermostat will not function properly, and the
storage battery may be over-charged. At temperatures over 40 °C (104 °F), the storage
battery cannot be sufficiently charged. The optimum temperature range is 20 °C to 25 °C
(68 °F to 77 °F).
(7) The battery charger should not be used continuously.
At high ambient temperature, if over three storage batteries are charged in succession, the
temperature of the coils on the transformer will rise and there is a chance that the temperature
fuse inserted in the interior of the transformer will inadvertently melt. After charging one
-16-
battery, please charge the next battery after about a fifteen-minute interval.
(8) The charger case is equipped with air vents to protect the internal electronic components from
overheating. Caution the customers not to allow foreign materials such as metallic or
flammable objects to be dropped or inserted into the air vents. This could cause electric shock,
fire or other serious hazards.
(9) Do not attempt to disassemble the storage battery or the charger.
Special devices, such as a thermostat, are built into the storage battery and charger to permit
rapid charging. Incorrect parts replacement and/or wiring will cause malfunctions which could
result in fire or other hazards. Instruct the customers to bring the Model WH 14DBL to an
authorized service center in the event repair or replacement is necessary.
(10) Disposal of the storage battery
Ensure that all customers understand that the storage battery should be returned to the
Hitachi power tool sales outlet or authorized service center when it is no longer capable of
being recharged or repaired. If thrown into a fire, the battery may explode, or if discarded
indiscriminately, leakage of the cadmium compound contained in the battery may cause
environmental pollution.
(11) Effect of the permanent magnet
The Model WH 14DBL has a strong permanent magnet in its motor. Please instruct the
customers about adhesion of dust to the Model WH 14DBL and effect on electronic devices as
follows.
• Do not place the Model WH 14DBL on a workbench or workplace where metal dust is
scattered about.
• Do not touch the dust-adhered Model WH 14DBL. Instruct the customers to remove adhered
dust with a brush.
• Users of medical electronics such as a pacemaker must not use or get close to the Model
WH 14DBL.
• Do not bring precision equipment such as a mobile-phone or electronic recording media such
as a magnetic card close to the Model WH 14DBL.
(12) Keep the battery out of dust.
• Protect the battery from being covered with dust during operation.
• Protect the battery from being covered with dust accumulated on the Model WH 14DBL
during operation.
• Do not leave the battery in a dusty area when not in use.
• Remove dust from the battery and store it separating from metallic parts such as screws and
nails.
